Tommy Adeane
is in his last year at Magdalene College, Cambridge reading History of Art.
Kieran Angelini-Hurll
and his wife, Becky, are on their way home from Singapore with a new born
little girl (the first female A-H ever, claims proud grandfather, Patrick
A-H!).
Rogan A-H
and his family (three boys!) now live in Pimlico. Leo lives in
Fulham and is doing something complicated in the City to do with finance.
Adrian Arnold
is always keen to keep in touch and to find out what others did “with that
fine education”. He wrote: “after the Indian Army (& Pakistan Army for
Partition), I went to prison for 32 years - Pentonville, Nicosia, Kaduna &
several more - as Governor! H/M Williamson wanted me as Deputy Head, when I
was at Goudhurst Detention Centre. I don’t think it was because Ashdown’s
inmates had deteriorated! I have just closed down a ‘Doollally’ reunion (Deolali
OCTU, nr Bombay), since it was becoming a list of obituaries, and just now
President of the Old Ardinians Society (Ardingly College). Be good to find
out what other O.A.s have done - well done, Darren Lui!”
Harriet Asquith is
having a great time at Wycombe and is doing a lot of sport which she says is
really good fun, but she has a lot of prep to do all the time including
things like English coursework and revision for Latin and Greek GCSE's. (4
February 2008)
In the
words of his Housemaster, Ed Atkin’s housemaster “cannot think of a
sports scholar who has given so much to the Marlborough cause”; he was an
influential member of the 1st XV
and the 1st hockey
XI and was captain of the rackets and tennis teams. He is off to Leeds to
read History of Art.
Oliver Atkin
has just left Marlborough (a year after brother Ed) with As in Latin, Greek
and French and is off to Bristol to read Classics after a gap year skiing in
Quebec and then travelling in Mexico. He remains a passionate footballer
(and supporter) and captained the school 1st XI
as well as playing for the 1st VI
in tennis.

and art too and hopes to visit Ashdown soon again!

Canterbury. Chris Barker got all As and Bs in his GCSEs.

Myles
Beaufort
(1978-1981)
writes:
Just an update of what I'm
now doing: Executive Development Chef for Mitchell's Quality Foods (www.liteneasy.com.au)
a manufacturer of nutitionally balanced frozen meals for the Australian
dieting market. Celebrating 10 years of marriage to Virginia next year
(2009) and we now have two sons, Maximilian (19/10/00) and Jett (06/05/05).
Still loving life in Australia - particularly when we are on our boat on the
Gold Coast. Often think back to happy days at Ashdown especially having
recently found a few old Ashdownian friends on Facebook! (myles@mitchellsqf.com.au)
(7 October 2008)
George
Belcher is

gap year working for Mark Warner in Courcheval.
Alex Blessley - 'I am on my gap year having left the King's School
Canterbury and am currently working for a conservative party spin doctor in
Westminster helping to run a campaign for Mayor of London. I also spent a
spell working for Rt. Hon John Redwood MP as a research assistant. I
recently won a place to study PPE at Brasenose College Oxford from 2007 and
am thoroughly enjoying myself. Hope alls well there and that the welly
hasn't fallen down...

polo for the university. He enjoyed an internship at JP Morgan during the
summer vacation. He sees Jim Sellars and Will Fremlin-Key, both of whom
are with him in Durham.
Derek von Bethmann-Hollweg
- 'I worked for Shell International for 34 years around the world, and after
retiring became a small-time second-career but Equity-carded actor - played
Chesney Allen in a touring tribute show called "The Falnagan and Allen
Story" for six years, but have just'retired' from that too! '
James Bide-Thomas (jbidethomas@kingstreetchambers.com)
'Perhaps the experience of fluffing my lines as 3rd junior counsel for the
defence in the mock trial rubbed off on me, as I am now a practising
barrister on the Midland Circuit, undertaking general common law work. After
leaving Ashdown, I went off to Charterhouse and then to Leicester University
to study archaeology and ancient history. I spent some lovely summers
digging up Bronze Age cities and travelling around Greece before studying
law and then reading for the Bar in London. I popped back to Ashdown
recently for a turn around the grounds and found it happily not much
changed, as I have many fond and no doubt inaccurate memories! My
sister, Alexandra (Ali) Thomas, (1989-1995) works at the Natural
History Museum, where she is currently in charge of volunteer, having
studied ancient history and archaeology at Newcastle after leaving Benenden.
Chris
Binney is director of and chef at a company called Jersey Sushi (in
Jersey), but is doing a few weeks cooking in a luxury chalet and getting
some snow boarding in while his business partner looks after the sushi. (20
May 2008)
Francis
Binney is doing environmental work for The Royal Bank of Canada. He
has spent the last two years out in Sri Lanka working as a fisheries
programme advisor for a local charit, helping local fishing communities
after the tsunami and restoring mangrove forests that had been destroyed by
the war and overuse. (20 May 2008)

Jamie
Briggs is
working in London for an Investment Management Company. He is going to be
Fred Bjorn’s best man at his wedding next September (2007).
Esme
Brand is
doing well at Roedean and predictably was seen on stage early in her career
there! They report that she has developed from a reluctant to a very keen
swimmer so much so that she recently swam half a mile in a ‘swim the
Channel’ event.
Gemma
(née) Broughton is living in New York and has gone back to studying –
a three year Nutrition course at Hunter College. Michael Broughton
is doing a lot of flying in his job and is also busy trying to sell olive
oil and pizza to the Chinese.

Durham or Edinburgh to read Ancient History. (20 May 2008)
Laura Christopherson
has been extremely busy in her two years at Uppingham. She
has been tennis captain for the last two years, in the first teams for
hockey, tennis and netball, and plays county hockey for Leicestershire. She
has also been in the girls’ golf team, and in the CCF. Her nickname is
‘HOBBIT!’ for various reasons!
Tom Clowes
writes: “Back in 1986, I was in trouble with Clive Williams (Headmaster)
for climbing the Wellingtonia. I was 13 years old. Eighteen years later, I
somehow managed to secure enough sponsorship to attempt Everest on its
northern side from Tibet. Our team was forced to retreat at 8000m in storm
conditions where eight climbers lost their lives. Having sworn never to
return again, two years on I found myself planning another Everest
expedition, but this time going from the southern side in Nepal up the SE
ridge - the same route that Hillary and Tenzing climbed in 1953. Sponsorship
was again found after much work and I asked my brother Ben to join me. At
7.45 am on 18th May 2006 we were both standing on the roof of the world. It
was unusually cold, about
minus 60 degrees, and we both suffered from
frostbitten fingertips and toes. It was an experience that I shall never
forget. For more information please visit my website at
www.tomclowes.com”. Tom Clowes is the proud father of Sebastian,
born in January 2008.

swimming, Prue Leith cookery and driving lessons! Now it’s heads down for
AS levels – English, Politics, Geography and Drama.
Ross Culbertson
has achieved an A grade in his Maths GCSE already and is thoroughly enjoying
Radley. He sails a lot and carries on with his Mandarin.

writes “Wow, I’m getting old! I am actually in my last year of university. I
graduated from Eton in 2002 and decided to study in the United States. I am
enrolled at Emory University in Atlanta, GA. I am studying Economics with an
Italian minor. I plan to work in New York City or in London.”
Nick Davies
has received his Geography degree from Bristol and is now living in Putney
and working for Trailfinders in High Street Ken.
William Davison
was Head of his House at Marlborough. He enjoyed a trip to India
immediately after A levels and is going up to Selwyn College, Cambridge to
read Natural Sciences.
Ed
Davison
suffered an appalling fracture in a rugby accident and this, combined with
illness, made for a tricky year. However, he is now quite recovered and
proved it by being made captain of the Colts 1st XI
cricket team and achieving straight A*s at GCSE. He will be taking Maths,
English, Latin and History at A level (and has bagged an A in French AS).
Ben
Dodson is
currently in his final year at Eton and is Captain of House Games. He
spends a considerable amount of time as lead guitarist for his band ‘Hello
Bruno’.

Piers Egerton-Warburton
has received 17 Show-Ups at Eton, a house record for a first term.
David Egginton was a pupil at Ashdown House from 1943 -1946 and
remembers the excitement in the school of the "doodle-bug"
days, but a lot of water has passed under the bridge since
then. From Ashdown, he went on to Oundle, the RAF and St
Caths.Cambridge. He has enjoyed his working live and
retired in1997 since when his wife and him are living in Douglas
Lanarkshire Scotland. They have 5 children, 11
grandchildren and 1 great grandchild at the latest count, none
of whom live close enough to see them very often. When he
was at the School, the Wallis family provided most of the staff.
(6 May 2008)

Simon Gibbs
has had a great gap year with Raleigh International in Costa Rica and
Nicaragua. He is now reading English Lit at Newcastle. As well as his
football, he wants to do the Great North Run next summer.
Hannah Gibbs
graduated well from Leeds and will soon be working in her chosen field –
charity and aid development. Alexis Gibbs continues to enjoy
Oxford and is about to embark on his Portuguese year out. Maia Gibbs
had wonderful journeys through India, Thailand, Laos and Vietnam and is
now at Nottingham University (on the back of three A grades at A
level). Patrick G keeps the family presence going at King’s
Canterbury.
Sarah
Gibson (2002-2005) is currently in the 1st XI for hockey, and has
started her own cheerleading squad which already has 9 members. She took
French, Spanish and Maths GCSE early last year and gained A*s in all of
them. She has managed to gain a large part in the school musical
'West Side Story'. (10 October 2007)
Robin Goddard (1937-1940) "Mr and Mrs Wallace were running the
school when I came in 1937, with Major Formby as Deputy Head. There was
also another very interesting master whose name I cannot recall, but who
was a very keen lepidopterist, setting traps for moths etc, a job that
we all participated in. Tim Wallace was a contemporary of mine and
he came once or twice to my home in Exeter. He would be my age now, i.e.
78, if alive. I would like to hear from him if possible. I learned
to play golf with a set of Hamleys clubs, swim and ride apart from being
educated at Ashdown. I was evacuated in 1940 when a couple of
German landmines landed rather too near the school and continued prep
school at Exeter, before going on to Haileybury and Sandhurst. I retired
from my own machinery export business in 1997/98 and now live
permanently in France.
I have many happy memories of Ashdown.

James Gozney
writes: "I thought I'd send you a little
update on what my brother and I have been up to over the past few years
since we left the world of prayers, rest and early morning Greek with Mr
Williams.
I left Ashdown for Eton in 2000, where I eventually won my scholarship
and in 2005 went to read Economics at Bristol. Mrs Millar's red pen
obviously had a major influence, since I stuck at maths and further
maths until A-level... much appreciated! I've come out with a First from
Uni somehow, which should hopefully give me a little leg up on the
investment banking world next year.
Alex left in 2003 for Eton as well, and achieved a clean sheet of
results in all exams. He was also a stalwart player in the tennis VI.
He's off to Oxford in October this year to read Arabic and Middle
Eastern studies.
Preliminary plans are in motion to do Vuelta Sudamericana, the world's
longest organised bike race next July (also the first year it has been
done) - 13,000km worth of mountains and the like across South America
for charity, spanning 5 months. I'll be writing my will beforehand. I'm
about to go off for a ski season
in
Whistler though, so organising it all from there might prove too big a
mountain to climb. We'll see..." (james.gozney@gmail.com)
(8 September 2008)
Fred Greenish
is really enjoying Stowe. He is in the B team for hockey and captain of
the A for cricket.

is in his third year reading Classics at Edinburgh. Jo Hare is
in his first year reading Land Management at Reading. Freddy Hare
has started well at King’s Canterbury.
Alexander Harris
is enjoying reading English at Leeds. Katie joins him there next
October after a gap year in India looking in, doubtless, on her uncle
Mark (Tully). Caroline remains at Bryanston and is very keen on
her riding.

keep him out of trouble. (22 May 2008)
Fiona
Hamilton has been made Captain of School ( Benenden's title for
deputy head). She has very happy memories of her time there and
loves coming back.
Tommy Haughton
hit the headlines (well, page 4!) of The Times in February in an article
about top up fees putting more school leavers off university than had
been predicted. Tommy had opted not to go to university two years
earlier and is now apprenticed to Cluttons in East Grinstead as a
trainee land manager where he is doing well.
Emma Hayes
is enjoying her first
job at Hillingdon Hospital as a physiotherapist.
Tom Haynes
is enjoying Stowe where he continues to play bagpipes

apparently suit him very well. Dominic is in his last year at

Matilda, including a spell working for B & Q! He will be joining
Alexander at Edinburgh to study History of Art. Ivo Herries
is well and half way through Eton.
Congratulations to Anthony & Lucy Hayward on Eliza's arrival last
year - a sister for Oliver and Sam. (20 May 2008)
Tom Heywood-Waddington
has enjoyed his time at Exeter while Richard H-W did a stint here
as a gapper and passed his BASI as a ski instructor.
Oliver Hickson (2001- 2007) is having fun at Oundle (5 November
2007)
James Hill
left Marlborough with A
levels in RE, History and Politics and will be applying to universities
now to read Theology. He will be having an exciting gap year working in
a Chinese Anglican primary school in Hong Kong.
Congratulations to
Edward Hills
on his engagement to Virginia Simpkins, a fellow lawyer, who also enjoys
travelling uncomfortably! Ed is still with an American law firm based
in London, but had six months in Saudi.
Olivia Hills
is cooking in a deli in Queenstown, NZ and spends the rest of the time
skiing, ski touring and paragliding. She’d love to see anyone passing
through Queenstown.
Fred Hills
has returned from his early ‘gap year’ and now thinks he’s ready to
attack A levels, probably in London. He had an amazing time in India,
firstly on a mountaineering course with the HMC in Darjeeling with a
girl from New Zealand and 60 Indian army NCOs – quite a mix! – and
latterly working for seven months at Future Hope in Calcutta.
George Hills
is going to Bryanston for A levels. He is still a fanatical rider and
has done a lot of cross country running at school as well as playing
real tennis.
William Holden
gained straight As in Art, Geography & Business Studies/Economics at
Harrow and is off to Newcastle to read Economics.
Indy
Howes
has been made Head of School for 2007.
David
Huang
has just won 2nd prize
in the OEMS (Old Etonian Medical Society) 2006 poster competition, for
non-specialists on disease prevention. The entry topic David presented
was on SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome).
Jojo
Hubbard
is not only Head Prefect at Marlborough, but has also won a coveted
place at Christ Church Oxford to read English. She got a distinction in
her AEA paper in English.
Bertie H
is in most of the same sets at Marlborough as Ed Davison and Alex
Chaize. The three of them form, we gather, the backbone of the Greek
set in their year. Congratulations to Bertie on his Upper School
Scholarship.
Thomas Hutton
studied Islamic Art at Edinburgh University where he obtained a First
and won some prize(s).

Alexander Iltchev
did a summer internship
at Citigroup last year and a 3 month internship at JPMorgan in Paris
before Christmas. He is now back to Paris for a couple of weeks before
he sets out to Argentina until the summer to complete his year abroad.
This summer he is slated for yet another investment banking internship
with Morgan Stanley if I am not mistaken. He has one more year to go at
Oxford. Peter has settled in at Eton without a blink as
expected and has managed to take up his favourite sports. Alex has
already visited him there a couple of times. (4 February 2008)
Kitty
Irby
is in her last year at Bristol UWE and Edward Irby is in his first year
at Oxford Brookes (Politics).

on the back of four A grades at A level, is loving Edinburgh. She is
reading Theology, Scottish Literature and Art History. She directed an
Anthony Minghelles play ‘Cigarettes and Chocolate’.
David
Israelachvili
left Winchester after AS levels and returned to Rome where he studied at
the American Overseas School of Rome. He has just finished his first

either history or philosophy. He hopes to become a Professor and one day
teach at Stanford (“it’s so pretty!”).

Environmental Information Management. He is really enjoying it.
James
Jennings
continues to thrive at Marlborough where he starts AS Maths, Physics,
Politics and RS this year. He enjoys his rugby, polo and athletics
(javelin) and is quick on the buzzer in inter-house general knowledge
competitions.
Hi, it's Tamsin (Jupp). This
is the first time i've been in touch since I sadly left Ashdown so many
years ago. Although I came as young as Mr Williams would allow (having
turned 7 three weeks earlier my mother sent me off in the January), and
left as late as I could, it wasn't long enough. Ashdown was my home. I
loved it as such. My dad often says how I was the only child happy to
board the coach at Portland House, and the only one upset at the end of
term. I got myself into some trouble during my years at Ashdown (in the
boys' area for instance) but remember even my punishment with fondness.
(I did have a certain Williams sister with me so I suppose I deserved
it! Anyway, I left and went to Wycombe Abbey which I hated. I left
school with 9 GCSEs none of which did me any good as I promptly ran away
to Europe, not suprising to anyone who knows me. Many adventures
later I find you all here, settled with a son and fiance, writing a
novel (no this is not it!). I would truly love to hear from anyone who
knows me, or any OAs. Take care. With love Tamsin Gilbert-Jupp. (or
nismat treblig-ppuj as Mr Ansell used to call me)

Sophie Knight

cricket teams and is involved back stage while awaiting his chance on
stage. He is involved with the Chapel brass on his trumpet.
