Netball v Vinehall

1st     Lost  12-14

U12    Won  19-9
On a chilly day, the Ashdown girls rallied together against the visitors. The first quarter of the game saw our girls take the lead, being helped along with Mollie’s impressive centre skills. This winning streak continued throughout the entire game, with Ashdown continuing to score more and more goals. Chloe put on a brave face after injuring her ankle, however with Nationals approaching, she chose to sit and cheer on her team with an ice pack. A big thank you to Claudia who stepped into her position as goal shooter, and ended up scoring three goals! Violet was particularly admired today, with her strong and accurate passes pushing the team towards victory. The concluding score was 19-9 to Ashdown, so congratulations for all the girls who played, and thank you to Vinehall for travelling the distance on the ice covered roads!  HMc

U11A    Won 21-5
Another comfortable win for the U11s. Not the most ideal weather conditions to play netball in with sudden snow showers quickly followed by bright sunshine, but the team brushed all this aside and played some very neat, tidy and efficient netball. As we were ahead by nine goals at half time, playing positions were changed to make a more even game. Ashdown went on to win the match 21-5 and Elizabeth was voted girl of the match by the Vinehall team. JU

IAPS Regional Finals at Roedean

U13
The 1st team played superbly well in the IAPS Regionals. They easily won two of their games against Amesbury 16-0 and Copthorne 5-1.They had a very tight game against St Bedes which they narrowly lost 5-6. It is to their great credit that they played hard and never gave up against Feltonfleet, Danes Hill and Ardingly. These three teams managed to come 1st, 2nd and 3rd in the region which shows what a tough section we had. As their coach I coulden't be more proud of their method of play and commitment over the past few years!  PMc

U12 - WINNERS!
On what can only be described as the most horrendous weather conditions for a tournament the U12s put on the most amazing performance. In their section they won every match - against Brambletye, Dulwich Prep, Vinehall, Westbourne House, Cranleigh, Hazelwood and Cumnor. This put us into a semi final against Danes Hill. This was played in torrential rain and still our girls were totally focussed on the job in hand, winning the game quite convincingly.

Then the final, with all our loyal parents and our headmaster watching whilst battling with their brollies. However, it was worth every moment. The girls looked in command from the first whistle. Our Captain Fantastic for the day, Georgie O'B, was superb, marking her opponent so closely that she was able to make numerous interceptions. Mollie Beale controlled the centre court with her supreme presence,  jumping high to intercept their passes and then sending the ball back into the hands of the brilliant Chloe Yorke. All day Chloe had defended back into the centre whilst also making dynamic runs into the shooting circle to convert the goals. This game can only be played at its very best if all are contributing. Claudia Grace was on fire with a determination I haven't seen  in her before. Violet Mackintosh who is neat, tidy and steady also added a touch of 'Grrr' to defend and get to the ball before her opponent. Nurshahar was definitely wearing her best shooting boots today and couldn't miss, she was excellent! Liz deserves a huge pat on the back, she could barely see in her glasses with all the rain and still made crucial interceptions, defending the circle like a wall. We had two reserves with us, Anna Cayley and Cristina Fontan, who both contributed in the group section and were very much part of this winning team.
Ashdown won the final 5-3 against Westbourne House. The girls received a shield along with a small shield each for this amazing achievement.
This was a complete team performance and Ashdown can be very proud of this group of girls. Roll on the National Final next Saturday at Roedean but please be kinder to us weather! JU

U11

There were 64 teams competing in our region and it is a wonderful sight to see all of our girls playing netball and enjoying the whole atmosphere of the day. The girls got off to a very good start and won their first two matches against Newland House and Rosehill. The next two matches were much tighter though. Against Micklefield we lost by two goals and then drew 2-2 with Guildford. The next three games we won against Oakwood, Brighton and Hove and Royal Russell. This meant that we had come third in our section on goal difference and so had to go into the play-offs. We won the first play-off game playing extremely well. The next and final game was our last chance to get into the National finals and the girls tried so hard but unfortunately missed out by only one goal in a 5-6 thriller against St Michael's.
The girls played brilliantly throughout the day and gained some really valuable experience and many new friends along the way. They came thirteenth out of 64 teams but just missed out with only the top eleven teams qualifying for the National finals. Many thanks to Philippa McCarthy and Delia Saunders for organising this wonderful tournament. JU

Netball v Hurst Prep

1st      Lost 10-20

U12     Won 23-9
Today the Under 12 girls took the journey to Hurst where an especially exciting game of netball was played! With six 7 minutes quarters, there was much time to show the Hurst girls what Ashdown can really do. The first half of the game the girls displayed very impressive ball skills, in particular Georgie O’Brien whose passing and jumping for the opposing ball was brilliant. With this help, the half time score was 15-5 to Ashdown. The dream team of Chloe and Nurshahar was working down the shooting end, portraying some great team work and fantastic dodging to gain possession of the ball. Although Mollie and Georgie were unlucky enough to receive minor injuries, they continued playing with just as much enthusiasm as they began with, so a big well done to them. After a long, and slightly emotion filled game, the girls came out on top, with the final score being 23-9 to Ashdown. Well done girls!

Netball v Bede's

1st      Won 26-12
The girls were in fine form when they played Bede's today. When we had possession we were guilty of a few rather relaxed passes which were quickly snatched by the opposition, but in general we flowed well down the court. Camilla, Sasha and Bota made some superb tip offs and constantly marked well. In the second quarter we drew away from Bede's as we tightened up our passing. Frances came on at goal shooter for the third and fourth quarter and this she played beautifully, she has really come of age over the last week and has secured a position in the 1st team squad. In one of these quarters Helena moved to goal attack and in the other she played wing attack. She proved herself to be very adept in both positions. Patricia played wing attack in the third quarter, she is beginning to make great improvements in both her dodging and passing. Grace played one quarter at wing defence in order to hone her skills at defence and this she did.
'Man' of the match Frances for remarkable improvements!  PMc

2nd      Won 23-2

Michael Jordan, the great American netballer, once said “talent wins games, but teamwork and intelligence win championships”. With the IAPS regionals less than a week away, this U12 team should set their sights firmly on the title as today they proved themselves to be all of the above. From the first whistle, Ashdown dominated of the court. They were quick, slick and under control. Bede’s few attempts to advance were blocked by Georgie whose interceptions were excellent. She always seems to get hold of the ball, even when it appears to be beyond her reach. Liz marked closely in Bede’s circle, intercepting the ball just as her opponent looked sure to have a shot at goal. She read the game very well and knew exactly where to place her back line passes. Working with Mollie, who controls the whole court when playing in the centre position, the defenders ensured that Ashdown retained possession throughout the first half. As a result, Ashdown led 7-0 after ten minutes and 11-0 after twenty. At half time, some positional changes were made to ensure a competitive fixture. Nurshahar, who had a storming game today, came out of the shooting circle into goal attack. Not used to so much movement around the court, she was red-faced by the end of the match! Excellent for her stamina! The accuracy of Nurshahar’s shooting was quite outstanding today. She did not miss a single attempt and she was ably supported by Chloe, who held a strong position throughout the match. Bede’s umpire was very impressed by the standard of play this afternoon. She commented on the wonderful atmosphere at Ashdown, the skill of the U12 team and the outstanding contribution made by Georgie O’Brien to Ashdown’s performance. Well done, girls. Another deserving win!  VR

Under 11A won 14-9

Another good win for the U11A team.  The whole team played really well. Looking forward to the Regional finals next Thursday at Roedean. JU

Under 11B won 8-5

Ardingly Netball Festival

U9       Won 2 games, lost 4 games

The U9 girls were treated to a wonderful morning of netball at the annual Ardingly Festival. Some were expecting fairground rides, balloons and candy floss but once we explained the format of the event, they were quite satisfied with six short matches, netball challenges in shooting, speed and throwing, and Oreo cookies! The highlight of the morning came against Brighton College and Ardingly. After a third defeat, the girls had almost let their heads drop but luckily, they picked themselves up and went on to win two of their final three matches. All of the girls made a worthwhile contribution. Alice and Eloise were a little overwhelmed by the standard of play but they did jolly well to compete as U8s in a tournament for older girls. Eloise, in particular, made sure to scramble for any loose balls and this was very important in helping Ashdown to retain possession. Esme, who moved into the goal keeper position played superbly, intercepting the ball and marking closely. She was awarded the prize for Most Improved Player. Lexi played with determination all morning and she controlled Ashdown’s game. She was awarded the proze for Most Valuable Player – each player was VERY valuable indeed. Well done, girls.VR

Wednesday, 27th February

Netball v Handcross Park

1st        Won 21-8

The girls played superbly today! Ali and Helena were fantastic in the attacking circle, completely dominating it. Sasha and Camilla played the games of their lives in defence making their opponents lives very difficult. Bota, with her new bullet passes, was fantastic; Aiko was always free and Grace, after a few difficult moments, began to work extremely well.  It had gone so well in the first quarter (7-2) that Patricia went to wing attack for the second quarter. She played beautifully and helped us to pull further ahead to 12-2 at half time.

In the third quarter Frances took Helena's position at goal shooter and Patricia moved to wing defence replacing Bota. This proved to be all right although moving two players made quite a difference to the game. In the last quarter we were a little muddled but soon went back to our usual game.
'Man' of the match Camilla Wilkins, Sasha Nikolaeva and Bota Rustem (the defence!)  PMc

2nd       Won 29-0
On an afternoon with a wind that bit through you like GdM through a biscuit, we took on Handcross Park on our courts. It was clear from the beginning that the girls were on form today. From the first centre pass we monopolised the middle of the court and were excellent at retaining possession. The interplay between Mollie and Violet was particularly pleasing to see. Cristina showed some nimble footwork and made sure that any loose ball was brought under our control. At the back we had a cast iron defence. Although they will have busier afternoons, Georgie and Liz stood guard like the Dementors at the gates of Azkaban. What took us to another level today was our shooting. Once we had penetrated their semi-circle, Chloe and Nurshahar were simply ruthless. Like fighter pilots from the Top Gun Academy, Miramar, they locked onto their target and fired. As the match went on we juggled some position around to test our versatility. Claudia and Anna joined the fray and added their own blend of subtlety and attacking panache. This was one of those afternoons where everything seemed to click. Handcross battled hard and were a worthy adversary. We move on to our next fixture in good heart. Well done girls! JG

U11 A Hurst Netball Tournament

The U11s enjoyed a very successful day at the Hurst Netball Tournament. In the group stage they came second in a very tough group.
Results:
Won 5 - 2 v Burgess Hill
Lost 5 - 1 v Westbourne House
Won 5 -1 v Brighton College
Won 5 - 2 v St Christopher's
In the semi final play-off they met the winners of group two, Hurstpierpoint. The girls played extremely well in this match and won 6-1. The final was against Westbourne House whom we had lost heavily to in the group stage. The final was a very competitive match and an excellent display of netball from both teams. Ashdown went 2-1 up at half time. The second half was end to end action and Westbourne House eventually just came out on top by 6-5. The U11s were very excited to receive a well deserved medal each.
I was very proud of the whole team today of Carmen, Elizabeth ,Annabel, Lucy, Emily, Nastia, Scarlett, Eugenia and Hermione. JU

Netball v St Christopher's

U11B     Won 12-0 & 8-3
A long journey to the coast and a chilling sea breeze could have been enough to disrupt the U11B team performance this afternoon but luckily Ashdown girls are made of stronger stuff. The team were ably supported by four U10 players and the girls were treated to two matches; the first against St Christopher’s U11C team and the second against their B team. Ashdown dominated both games, thanks to Mila’s stamina in the centre position, Hitomi’s controlling influence in the attacking third and the tight defence formed by Cordelia and Phoebe. These girls were ably supported by a merry band of capable players, but they really did hold Ashdown game together.

In the first match, Ashdown led 6-0 at half time and some positional changes were made to ensure a competitive fixture. Out of their comfort zones, this tested the girls but Cordelia proved herself to be a capable shooter and Mimi was a calming influence as wing attack, helping slow the pace of the game and deliver neat passes into the circle. In the second match, St Christopher’s started strongly. Emma had little success in the circle, as her goal keeper’s long reach blocked her usual shooting angle. Izzy was shocked into action by a nippy wing attack, but she picked up her pace and began to mark more successfully. A fair result, overall.

Well played girls. Hitomi was nominated ‘girl of the game’ by St Christopher’s in both matches! She really was outstanding.VR

Netball v Sevenoaks

1st             Lost 9-22

Today we played Sevenoaks which is a huge school. We were indoors as there was snow everywhere and it was very cold! The score is not a true reflection of this game. The girls played out of their skins todayand were doing brilliantly up until the last quarter. Ali Mat had a real fight on her hands and she dug deep to achieve brilliantly as did all our girls. At three-quarter time we were only losing 9-15 having drawn the second quarter. I couldn't be more proud of the way these girls faced their opposition. We only had seven girls and Sevenoaks had a squad of 10/12 so they had fresh legs for each quarter. We truly came of age today! Congratulations girls. PMc

U12           Won  8-6
We travelled to Sevenoaks to play am exciting game of netball.  The first half saw Mollie Beale show off her defending skills as well as Cristina showing her excellent breaking for the ball. Having neck to neck scores for the majority of the half, the fast paced half ended with a score of 5-4 to the Sevenoaks girls. Ashdown did very well under pressure with a strict umpire, in particular Georgie O’Brien and Chloe Yorke whose passes were very admirable.  The girls played extremely well and should be proud of their efforts.

3rd

Netball v Cumnor House

U11 A          Won 17-7
Ashdown won the toss so we had first centre which was immediately converted into a goal. We then turned the ball around to our favour and the second goal was ours. As in most games so far this season the girls started strongly and showed their force by going into a 4-1 lead in the first quarter.

All through the first half the girls played extremely well. Our defence of Hermione, Scarlett and Nastia intercepted numerous passes and then quickly sent the ball back up the court to our attackers. In attack, Elizabeth and Carmen neatly slotted the goals in. Our lovely play was all linked together through the mid-court by Emily, Lucy and Annabel. As we were 11-2 up by half time a few changes were made to the team. Scarlett came into the shooting circle and scored three goals whilst Emily played a fine GK. This was another good performance by the U11s and Emily was voted girl of the match by the Cumnor team. A nice birthday present for her. JU

U11B/U10    Won 10-7
This was an action packed match with plenty of interception and snatching.  From the first whistle, Ashdown had a real presence on the court.  Hitomi Sato and Mila Novick controlled the centre third.  They found spaces, marked tightly and fed the circle with accuracy.  As a result, Ashdown dominated the first 10 minutes.  The rest of the game was more even and Cumnor made good use of their height to intercept high passes.  Still, too many Ashdown ball are being sent into the hands of our opposition.  Nevertheless, despite the stubbornness of the ball to actually fall through the net rather than dancing around the ring, Ashdown went on to win this match.  Eliza Gethin scored six goals and Phoebe Wells and Antonia Elrick scored two apiece.  Cumnor nominated Hitomi as ‘man of the match’ but Cordelia, Antonia and Mila also deserve a special mention:  as under 10s, they held their own in this U11 match.  Well done, girls.  VR

Saturday, 9th February

Netball v Brambletye

1st     Lost 17-22
To say that we started badly would be something of an understatement! By the end of the first quarter we were languishing at 1-8. The girls were slow off the blocks or moving too early and were also making wild diagonal passes. They upped their game considerably in the second quarter and only lost that 6-9. Brambletye kindly gave us a chance in the third quarter by moving three of their players. We accepted this gift, pulled our game up further and took the quarter 4-2. With the score now at 10-19 all players on court were back in their accepted positions with the exception of Sasha who had a badly sprained ankle, but typically refused to be taken off. Therefore I switched her to goal keeper to decrease the amount of the court she needed to cover and placed Camilla into goal defence. We played our best quarter and managed to unsettle Brambletye's run of play. Therefore we took the quarter 7-6. These girls need to learn to warm up properly before a match in order to start as they mean to go on!   'Man' of the match Sasha Nikolaeva for tenacity  PMc

2nd     Won  22-8
The girls played an incredible game of netball today. Working together as a team we were ahead for the whole match, not letting Brambleye take the lead. The girls played brilliantly, and showed great skill on the court.   All should be very proud.   JA

3rd

Under 11A    Won 16-9

The U11s were on great form this Saturday. As they have a history of slow starts,I wanted them to begin the match much faster today and try to get ahead in the first quarter. So it was most pleasing that they went 4-2 up early on. All the girls played extremely well today. Their marking was excellent and their speed down the court was like lightning. The Brambletye umpire complimented our girls on their performance and named Elizabeth girl of the match for her overall presence on the court. Ashdown ran out winners by 16 to 9.  JU

Wednesday, 6th February
Cranleigh U13 Tournament
1st
A very long drive took us to freezing temperatures at Cranleigh. The wind was whistling around as we headed to the netball courts on the top of the hill. We had barely ten minutes to catch our breath before we headed in to the first match. The girls began on the back foot and never showed what they are made of. The positives that we can gain from this are fact that they never gave up and we have seen many chinks in our armour that we can work on in the coming weeks. Mollie and Georgie played their debuts for the 1st team and they showed that, with a little more work, they can indeed become very useful netball players. The girls won 2 matches but lost the other 4. We will continue to hone our skills as we move on towards the regionals. PMc
Netball v St Aubyn's

2nd     Won  20-7
After a bit of a rushed beginning, the girls stepped right into position and played perfectly. The first quarter concluded with a score of 5-0 to Ashdown. Charas demonstrated some terrific manoeuvering and breaking for the ball, which of course was greatly appreciated by her team mates. St Aubyn's scored two goals in the second quarter, with Ashdown still being ahead six points. This was achieved with the help of Cristina and her strong chest passes and dodging for the ball. After the half time oranges, the girls were back at it, and soon finished the game with an exciting score of 20-7 to Ashdown. St Aubyn's decided that the 'Man of the Match' would go to Nurshahar, for her great shooting throughout the game. Overall, the girls played very well, and definitely deserved their win. Thank you to St Aubyn's for travelling the distance, as well as the parents who came and supported their girls.
  HMcD

U11A
In the first quarter of eight minutes duration Ashdown were 8-0 up and completely dominating the game. So to make the match more competitive the team changed positions and Mila from the U10s came on to play centre. Although it was absolutely freezing cold the girls seemed to enjoy the afternoon of netball and much fun was had on court. The final score was 17-4 to Ashdown. JU

Saturday, 2nd February

Netball v Holmewood House

1st        Lost 17-18
This match began quite well for about four minutes when we held Holmewood to 2-2; then the sheer size of Holmewood's defending and attacking pairs overwhelmed us. During the next six minutes we went 2-8 down.

During quarter time I explained at length the issues we were facing and how we could best overcome them with intelligent play. The girls took this firmly on board and managed to win the second quarter 5-4 and the third quarter 5-1. By this stage we were only one goal adrift. Holmewood began to fight back in the fourth quarter and managed to hold us to a draw. Thus a very narrow defeat was the final result.

Frances Young and Chloe Yorke really came of age during this match. They played superbly! Aiko Eliot and Bota Rustem were superb in the centre court, making incredible interceptions and passing cleanly with speed and accuracy. Camilla Wilkins and Sasha Nikolaeva worked fantastically well to hold their very tall attacks at bay. Ali Mathison managed to alter her shot so that she could score regularly over the hand of her defender. A fantastic performance by the whole team!  PMc

2nd         Lost 5-19
The girls played a fantastic home game against the visitors. First quarter showed positive results with the Ashdown ahead 3-1. Claudia demonstrated some impressive passes, which helped move the team along. The second quarter concluded with Homewood House taking the lead with a score of 8-5 to in their favour. After sharing some orange slices between the teams, the girls were back at it, trying their very best to meet the opposing team's score. Although Nursharha's defending and ball skills were to be admired, Ashdown left second best with the final score of 19-5 to Homewood House. Overall, the girls worked very well together as a team, and showed great sportsmanship when congratulating the other girls at the end. Thank you for the many parents who attended the game and cheered on their girls, and thank you to Homewood House for travelling out to play the match.   HMc

U11A      Won 15-8
In the first quarter Holmewood looked the slightly stronger team as they went 6-4 ahead. However, in the second quarter Ashdown marked their opponents much more closely and started to turn the ball over which resulted in the score being pulled back to 7-6 to Ashdown. In fact, Holmewood had not scored a single goal in that quarter and most of this was due to some magnificent defending from Eugenia and Scarlett.

The second half was mostly Ashdown's as the girls played some really nice netball. The thing that always shines through with these girls is their overall fitness and strength which is very pleasing to watch. Girl of the match must go to Eugenia whose defending in the circle was super today and her overall improvement on the netball court is astonishing. JU

U10       Won 7-5
On a chilly afternoon, this U10/9 team were delighted with a win against Holmewood House.  Ashdown won the first centre pass and the ball was sent quickling into the shooting circle.  Emma had two good attempts but the ball skirted the ring before bouncing off court.  Holmewood seized their opportunitiy to score but within seconds, Antonia equalised with an outstanding goal from the edge of the circle.  Even she was surprised by the accuracy of the shot!  An even match, it was 3-2 to Holmewood after ten minutes.  In the second quarter, Ashdown began to dominate.  Fed by Mila's strong overhead passes into the circle, Antonia and Emma scored three goals in quick succession. Holmewood could not match this as Cordelia and Lexi marked tightly in the defending third, intercepting passes and catching rebounds.  By half time, it was 6-2 to Ashdown.  Having been a key player in the attcking third, Lily started to suffer from the cold and Ashdown's scoring slowed in the second half.  Nonetheless, we managed to hold Holmewood House to 7-5! Man of the match: Antonia Elrick   VR

Netball      Hurst Tournament

1st VII came 3rd
The girls played quite well in their section to win all their matches. Every player made some magnificent moves but also had a few bizarre moments! Chloe made  her 1st team debut. She began full of nerves and ended with magnificent confidence. Ali was a great captain and generally led by example. Grace was a little under par due to recoverying from illness, so she played in just half of most matches to conserve her strength. Aiko was steady and efficient at all times. Bota really tried to keep 3 feet from her player, she achieved this well and made some incredible interceptions. Sasha made her goal attack's life very difficult and was always making great space. Camilla stuck like glue to her shooter and made fantastic tip offs. Frances worked beautifully with Ali at shooter making good use of the circle.

v St Andrew's 6-3
v Notre Dame 13-0
v Pennthorpe 6-2
v Brighton 5-4
v Bedes 10-6

In the semi final we played Hurst. It was definitely our best match of the day. We were leading 4-2 in the second half, but allowed them back into the game. With just 3 seconds to go we gave away a penalty. Sadly they scored to equal. We then played the golden goal. Hurst had the centre pass and despite our best efforts they retained possession to score!

Thus we went into the 3rd/4th play off, here we beat St Andrew's 6-3 to come third in the tournament. The final between Hurst and Windlesham was narrowly won by Windlesham 2-1 proving that had we just held on in the semi final we would have been in with a chance. We did not lose a game in the tournament except in the golden goal. A great achievement!  PMc

Netball v Lingfield Notre Dame

2nd VII      Won 13-12

We travelled to Lingfield to play a very impressive match. The Ashdown girls got off to a great start in the first quarter with a score of 3-0. Cristina was seen to throw some very admirable passes, and was a great team player throughout the game by subbing on and off. The second quarter was by far the girls' best performance as it concluded with a score of 9-0 to Ashdown. Following this, Annabel took advantage of her height and intercepted many passes by the other team. After another two well played quarters, the final score was 13-2 to Ashdown House, so very well done to all the girls. A particular mention goes to Violet who was the 'Man of the Match' for all her intercepts, passes, and overall fair play throughout the entire game.  HMc

Under 11A  Won 22-8
How nice to get back onto the Netball court and play a match. The wind played a significant  roll in today's game so short sharp passing was required to keep the ball in play and this was  exactly what the U11s did. In fact they played superbly with every single girl giving the game her  full concentration and commitment.

Eugenia and Scarlett defended the circle and gave very little opportunity for Lingfield to score. Nastia had a fantastic game, making many interceptions and she really worked her socks off. Emily, steady as always, linked up all the play right down the court. Lucy's ball handling was extremely good with some super passes into the circle. Carmen used her height to great advantage in the shooting circle retrieving missed shots and balls off the back line.

Girl of the match today goes to Elizabeth. Her passing was top notch and her shooting was outstanding, hardly missing a shot. She also defended back down the court and on three occasions she made an interception, then got back into the circle to take on a shot and score.

Finally, I must mention that although Ashdown was the stronger team throughout, at no time did Lingfield give up and I am sure as the season progresses they will improve no end.  JU

Under 11B  Lost 4-5
Today we had a very close encounter with Lingfield Notre Dame. After five minutes of play, two goals had been scored by Eliza who maintained her excellent shooting skills throughout the match. From the minute the whistle blew, Annabel had great spirit and was the team Duracell Bunny. In the first two quarters, Ashdown was in the lead with 2-0, 3-0 however Ashdown seemed to loose momentum as the match progressed and Lingfield managed to catch up by scoring three goals in the third quarter and the final two goals in the last quarter. Excellent play from the team captain, Pheobe, who always managed to find a free space on the court. Hermione and Estella must be commended on their excellent defending today. It was a very close match and all the players must be congratulated on their excellent effort and team work. Well done girls. JG

Under 10 (Triangular with Cumnor)    Lost 1-4, Lost 2-3
This afternoon’s netball was a messy display but the results are pleasing nonetheless.   In the shooting circle, Antonia and Emma make a good combination.  With Emma’s quick footwork and Antonia’s long reach, they maximize every opportunity to score.  Their passing in the circle is neat.  Both girls have worked hard on their technique with excellent results.  Only a few weeks ago, it looked as if the U10 team was to be without a capable shooter and now we have two!   In the centre third, it was very muddled.  Crowding around the ball made it difficult to identify free players and much of the passing went straight to an opponent's hands.  This was disappointing as the shooters were given little time with the ball.  Lexi, Jemima and Lily joined the U10 team this afternoon and they all played very well.  As goalkeeper, Lexi was very feisty and she made sure to lift off the ground to snatch every rebound.  She needs to work on her back line passes but she has great potential in this position.  Lily is a real terrier on the court and she dodges her opponents with ease.   Jemima is fearless and she flies through the air to intercept high passes.  A lovely afternoon and great preparation for the Cumnor tournament later this term.  Man of the Match:  Lexi Burgoyne.   VR

Netball v St Andrew's

1st                    Won 22-15
The bitterly cold day did not faze the girls, or indeed the stalwart supporters! We began slowly not making the passes count and found the defending of the shot to be of a very high standard. We were just one goal up at the end of the first quarter. We began to play more efficiently in the second quarter and Ali and Helena got the measure of their defenders. We pulled away by 2 more goals. The beginning of the third quarter was somewhat messy and we gave St Andrews a way back. Luckily in the second period of this quarter we played our own efficient and neat game with just a dash of incredible interception. This meant that we ended the third quarter 5 ahead. The final quarter was probably our best.  'Man' of the match Sasha Nikolaeva      PMc

2nd                     Won 30-12
Ashdown did extremely well today despite being down on players. Phoebe and Hitomi stepped in and played very well, with Phoebe making some very impressive intercepts and Hitomi performing some great passes. At half time, Ashdown was in the lead with a score of 14-4. Our shooters, Frances and Lucy, got almost every goal in and were really encouraging to the rest of the team. Overall, the ‘man of the match’ was awarded to Phoebe, for her generally good play and strong intercepts. Once concluded, the girls lined up and congratulated the opposing team with a cheer and a hand shake. A huge well done to all the teams involved, and thank you to St Andrews for travelling the distance to play. HMc

U12                  Won 11-4
The under 12s played an incredible game against a very aggressive and determined St Andrew's at home.  Despite the cold temperatures, the girls were scorching on the court, proving that they have what it takes. Chloe, Mollie and match Captain, Georgie, led the team to an impressive win. They should all be very proud of themselves.  JA

U11A                Won 15-3
The under 11s got off to a storming start in the first quarter of this match against St Andrew's. They were 7-0 up and all playing extremely well in their established positions. In our attack, Emily's passing into the shooting circle was superb which enabled our two excellent shooters, Elizabeth and Carmen, to shoot the goals. In the second quarter everybody changed position to make the match more even. However, regardless of the position the girls were asked to play, they all performed really well. We went on to win the match 14-3. A brilliant start to the winter season. JU

Under 10           Wn 8-0
The U10 girls played with energy and enthusiasm this afternoon, despite freezing temperatures on the court.  From the first whistle, Ashdown stood out as the stronger team and we retained possession throughout most of the match.  We marked tightly in all thirds, which made it difficult for St Andrew
’s to find free players, and so we won the ball by interception or penalty.  The girls are still using too many passes to send the ball down court, but it got there in the end.  In the shooting circle, there were great improvements.  Emma moved into the goal attack position.  Her neat passing, feisty snatching of the ball and nifty footwork are an asset.  She scored two lovely goals.   She was ably supported by Eliza who, despite her tendency to wait for the ball to land in her hands, scored four goals.  Eliza shoots beautifully from anywhere in the circle. For the last quarter, Antonia moved back to her favourite position and she scored two goals too.  There is going to be competition for the attacking positions in weeks to come!  Well done, girls.  A promising start to the term.   VR

U9                    Lost 12-13
Ashdown House under 9s travelled to St Andrew's school to play their first away game for this term. They came up against some tough competition and played extremely well showing amazing teamwork and sportsmanship.  Unfortunately it wasn’t quite enough losing in a tight game of 12-13. Well done to all the girls and great improvement has been seen all.  JG

Netball v Rose Hill

U11A won 18-8
These girls are a very talented bunch. They now need to start to use their brains as well as their natural ability. Once the opposition has worked out one strategy, alter it. Eugenia is really beginning to understand the role of goal keeper, but must watch her distance. Scarlett made fantastic tip offs, but must take care with pass accuracy. Nastia made incredible interceptions, but must be careful not to over balance. Emily linked the attack and defence beautifully, but must consider her positioning on court. Lucy dodged fantastically well, but she must pass harder and faster in order not to miss opportunities. Elizabeth was deadly accurate in her shooting, Carmen moved well round the circle, but these two must definitely ring the changes in the circle area when it comes to their tactical moves.  ‘Man’ of the match:  the whole team!  PMc

U11B v Rose Hill- lost 3-4

U10   v Rose Hill  lost 5-9
A surprise early start to this match! However these girls took this in their stride and came out fighting.  We began well going two goals up. Then complacency and sloppy passing allowed the opposition into the game. These girls can all play well, but Antonia must work on her dodging  and Mila needs to calm her play in order to stop over balancing to ensure her passes reach her team mates.  Mimi, Emma and Lily played quietly, efficiently and well on the wings. Cordelia made fantastic interceptions only to pass the ball behind the dodging player straight into the arms of the opposition in a panic reaction. Lexi worked very well at keeper sticking beautifully with her player and picking up many loose balls. Eliza was neat efficient and mainly deadly accurate and thus was my ‘Man’ of the match. Much to work on but great promise U10s.  PMc

Netball v Roedean
1st VII Lost 16-18
A beautiful afternoon at the seaside with some lovely girls! The netball showed some great strengths and a few weaknesses. Helena St John had the game of her life and really came of age.  She has learnt to snatch the ball. Ali played fantastically well. Grace was moving too early and was therefore being caught by her partner, who had extendable arms! Aiko played beautifully and was always free. Bota made some great interceptions, but must take control before she releases the ball. Sasha and Camilla commanded the defending circle beautifully making life very difficult for their very tall opposition. A great match which we could have won. 'Man' of the match Helena St John  PMc
Netball Triangulars with Brambletye and Cottesmore
Under 11A Won 6-2, Won 7-6
We played a triangular tournament today and in the first game Brambletye beat Cottesmore 3-0. Ashdown then played Brambletye in a very close encounter. Both teams put in a huge effort and provided the spectators with continuous end to end excitement. At half time the score was 3-3 but in the second half Ashdown just managed to hold on to a one goal advantage to win the match 7-6. In the last match Ashdown kept up the good work and won 6-2 against Cottesmore. So a good afternoon's work from the U11s and a nice way to end the first half of the season. Well done girls. JU
Under 10 Drew 1-1, Lost 3-5
What a fabulous finale to a busy term on the netball court. The U10 girls showed great improvements and were deserving of second place in this afternoon’s triangular. From the first whistle, the match against Brambletye was very close. On winning the first centre, slick passing sent the ball quickly into our shooting circle where Antonia was ably supported by Hitomi. The passing between these girls was faultless which allowed Hitomi to take a number of shots, each narrowly missing. A confident start, nonetheless, and this helped Ashdown to maintain their strength throughout the 20 minutes. The second match was much more demanding and the girls struggled to keep up with Cottesmore who were very quick to move around the court. Some fantastic interceptions by Estella and Cordelia were crucial to keeping Cottesmore’s score low and Phoebe was sure to snatch at every rebound. Having lost 1-13 to Cottesmore only a week ago, today’s result was tremendous! All of the girls played well this afternoon and it is too difficult to choose an outstanding player. Man of the match: All eight girls! Hitomi, Antonia, Mila, Emma, Mimi, Estella, Cordelia and Phoebe. Well done, ladies. You’ve made pleasing progress this term and I look forward to the next. VR
Under 9 Lost 0-7, Lost 3-13
It was very cold today but, despite their burning fingers, the girls all tried their best and made me proud. We played Brambletye first. Unfortunately all their players were much taller than ours so they had an advantage there.  We tried our best, but unfortunately we still lost. Lily Moore had a great game and did not give up once. We then played against Cottesmore and lost 3-13 but this was a great improvement to our last score against them. Lexi and Esme played extremely well together and managed to score 3 amazing goals between them. Despite the results, the triangular was a great way to end the season off. Well done girls! TM

Netball v Holmewood House
1st VII Lost 10-19
This was an extremely cold day and we were slightly depleted in personnel, thus Frances Young made her debut in the 1st team. She did this with great fortitude! All the girls played extremely well, fighting for every ball. We had as much of the play as Holmewood, particularly in the centre court. However we were somewhat challenged in both the attacking and defending circles. If we missed a shot we were unable to gain the rebound and thus lost possession. Holmewood were also able to use their height to great advantage in their attacking circle. Holmewood's coach commended our girls for their tenacity! 'Man' of the match Ali Mathison  PMc

2nd VII Lost 3-26
We had a tough game against Holmewood.  I'm not sure whether the cold was to blame or whether it was the fact that we didn't have any true shooters due to illness or whether they were just a much stronger team? They started off rather poorly, not scoring anything in the first quarter. In the second quarter the girls put in a lot more effort and started to make some nice intercepts and get the ball flowing down to our end. Alexandra made some great turnovers which was positive for the team after losing the ball quite often due to messy passes. Phoebe and Patricia stepped in at GS and GA. They struggled with the positions to begin with as they were slightly out of their comfort zones, but once they found their feet and took advice on board they put in a tremendous effort at trying to score goals for the team. Ellie did really well at WD, sticking with her opposition and putting her under a lot of pressure. Charas ensured she was always available for the pass by creating nice space to be passed in to. I feel as though the girls could have done better, but unfortunately Holmewood seemed to get the better of them!
LC
Under 11A Lost 10-12
This was a very close encounter with Holmewood House. After five minutes of play no goals had been scored;  then suddenly, in very quick succession, Ashdown scored four lovely goals, two from Carmen and two from Elizabeth. So, going into the second quarter, we thought that we had a nice little buffer. However, eight minutes later Holmewood had taken a 6-5 lead. For the second half, Annabel was moved into the WA position and Nastia to WD. Scarlett and Eugenia stepped up their play in defence and made some super interceptions. Emily as centre really had her work cut out with a very quick opponent, but she played superbly, shadow marking the centre, intercepting the ball on the move and then accurately passing in to our shooters. Ashdown won this quarter to make the score 8-7, so all was to play for in the final quarter. Unfortunately, Holmewood came out of the blocks much quicker than us and our passing let us down as they scored five and we only managed two. Holmewood won the match 12-10 in a great game where both teams played well. Girl of the match today was Emily Bland for her outstanding all round play.   JU

Under 10 Won 5-3

Today, the U10 girls won their first match of the season! Hooray! It was a close game: 1-0, 2-0, 2-1, 3-1, 3-2, 4-3 and 5-3. Even on this chilly afternoon, there were noticeable improvements in every area of the court. The biggest improvement, however, came in the shooting circle. Antonia had a fantastic game as goal attack. She has worked incredibly hard on her body position and handling of the ball. She made contact with the post a number of times and scored four beautiful goals. Her positioning on the court has also improved. Rather than crowding the ball, she headed straight for the circle and was ready to receive a strong pass from Mila. She leapt high in the air to snatch the ball and she used her intelligence to dodge her opponent. She was careful to steady herself on the slippery court and she worked effectively with Estella and Lucy who shared the goal shooter position. What a star! All of the girls played well this afternoon and they were absolutely delighted to have emerged victorious. Man of the match: Antonia Elrick  VR

Netball v Cottesmore

1st VII Lost 11-26
A slighty depleted 1st team stepped up for this match. They worked well but were missing their usual continuity. Cottesmore had a very tall and efficient attacking pair who made our lives very complicated. Bota made many excellent tip offs but we did not manage to capitalise on them. Ali and Aiko played superbly and, on the back of this plus their work thus far in the season, they were awarded their colours. 'Men' of the match Aiko Eliot and Alexandra Mathison  PMc

Under 11A Won 15-6
An excellent win for the U11s today. All the team played neat and tidy netball up until the last quarter when Cottesmore seemed to find some shooting form and made a huge effort to win that quarter. This team seem to be cementing their places now and read each other really well around the court so that, at times, we look very special indeed. Ashdown won the game 15-6 with girl of the match going to Scarlett who seems to have ignited that fire in her belly again. JU
Under 10 Lost 1-13
The U10 girls played skilfully this afternoon but, once again, difficulties in the shooting circle led to a defeat.  Eliza's absence due to illness was noticeable as Antonia and Estella, despite improving significantly, could not quite get the ball through the net.  There were some promising passages of play, particularly in the second half, with the defenders stealing the Ashdown show.  Cordelia made some fantastic interceptions and she was an utter nuisance in the Cottesmore shooting circle.  It would have been great to see her and Mimi jumping up for rebounds though - something to work on.   As wing defence, Emma played her best game of the term.  Her tip-offs were excellent and she used her pace to mark effectively.  Her opponent could not get free which left the Cottesmore goal-attack with few options.  Mila worked effectively in defence too.  Leaning forward into the circle to recevie the back line passes, it was impossible to mark her.  Her centre passes were spot on, despite the fact that Phoebe and Antonia were marked closely.  Cottesmore made a strong start this afternoon but their scoring rate was slowed from the second quarter.  Well done, girls.  VR
Under 9 Lost 7-21
The girls had a tough game on Saturday.  It was very cold and the courts were a bit slippery, but they did not let this bother them.  Jemima had an extremely tall partner and she fought so hard and often did some fantastic interceptions. Lexi and Esme were shooting some amazing goals and worked very well together. Unfortunately the opposition was a bit stronger and we ended up losing 7-21. I was very proud of the girls despite the score. TM

Netball v Sackville

1st VII          Lost 12-17
Today the 1st team really came of age - what a performance!  The girls played very hard in the first quarter which they lost 3-4. Aiko was a revelation at centre linking the attack and defence beautifully. Bota was incredible at wing defence making some superb interceptions, this is definitely her position. In the second quarter we held Sackville to a draw until the last two minutes when we lost our way and allowed them to slot in four quick goals.
After half time we came out fighting. Ali and Helena had got the measure of their defenders and they both had the best ten minutes of netball of their lives! Grace had learnt to speed up her passing and the effect of this into the circle was electric. Sasha played as a girl possessed making some superb tip offs which came our way allowing us to regain possession. Patricia who was playing her debut match for the 1st team patiently and efficiently plucked the ball from the air, and leant beautifully each time our opponents shot. We took this quarter 4-2.
In the final quarter we continued to play superbly;  however they managed to win that one 4-2 due mainly to some superb shooting.
'Man' of the match- The whole team   PMc
2nd VII         Won 8-5
First win of the season! I am extremely proud of the 2nd netball team for their win against Sackville today. We were down 1-2 in the first quarter but managed to creep our way up to an 8-5 win. The girls played with strength on both attack and defence. It was lovely to see the ball flow so nicely down the court. It was challenging playing in damp weather because the courts were quite slippery, but as soon as the girls slowed the pace of the game, they were able to have more control over their footwork. Annabel played fantastically at goal defence, intercepting most balls that got in to their goal circle making it difficult for them to score. Claudia did all that her position at centre required, ensuring she was always available for the next pass. She was zipping in and out of her opponent and driving forward for the ball. Lucy and Frances weren’t communicating very well in the circle to begin with, but once they started reading each others tactics of play, it worked really well and they were able to put more shots up, leading us to victory!  LC

Netball v Hawthorns

Under 10 Lost 0-21
This afternoon, Ashdown was outplayed in every aspect of the game. It was clear from the first whistle that Hawthorns was a much stronger team. Their passing was very slick. They marked tightly and every shot was on target. On losing the first half  0-8, we hoped that our opposition might weaken their side in order to give us a sporting chance or at least ensure the enjoyment of all. This was not the case and the U10 girls were left to battle their hardest. Ashdown’s best quarter was the second. They conceded only one goal by improving their marking. Cordelia made some excellent interceptions, as did Antonia. Hard luck, girls. You did very well to keep going throughout the 40 minutes. VR
Netball v Handcross Park
Under 9 Lost 2-6
In the first three minutes Ashdown took a 1-0 lead and seemed to be in total control. We then had quite a few injury incidents and the whole team seemed to lose focus. By half time Handcross had turned the score around and were leading 2-1. Unfortunately our passing of the ball today was in another dimension.  We could not get the ball back into our attack, so consequently Handcross had lots more shooting opportunities. By the third quarter they were 4-1 ahead. In the last quarter some momentum came back into Ashdown's game. We had a few more shots at goal and converted one of them. The final score was 6-2 to Handcross Park, which was a fair result on the balance of play. Back to the courts tomorrow for some passing practice. JU

Netball v St Ronan's
1st VII Won 14-10
This was a tough game, which was exactly what this group of girls needed! Ali and Helena worked tirelessly in the shooting circle making some good drives. The shooting was slightly below par but they both know what they need to do to overcome that issue!
Aiko was superb at wing attack, always free and passing with great intelligence! Grace and Bota worked well although there was some muddling of position which we need to work on. Sasha and Camilla made fantastic interceptions although they found it difficult to get the ball out of our defending end. As a team we must learn to time our dodges as we currently go too early and are left stranded in no man's land!
'Man' of the match Ali and Aiko        PMc

2nd VII Lost 4-6
We travelled to St. Ronan's where the 1st and 2nd teams played their games back to back in the sports hall. The 1st team played their match first which enabled the 2nds to watch how they played and pick up some tactics. It was a very close game with a final score or 6-4 to St Ronan's. This was quite frustrating as I feel we could have won this game. We definitely started off as the stronger team, taking the lead for the first half of the game. The girls played brilliantly on attack, dominating the game by getting the passes straight down the court to Lucy and Frances in the goal circle just as we've been practising. Lucy and Frances made a lovely duo, reading the circle well and knowing exactly where to pass. Claudia and Ellie as wing attack and centre also worked well and tried really hard to get the ball in to the goal circle. If ever the ball got turned over, Alex, Patricia and Annabel, our trusty defenders, ensured the ball made its way back down to our end immediately. Annabel's long arms practically stopped anything coming her way. In the third quarter, St Ronan's started to get the better of us. We started to get a bit tired and lazy which they used to their advantage by picking up any stray ball and getting it down to their shooters who confidently got them, allowing them to creep up from 2-1 to us, to 4-3 to them. However our defenders didn't give up, Camilla was fantastic at holding back then popping out to grab the intercepts which was great to see because, not only did we get the ball, but it shows her understanding of the game. The girls played well, but next time they need to make sure they play 'their' game the whole way through!  LC
Under 11A Won 15-0
Just five minutes into this match and the U11s were 6-0 up. They were playing at such a fast pace it was hard to keep up with them. Emily and Lucy linked up extremely well in the attack and instinctively knew where the other was. The speed of their passing was just too much to handle for the St Ronan's defence. Elizabeth, who has the maturity of a much older player, can see, and then execute, a long quick pass into Carmen in a fraction of a second. Carmen is strong and patient. She waits for the pass and then clinically pops in the goal. When the ball made it into the St Ronan's attack it was very quickly snuffed out, either by Hermione, who is improving with every match, or by Scarlett, with her magnificent reach. Player of the match today was Nastia. She marked the tallest girl in the St Ronan's team who did not impede her at all. She jumped higher, ran faster, and completely dominated that part of the court. Ashdown won this shortened match in the barn 15-0. A huge thanks to the supporting parents for creating such a great atmosphere. One to remember, well done girls. JU

Under 10 Lost 3-6
Mrs Upton kindly umpired this afternoon's match which enabled me to watch the U10 girls more closely. Despite the result, Ashdown was stronger on the court. We had more opportunities to score than St Ronan's but Antonia is still struggling to apply enough power behind the ball to reach the higher hoop and Eliza found it difficult to get free from the goalkeeper. Antonia was marked by an U12 player which made her job even more difficult. Today’s matches were played in the Barn. This worked to Ashdown's advantage as it gave the U10 girls an opportunity to use the long overhead passes which they have been practising in lessons. Emma played with much greater purpose today. She was fantastic at finding spaces to receive the ball from Cordelia and she passed accurately into the shooting circle. Along with Mila, they made sure that Ashdown’s shooters had plenty of possession. Mimi played a crucial role in the centre third. In receiving the ball from Izzy, she provided a safe pair of hands. Now, she must try to keep up with her opponent and tighten her marking. Once again, Mila was ‘man of the match’. Every centre pass was delivered with strength and accuracy. On passing the ball, she ran ahead to receive again and she played a solid defensive role. She is the only girl who is truly exhausted at the end of a match! A jolly close game of netball. The U10/11 team are improving every week. Well done, girls. VR)

Netball v Moira House

Under 11A        Won 12-1
In the first quarter this team showed how well they are gelling together. The girls' movement down the court was superb and with neat, tidy netball skills by the end of the first quarter they were 6-0 up. To make the game more competitive we made some positional changes. It was good to see that, although the girls were out of position, they still played to the best of their ability. Scarlett scored a goal, as did Hermione and Anastasia. Emily scored two lovely goals and the rest of the goals came from Elizabeth and Carmen, who are now working extremely well together in the shooting circle. Moira House made a marked improvement in the last quarter and scored from a neat passage of play. Ashdown won the match 12-1, a well deserved win. Girl of the match goes to 'the whole team'. JU

Under 11B        Won 3-2
The Under 11 B's had a very close game against Moira House with a final score of 3-2 to Ashdown. It was a slow start with only one goal being scored in the first half and the ball flying from one end of the court to the other without actually going through the hoop. Eliza soon got the ball rolling by scoring the first goal for Ashdown in the third quarter- and a great shot it was too! Hitomi played an excellent centre today ensuring she did everything a centre is meant to do, trying hard on both attack and defence. Some basic mistakes were made which unfortunately gave away the ball, throwing the ball to the opposition is never a good idea! In saying this, we did very well in defence. Estella and Momoko made some cracking intercepts. Izzy and Flora did some great work on the wings, they are really coming in to their own at those positions. There were moments where the ball flowed beautifully down the court which was really nice to see! It took a while for Phoebe to get used to her position as goal attack but once she'd got a feel for it she started to play some nice netball. She worked well with Hitomi and Eliza getting the ball into the goal circle and although she was slightly nervous to shoot, she put up a lovely shot giving us that one point ahead. It was a delight taking the Under 11s today and I wish them luck for their games to come.  LC

Netball v St Aubyn's

Under 9            Won 10-6
This was a really super match! Sadly we could only field six players due to sickness, but St Aubyn’s were kind enough to play 6-a-side with no wing defence.
Esme played with assurance around our shooting circle, Lexi played with drive going for every ball with great purpose. These two shared our goals equally. Eloise has come on in leaps and bounds over the short time that she has been playing. Lily was electric in the centre never allowing an opportunity to be missed.  Jemima made many superb tip offs and interceptions and Tabitha has improved immensely this term. She now has a good court presence and uses her intelligence to find space very well. Man’ of the match Lily Moore    PMc

Cumnor House Under 13 Netball Versatility Tournament
1st VII
3rd in Tournament!
Squad Ali M, Helena St.J, Grace C, Bota R, Aiko E, Camilla W, Sasha N, Lucy H (debut)
v Windlesham B 6-1
v Brighton Senior school B 9-0
v Cumnor House 4-0
v Brighton prep 7-4
v Cranleigh 0-5
v Brighton Senior school A 3-4
v Brighton Prep A 4-6
v Windlesham A 4-3
The girls did really well today. They began with great determination and took their first 4 matches with relative ease. We lost to an efficient team from Cranleigh. Sadly straight after that, our heads slightly down, we came unstuck against the Brighton Senior A team, in a match we never should have lost, but that is often the way in versatility tournaments. We played superbly against Brighton prep A only losing by 2 goals in a hard fought game. We played really well to take our last match against Windlesham A's. Third in the tournament is a great achievement however second place was within our grasp if we had taken the match that we should have won! Next time girls! Lucy Hunt played superbly in her 1st team debut! PMc

Netball v Dorset House

Under 11A Won 16 – 8
After waiting for some heavy rain and hail to pass we were then able to start the match where initially both teams were very careful to avoid slipping. An even start saw Ashdown just two goals ahead after the first quarter with a 5-3 lead. In the second quarter Ashdown asserted some dominance and put six more goals on the score sheet. This was mainly due to the excellence of Elizabeth's play as she scored all six goals and also defended well with a number of interceptions in the centre third. Eugenia, who was playing GD today, also showed some extremely good defending skills. With many reserves on the side lines we could try a few different team selections. Hitomi came on to play WA and is improving by the day. Her footwork and passing of the ball has really come on and she will most definately be pressing for a place in the A team. Although at the end of the third quarter Ashdown was ahead 15-5, Dorset House made a super effort in the last quarter to win it 3-1. The final score was 16-8 to Ashdown, a well deserved win. JU

Netball v Cottesmore

Under 10 Lost 2 – 3
Last year, this team beat Cottesmore so this afternoon’s result was a little disappointing. Hailstones drove the match indoors but cheers echoed round the Barn in support of both teams in this close fight. From the first whistle until the last, the U10 girls battled with opponents of equal skill. Cottesmore had more chances to shoot but they were held off by some excellent defending. Cordelia intercepted a number of overhead passes and she sent the ball back down the court swiftly. Playing centre, Mila was a force to be reckoned with in every third and she also played a particularly strong defensive game. She marked closely and jumped high to knock the ball off the court. There is much to work on with this U10 team. Unfortunately, neither Eliza nor Antonia could get free from their opponents and so they found it difficult to get close to the post. Eliza made the best of her opportunities to score but Antonia’s shooting lacked power. The whole team needs to practise dodging and Antonia needs to practise shooting the in higher posts. Emma is a skilled player but she is still growing in confidence. Both Emma and Momoko must try to play a more determined game of netball by chasing and snatching every loose ball. Izzy, Mimi, Cordelia and Flora need to develop the accuracy of their throws and Mila must be careful not to move her feet. A few development points but lots of potential! This afternoon’s match was such fun and the U10 girls equally enjoyed cheering on their friends in the U9 team.   VR

Under 9 Lost 1 – 2
Wow! what an exciting match that was against Cottesmore! The miserable weather forced us to play two games back to back in the Barn which wasn't ideal, but in actual fact I think it made it that little more exciting. The atmosphere was electric, we thank all the supporters for coming to watch. The girls played fantasically, I've never seen them play so well. The end result was a 1-2 loss but Ashdown put up a great fight. It was really nice to see the girls put their practice into play. We were on fire in attack and defence ensuring the ball got down to our goal circle and away from theirs. Jemima made a fabulous intercept that silenced the Barn for a few seconds after smacking it half way across the court leaving her hand feeling 'fuzzy'. Lily, Lexi and Alice made a wonderful attacking trio down the court making it easy to get the ball to Esme in the goal circle. We struggled to get the ball through the hoop, but with more practice I feel we're the future English netball team! I think most will agree it was a very enjoyable match and I hope we can keep up the quality entertainment.  LC

Netball v Cumnor House

Under 9            Lost 0 – 4

                       Won 7 – 1
Today Cumnor House brought an A and B team to Ashdown so we decided to play a triangular. In the first game we played Cumnor B team and, after getting off to a fine start, Ashdown won this match 7-1. It was so pleasing to see the girls putting what we had covered in our training sessions into practice. Jemima stepped into the GD position and did extremely well, cleverly intercepting two of Cumnor's centre passes. Eloise acquitted herself really well on her Ashdown début as WD, always getting into the correct position to take the back line pass from Tabitha. Alice played WA and on receiving the centre passes sent the ball quickly into our attack. Esme and Lexi complemented each other in the shooting circle. Lexi executes great movement as GA and she scored all 7 goals. Lily Moore played centre and she was super. She was always available for her team, attacking and defending, and involved in every passage of play. In the second match we played Cumnor A team and although we lost this match 4-0 it could have been a lot closer if just a few of our many shots had gone in. Cumnor House played each other in the last match and the A team won 4-0. A very enjoyable afternoon of Netball for all involved. JU

Netball v Benenden

1st VII              Lost 15 – 17
The second outing of the term and the first time that I have been able to see the girls in a competitive match this season. The game brought up many things that we need to work on. However it also showed that the team is more than capable of honing these necessary skills in order to become a force to be reckoned with.

Benenden had two very tall girls whom they deployed effectively at each end. Without these two the score would have been quite different. Camilla and Sasha showed enormous drive and determination in defence, they will learn to play very well together as their skills complement each other. Bota, Grace and Aiko played well in centre court, although they are not confident enough of each other and therefore muddled their roles somewhat. When this has been addressed they will be an efficient and deadly group. Ali and Helena played neatly and efficiently and the understanding between them is already good. With a few more solid drives they will prove more than a match to any defence.
'Man' of the match voted by Benenden Bota;  my 'Man' of the match Aiko   PMc

2nd VII              Lost 1 – 9
The 2nds came up against some very strong opposition today. At the end of the first half Benenden were leading 4-0 and so some changes were made. Patricia moved into the GD position and Ai into Centre. This did seem to help and there were some very good passages of play in the 3rd quarter. Lucy managed to score a nice goal with help from Frances in the shooting circle. Charas worked extremely hard in the WA position and was always available for a pass. At the end of the game both teams voted for girl of the match and Benenden choose Annabel Edwards and I most certainly agree with this as she had a super game at GK, making numerous interceptions to break up the Benenden attack and worked really hard to send the ball back into the Ashdown third. The final score was 9-1 to Benenden. JU

Netball v Brighton College

1st VII Lost 19 – 22

This was an excellent result for the 1st VI against a slick Brighton College team. In the opening minutes, Brighton dominated the court as Ashdown were taken aback by the speed of their opponents. Bota and Grace struggled to mark effectively, especially around the edge of the circle, and Brighton scored four goals in quick succession. Luckily, Ashdown woke up and responded with four in return. The rest of the game followed a similiar pattern. Brighton would take the lead and Ashdown would respond. By half way, Brighton led 8-11 and after three quarters, the score stood at 15-16. In the final quarter, Brighton used a number of set-pieces to retain possesion and, as a result, they went on to win the match. There was much to be pleased with this afternoon. Helena and Ali were on fine form in the shooting circle. They made the most of every opportunity and scored with 19 out of 23 shots. Grace showed real stamina against a very energetic centre and she played with determination and accuracy throughout. Well done, girls.  VR

 2nd VII Lost 1 – 18

We went away to Brighton College on Saturday and unfortunately had quite a tough start to the season.  We started off well in the first quarter, however in the second quarter Ashdown started to feel the pressure which led to a lot of the ball being given away over mistakes that the girls are more than capable of controlling. We also struggled in the third quarter, but the game certainly picked up in the last quarter. Annabel and Patricia were a great defence duo allowing hardly any goals to be scored in the last quarter. Claudia was brilliant at getting the ball down to the goal circle, we just need to practice our shooting! Well done to Frances for getting the one and only Ashdown goal of the game!  LC

Netball v Brambletye

Under 11A Won 9 – 8

Very much a game of two halves. In the first quarter Ashdown went into a storming 4-0 lead with Elizabeth and Carmen showing some really strong attacking and shooting skills. Emily and Lucy were also dominating the centre court and I got the feeling this was going to be a comfortable win. However, in the second half we just seemed to lose all concentration and, not for the first time this season, our passing let us down. We would do some good defensive work with some super interceptions, but then the ball was thrown straight back to Brambletye. It was very frustrating to witness as the Brambletye team picked up the loose balls and sent them straight into their attack. By the third quarter the score was just 8-7 to Ashdown. In the last quarter both teams were making mistakes and we just managed to hold on to our lead as we won the game 9-8. Phew! some fitness and concentration work this week I think. JU

Under 11B Lost 7 – 12

How lovely that all of the U11 girls were out playing matches today. Judging by the red faces and smiles at the end of the match the whole team very much enjoyed the experience. In the first half Brambletye went into a 6-2 lead, but this did not reflect the closeness of the match as we were simply not converting our shots into goals. So we moved Hitomi and Eugenia into the shooting circle and this seemed to work much better as the goals then started to come. With Izzy and Phoebe on the wings picking up the loose balls and Annabel's intelligent play in the centre court this team started to gel. Estella and Momoko stood up really well to some tall opposition and played much better in the second half. Brambletye eventually ran out 12-7 winners, but the B team should be very proud of their first performance together. JU

Under 10 Lost 3 – 10 (PMc)

Under 9 Lost 1 – 14 (TM)

Netball v Pennthorpe

Under 11A Lost 7 – 12

Not the start we were looking for, but I can see lots of potential with this group of girls. The first half of the match was very tightly contested and at half time the score was 5-5. Unfortunately in the second half we lost our shape and the passing from most of the girls looked very tired. Pennthorpe seemed to be a lot sharper on the ball and also marked us very closely. However, it was nice to see three new faces in the Ashdown team, Carmen, Eugenia and Phoebe, who acquitted themselves really well. I am looking forward to seeing how all the girls in the 3s progress over the coming weeks as there is certainly no need to panic yet - we have lots more time. The final score was 12-7 to Pennthorpe. JU

Under 10 Lost 4 – 11

This afternoon’s display was most encouraging and the U10/11 girls should be delighted with their first performance of the season. In a fast-paced and energetic match, they held their own and fought hard against strong opponents. In the first two quarters, possession of the ball was equal, but it was in the third quarter that Pennthorpe cemented their lead. In great excitement, the Ashdown girls allowed themselves to crowd the ball in the centre third. Pennthorpe took advantage of the space, passing the ball efficiently down court to score three times in quick succession. With this boost in confidence, Pennthorpe went on to dominate the second half.

This afternoon, Cordelia, Antonia and Mila proved that they can play a mature game of netball. They each play with spirit, tenacity and fierce competitiveness. They made brave interceptions and they scrapped for every loose ball. In her first ever netball match, Emma was outstanding! She is already a key player; intelligent and very quick. She worked efficiently in the centre court and she is a natural sports player. Mimi quickly learned what is expected of a player at wing defence and she listened carefully to the advice of her team mates. Eliza, Momoko and Izzy have each improved remarkably since the Lent term. Eliza has proved to be a skilled shooter, Momoko has become a force to be reckoned with in the circle and Izzy continues to play with determination. They brought experience to the U10 side, especially Eliza who scored two effortless goals in the higher ring. Well done, girls. An exciting term lies ahead. VR

Brambletye Under 13 Netball Versatility Tournament
1st VII  4th

A beautiful afternoon for our swan song! The girls played with enthusiasm and had lots of fun! Unfortunately a couple of the games did not go our way on the team mix and therefore the result. However we played 4 brilliant games to end this auspicious season!  PMc

Netball v Ardingly

2nd VII Lost 16-25 (JU)

3rd VII Won 7-1, Lost 2-7 (LC)

Under 10 Lost 10-11
On a gloriously sunny afternoon, the match against a mixed U10/11 Ardingly team was a nail-biting finish to a fantastic netball season.  The U10 girls fought hard and they ended the term on a high, despite losing by one goal in the final minute.  From the first whistle, the girls played a mature game of netball.  Passing was strong and slick.  Marking was tight.  Shots were on target.  The same could be said for Ardingly, however, and for every Ashdown goal, the opposition scored one too.  To have drawn would have been a fairer result but it was a wonderful afternoon in which every U10 girl represented her school.  Well done, girls.  I have enjoyed every minute of our training and matches!   VR

Under 9 Won 5-2
The girls played so so well!  They worked together as a team and, knowing that it was their last match of the season, they had such fun and were very good sports. The other team gave them a run for their money, but they just couldn’t keep up with how well our U 8/9 girls were playing:  Esme scored 2 amazing goals and Antonia 3. Cordelia also played like a star;  in fact they all did! Congratulations girls on a great match and an amazing end to the season! I am very proud of your 5-2 win. TM

Netball v Cumnor House

1st VII Won 24-20

A truly fitting last match of this incredible season/campaign by these girls. We discussed our tactics before the match - relax and enjoy yourselves. We are an efficient and awesome outfit and this was proved yet again today. At the end of the first quarter we were 6-5 up, at the end of the second quarter we had dropped to 11-12 behind, by the third quarter we were 15-17 behind but still holding on! Here I reiterated our tactic and this seemed to have a superb effect. We came out all guns blazing with smiles on our faces. Cumnor began to panic as we slowly nibbled away their lead and then took the lead ourselves. Girls it has been a pleasure. One last push in the versatility next week! 'Man' of the match The 1st team with Holly and Annabel getting a special mention for the tactical position swap they made.   PMc

2nd VII Lost 11-27

We had a tough game against Cumnor today. The girls didn’t play too badly, they just couldn’t seem to get away from the opposition's strong defence especially in the circle. Cumnor’s GK and GD made it very hard for Ali and Aimee to shoot, forcing them to shoot from the edge of the circle. They found it hard to play well under pressure which was the main issue in this game as they were put under a lot of pressure by the defenders. Aiko played well in WA and tried her best to get the ball into the shooting circle. Even though the girls were being defeated, they didn’t give up and they put up a good fight.  LC

3rd VII Won 18-7

The girls played an amazing match! They all worked very well together and gave their all which resultedf in them winning 18-7. Victoria and Frances had almost every shot at goal in the net and Jenna played like a star as GD. Well done girls: a well deserved win!  TM

Under 11 Lost 11-12

To play in a sports hall is a rare treat. The game today showed how fast and furious netball can be with this match being end to end all the way through. At half time Cumnor were ahead 6-5 and finally ran out winners 12-11. The Cumnor House team voted Georgie O'Brien girl of the match and I have to agree as she made so many interceptions today and managed, mostly, to stay on her feet. JU

Under 10 Won 13-8

Never say never.  The U10 girls approached this match with heavy hearts, having been beaten by Cumnor on previous occasions.  “We are never going to win” they chorused.   They soon changed their minds.  Three goals in quick succession gave Ashdown an early lead.  The girls have never played so well and Cumnor could not keep up!  Passing was strong and accurate.  Once again, the girls made effective use of shoulder passes and overhead passes to move the ball quickly down court.  Elizabeth and Nastya, the ‘dream team’, took complete control of the shooting circle.  By the end of the first quarter, Ashdown led 5-1.  By half time, that lead was extended to 8-2.  Cumnor had a number of opportunities to score but Scarlett’s fantastic marking made life difficult for them.  Her stretching over the ball is rather off-putting!  After a team talk, Cumnor came back strongly.  They marked fiercely and snatched at every loose ball.  In centre court, both Annabel and Emily were skilful in their dodging and equally aggressive.  The second half was tense but Ashdown did not disappoint!  A fantastic effort from all of the girls.  I have never been so proud!  Man of the Match:  The whole team!   VR

Under 9 Lost 0-13

A tough match for the U9 girls.  By half time, they were 11-0 down but this really was a game of two halves! After swapping positions to strengthen the defence, Ashdown made huge improvements.  Cordelia dominated in Cumnor’s shooting circle.  She intercepted almost every pass and used a strong throw to send the ball back down court.  She marked the goal attack with skill and determination.   Izzy, who grafted throughout the match, really benefited from the support.  Momoko’s height was an added bonus in the centre third.  Stretching up, she made some fantastic interceptions too.  Lily, who moved into goal attack, found space and dodged free of her opponent in the circle.  Well done, girls.  A great effort.   VR

Wednesday, 14th March

Netball v Vinehall
1st VII             Won 26-14

The girls played in fits and starts today. On occasions they showed the brilliance that we have grown used to and at other points in the game they were somewhat lacklustre and rather tired looking! The shooting in the first quarter was well below par allowing Vinehall a gentle grip on the game. We came back in the second and third quarters and then dropped to mediocrity for the first half of the fourth. We did however finish with an awesome final five minutes.
'Man' of the match Lily Innes for stepping back into goal defence in superb fashion!   PMc

2nd VII             Won 38-14           (LC)

3rd VII             Lost 0-15

Under 11        Won 24-18

What a fantastic match the U11s played today. Vinehall took an early 2-0 lead but we suddenly woke up and played like demons so that by the end of the first quarter Ashdown was in the lead 8-2. Vinehall was the only team to beat us at Roedean last Thursday and, on remembering that they had an extremely tall GS, I moved Mollie into the defence and Georgie took on the roll as centre. This tactical change worked like a dream. Every girl played to her absolute best today. Nurshahar and Chloe hardly missed a shot and their movement in the shooting circle was excellent. Violet attacked the ball and her feeding into the shooters was spot on. Elena moved up a gear and cleverly executed many a tip off from the centre pass. Georgie was everywhere on the court and her speed of thought and play completely outwitted our opponents today. As mentioned Mollie played GD and was magnificent with her reach and reactions being truly wonderful. Then we come to Liz who had the hardest job in defending against a GS who was 5'8" tall. Liz tucked in so closely to her opponent that it gave her no room to move and therefore the feeding into their GS was very hard for the Vinehall team. A super performance from the U11s as they ran out winners by 24-18 and I was really very proud of them all today so girl of the match can only go to 'the whole team. JU

JU)

Under 10        Won 17-4
The shining sun and warmer weather brought the U10 girls to life this afternoon.  From the first whistle, they stood out as the stronger team and this is reflected in an outstanding final score.  The girls have made some marked improvements to their passing and this was evident today.  With stronger passes, from the shoulder and overhead, the girls are now sending the ball quickly down court.  Elizabeth and Nastya have continued to practise their shooting and they worked together slickly in the attacking third to ensure that Ashdown retained possession.  Ashdown did not lose a single back line or side line pass.  As always, Scarlett made some fantastic interceptions and she was ably supported by Hermione.  Man of the Match: Elizabeth McCarthy.  VR

Under 9          Lost 4-8
The girls played a very good game against the Vinehall team, they passed nicely and their shooting was very good! Congrats to Cordelia Moore who played exceptionally well!   The girls gave the other team a tough fight but Vinehall pulled through and ended up winning 8-4. well done girls, I'm very proud of you.   TM

IAPS National Netball Finals

Under 13            7th

7th in the UK!
v Bishops Stortford 10-2
v Godstowe 7-7
v Bilton Grange 4-9
v Cheam 6-7
v Brighton College 10-5
v Cumnor House 4-7
v Wycliffe 9-6
v Twyford 6-1

4th in section     Goals For 56     Goals Against 44

We began our campaign in startling fashion against Bishops Stortford. I don't think I have ever seen Ashdown girls come out of the blocks in this fashion before. They were slick and efficient.  We were very unlucky not to take the next match as a win, unfortunately drawing to Godstowe who we should have beaten. However in the second half we let our concentration slip and allowed them to catch up with us. Bilton Grange were a very good team (who in fact came third in the tournament) and they beat us quite conclusively as our heads were slightly down after the previous match. This then led to a defeat by Cheam who in normal circumstances these girls would have taken with ease. Sadly there was no time to regroup properly in this set of three matches.

After some confidence building and lunch we returned to the fray with our heads held high. We played magnificently against Brighton, slightly below par to lose to Cumnor and then had two conclusive wins against Wycliffe and Twyford. On another day this could all have gone so differently!

However this small but talented group of girls have covered themselves with glory for many years at Ashdown and in no way should feel bad about their performance. For each 'missed opportunity' they made many interceptions that always kept a win within their grasp. Their goal difference was better than the third place team in their section and almost equal to the second place team in their section. We just needed to share the goals more equally between our matches.  A proud coach and, I am certain, some very proud parents watched from the sidelines as we have done for the last several years which are now sadly drawing to a close.  PMc

Netball v Marlborough House

1st VII Won 24-13
The girls played without their usual flair today as they were in recovery mode after their exertions yesterday. They still played beautiful Ashdown style netball and came away with a well deserved win!
    PMc

2nd VII Drew 11-11
Today was a great game against Marlborough House and, although it was a draw, it was a very fair game. It started to get quite competitive towards the end: as the score was getting closer, you could tell the girls were getting tired but they showed a great, positive attitude. I feel as though the challenge was really good for the girls. Amy and Ali worked well in the circle, the ball flowed in nicely but they struggled to get them all in. Paz did really well at centre standing in for Inju who was unable to play today. Libby made some brilliant interceptions stopping the ball getting into the shooting circle. This was a good result for today’s game.
  LC

3rd VII Lost 4-13
The girls struggled in the first three quarters of the match and the oppostion got a big lead which resulted in morale fading.  However, in the fourth quarter the girls changed the game around scoring 3 goals and not letting the opposition score any! Frances played very well always making sure she was free to receive the ball and Victoria scored an amazing goal 1m from the edge of the circle.  Congratulations to the girls for an impressive game! TM

Under 11 Won 16-11
The U11 team enjoyed another good win today, this time against Marlborough House. It was lovely that Cristina and Estella joined in some of the team's success today by both playing three quarters each and contributing nicely in the GK and WA positions. A good all round team performance with some very nice passages of netball played during the game. JU

Under 10 Won 9-6
The U10 girls at their most feisty! This was an energetic and exhilarating game of netball between two evenly matched teams. Ashdown did very well to secure a victory against such a strong side but, once again, they left it until the last quarter to take the lead! Hermione had her best game of the season. As goalkeeper, she marked closely, reaching high to make interceptions and tip-offs. She was a real pest in the shooting circle and she supported Scarlett brilliantly. Izzy also had an excellent game in wing defence. She has worked hard to develop her skills and to improve her concentration. Today, she proved herself. Well done, girls. Man of the match: Hermione Harrison.
VR

Ardingly U9 Netball Festival
Sadly, grey clouds and driving rain meant that the Ardingly Netball Festival had to be abandoned after only three short games. Nonetheless, the girls had a fantastic morning. After a tough first match against Brighton College, they went on to win against Ardingly and they gave Farlington a very close match. Hot chocolate and muffins did help to cheer up the soggy netballers and all returned to school with smiles.  VR

Play off for 1st to 3rd place
v Cumnor House 8-3
v Cranleigh 5-5
Placing us 1st overall on goal difference by 4 goals in the play-offs.
The girls were amazing today! They had one bad match where they played below par. In all other matches they played brilliantly and are thoroughly deserving of their new title of South East Regional Champions. This is a team who have deserved this accolade for so long and it was a total joy to see their faces when they realised they had achieved their dream of making it through to the National finals! The icing on the cake being the actual winning of the tournament. I am SO PROUD OF YOU ALL! The work has definitely paid off. Now we need to keep it up for next Saturday. It takes a team to score!  PMc

U12 IAPS Netball

Lost 8-3 Holmewood House
Won1-0 Pennthorpe
Lost 5-1 Cumnor House
Lost 5-2 St Bedes
Won 6-4 Copthorne
Drew 3-3 Cottesmore
Lost 6-1 Danes Hill,
A valiant attempt by the U12s on Friday, but they just fell short of qualification for the National Finals. All the girls put in a super effort and never gave up at any time. Their sporting behaviour was impeccable throughout the whole day. A special mention must go to our captain, Ali, as she scored nearly all the goals on the day and absolutely worked her socks off in the centre court. There is still next year girls and with lots of practice on the courts I am sure success will come.  JU

Won 3-2 Sutton Valence
Won 5-2 Tormead
Won 5-0 Barrow Hills
Won 6-0 Felton Fleet
Lost 7-5 Vinehall
Won 7-1 Walthamstow Hall
Won 6-3 Colfs
What a fantastic day this lovely bunch of girls had on Thursday. The sun was shining at Roedean, as were the Ashdown U11s as each and every one of them played above all expectation. They came top of their group and therefore qualified for the National Finals next Saturday back at Roedean. In the play-off matches they beat St Michael's 7-1 to come 7th out of 64 teams in the region which was a wonderful achievement. They were very proud to receive a thoroughly deserved medal and we are all very much looking forward to next weekends finals. JU

Netball v Sevenoaks

1st VII             Lost 16-20
This match was exactly what we needed, a great team to hone all our skills on. This we did managing to keep to a very tight game. Sevenoaks have more than 50 girls to chose from and we have 13 in this age group! Now you are truly ready for this Friday's Regionals - the sky is the limit!     PMc

2nd VII             Lost 6-13
The girls played very well.  Aimee got almost every goal in and Jenna played very well too making it very hard for the opposition to score.   It was a pity that we lost because we played very well! The opposition were a lot bigger than us so they did have an advantage here. Well done girls, I was very proud of you! TM

Under 12        Lost 12-23
Unfortunately we lost to Sevenoaks today. The girls started off well with some good passes down the court and into the circle but, as we got in to the 3rd quarter, we started to deteriorate. The girls started to get frustrated with their efforts which resulted in a lack of enthusiasm towards the end of the game.
   LC

Under 11        Lost 4-19
The first quarter of the match was pretty even with goals flying in at both ends. Unfortunately after this we did not score again for the remainder of the match. We made a lot of mistakes mid-court and we all need to be a lot stronger in the upper body as well as being a little bolder. We were playing against U12s and this showed on some areas of the court where Sevenoaks were a lot stronger physically. However, this was all good experience to play some tough opposition and hopefully we will fare better in the IAPS at Roedean. The final score was 19-4 to Sevenoaks. JU

Netball v Lingfield Notre Dame

1st VII Won 33-6
The girls played slick and efficient netball in today's match. Annabel and Lily played beautifully together in the circle and shot brilliantly. Tilly G, Lily I, Cosi K and Tilly B were awesome in the centre court giving fantastic passes and allowing Lingfield no room for manoeuvre. Katerina and Holly were fabulous in the defending circle making life very tough for Lingfield. 'Man' of the match goes to Katerina for her unbelievable interceptions.  PMc

Wednesday, 8th February

Netball v Handcross Park

2nd VII             Won 15-7
As usual we began very slowly, not using any of our skills in the appropriate fashion! The ball went back and forth like a yoyo. After a few minutes Handcross popped the first goal into the net. Suddenly we came alive and by the close of the first quarter we were 3-1 up. During the second quarter we were electric, scoring 9 goals and conceding none. Therefore, in order to keep the game competitive, I moved the players during the latter two quarters. We really must learn to play from the start of a match!  'Man' of the match Inju Chang   PMc

Under 11         Won 21-4
It was a delight to have the opportunity to see these girls in a match. Chloe was neat and efficient and Mollie was electric in defence. Georgie played superbly when defending, although she must learn to control her play. Nurshahar moved well in the circle, but must learn to keep her arms down until she is free. Elena moved fast and efficiently; Violet kept her player under control and picked up many loose balls and Liz tried really hard to keep with her player in the defending circle. At three quarter time we were 16-2 up so I moved all the players into unfamiliar territory to gain a better insight into other roles.  'Man' of the match Mollie Beale.  PMc

Under 10         Won 11-0
Much turn of speed and quick accurate passing was on display today in the U10s' match. Scarlett made some super interceptions and then quickly sent the ball straight back into the attack. Lucy and Emily totally dominated the centre court, picking up all the loose balls and making each centre pass count. Elizabeth plays the GA position with a maturity beyond her years as she attacks and defends the ball at every opportunity with always a positive outcome. Nastya who plays a very unorthodox GS is extremely effective and scored two amazing goals from the edge of the circle. Estella, Hermione, Annabel and Izzy shared positions and were all equally excellent. The final score was 11-0 to Ashdown. It was a pleasure to take this super team today, keep up the good work girls! JU

Under 9           Won 2-0
The game started off very well with us scoring two very good goals. The match seemed to constantly be in our shooting circle but we struggled to get the goals in. The girls all had such a fantastic game, but Mila Novik played exceptionally well and Jemima Bland also had a very good game! Congratulations to the girls for their determination and hard work. We ended up winning 2-0. TM

Saturday, 4th February

Netball v Holmewood House

2nd VII Lost 15-19
To say that we started slowly and in a somewhat lacklustre fashion would be an understatement! Our dodging lacked purpose, our passing was loopy and behind the receiving player and our defending was a metre off the pace. After the first quarter team talk there was a small improvement, but we were still playing well below par! A brutally frank appraisal of each performance plus two or three key points that would improve each player followed at half time. One strategic player move, a swap of position for Aimee and Alexandra and we began again. The girls were then superb, each making the best of the talk and using her own plan to the best effect. Three quick goals followed and Holmewood were caught totally on the back foot. We managed to pull back to only 3 goals behind in this awesome quarter. Holmewood regrouped at the final break but only enough to keep up with us. The last quarter was therefore a minor loss by one goal. How differently you can play girls when you use your skills and determination to the best effect!  'Man' of the match Aimee de Havas   PMc

3rd VII Lost 3-17
We travelled to Holmewood House today in good spirits but we were unfortunately defeated with a final score of 17-3.

Holmewood fielded a strong side that had a game plan that our girls couldn’t seem to thwart. Jenna made some great intercepts in the goal third but sadly these were thrown away as they travelled down the court. Victoria scored two of the goals leaving Frances to score the other. More effort was needed for more goals to be scored, so plenty to work on before the next match. LC

Under 11 Lost 11-12
Although it was a freezing cold day it did not diminish the amount of effort both teams put into the game. This was an extremely close match that initially saw Holmewood go into a narrow 5-4 lead by half time. Many changes were made to the team throughout the match today to enable me to see how the girls can perform in different positions. The benefit of this experiment was shown in the last quarter as we were at our most impressive and won this quarter 6-2. Chloe and Georgie worked really hard today for a winning result especially in the last quarter. A special mention goes to Liz as she had the difficult task of marking a very strong GS. Holmewood just ran out 12-11 winners although I feel that, with a little more time, Ashdown would have won this match as we finished very strongly.  JU

Under 10 Won 14-9
A wonderful display of netball from the U10 girls secured a victory against Holmewood House. Throughout the game, Ashdown’s strength lay in attack. Lucy has worked hard to develop power behind her throw and today she delivered every centre pass successfully. Despite being marked by two players, Emily dodged free to receive the centre passes. This left Holmewood very frustrated! Emily’s agility was also evident in her fantastic marking of Holmewood’s wing defence. Once again, the communication between Lucy, Emily, Elizabeth and Nastya was key to success. Accurate throwing into space and support on the edge of the circle allowed the shooters to focus on the job at hand. Despite a much improved performance by Ashdown, Holmewood House were in it to win it and the score was very even for the majority the match; 8-7 after three quarters. However, it was in the final quarter that Ashdown really shone! After a rousing team chant, the girls stepped up their speed, aggression and determination. In quick succession, Nastya scored three outstanding goals from the edge of the circle. Ashdown romped to victory and our spectators gasped with admiration! How does she do it?! Men of the Match: Lucy, Emily, Elizabeth and Nastya. These four girls played a mature game of netball.

Goals For 57 Goals against 4

We won our section on a huge goal difference against Ardingly and thus were in the final!  We played Windlesham A in the final and we won that match 9-1 making us convincing winners. The girls behaved beautifully, dealt with the cold and the wind admirably and were a pleasure to accompany.  This was a true squad effort and as such no one person is getting a mention. All performed to the best of their ability and showed total commitment to their team.  PMc

2nd VII 6th
Under 13 Tournament
The girls did brilliantly to make it into the play offs for 6th place yesterday! After playing their hardest in the freezing cold, they managed to win three of their five games resulting in them playing off for either 5th or 6th place. Unfortunately the goals just weren’t going in which led to a loss of 0-3 to Christ’s Hospital A team. The team did really well to beat Worth’s A team 5-2, great efforts from the whole team and the ball just flowed beautifully into the goal circle. The game against Cottesmore was extremely nail biting with a win of 5-4;  without a couple of basic errors we could have scored a couple more! Windlesham’s A team was a strong side and proved their skill in winning 6-1. Although it was a shame to lose, it was a good challenge for the girls. Our last game against Christ’s Hospital was a bit of a shambles as the opposition was continuously contacting and obstructing our team which caused the game to be taken less seriously resulting in the girls slacking off slightly. In saying this, they still won 3-1! All in all it was a great day of netball with both teams playing to the best of their ability. Thanks to the parents for coming and supporting in that bitter weather!   LC

Netball v St Bede’s
Under 11 Lost 16-18

It was such a treat to play in a sports hall, especially on a freezing cold day like today. We played a very closely fought first half with the pace extremely fast and both teams scoring alternately. However, Ashdown managed to get just one goal ahead at half time by scoring 9 goals to 8. In the second half the pace slowed slightly, but again the teams were very evenly balanced. Unfortunately in the last quarter a couple of mistakes, and the constant battle with the St Bede's extremely tall GA, let St Bede's gain the advantage and go on to win 18-16. Girl of the match today goes to Georgie O'Brien who marked the St Bede's 5'9" GA and did a truly fantastic job. So much so, that the St Bede's teacher congratulated her on how well she performed such a difficult task. JU

Under 9 Lost 4-9
The little U8 and 9s played a very good match! They had some tough competition considering that the other team was about double their size. The first half was dominated by St Bede's but then Ashdown picked up and ended up scoring a lot more goals! They played their hearts out and had a lot of fun! Lily Moore was player of the match. Well done Lily. TM

Netball v Burgess Hill and Cottesmore
v  Burgess Hill  Lost 2-15

v  Cottesmore
   Won 8-3

The U10 girls were desperately disappointed to find out that the Cumnor House netball tournament had been cancelled due to bad weather. Luckily, Mr Hogue and Mrs McCarthy managed to arrange two last minute matches.

The first match was tough. In truth, Burgess Hill was the stronger team in every respect. In the first half, the U10 girls were let down by poor marking, careless passing and jolly bad luck in the shooting circle. The girls found it impossible to intercept Burgess Hill’s strong and accurate passes having allowed their opposition to break free. Elizabeth and Nastya found it very difficult to keep possession of the ball in the attacking third, as they were marked by aggressive defenders. A fair score. Well done to Cordelia who joined the team from the U9s. She was invaluable as goalkeeper; a real asset to the team.

The second match was more even but, despite a pleasing result, Ashdown still didn’t play their best! There were moments of excellent netball, particularly the communication between Lucy, Emily and Elizabeth in the centre third. These girls communicate subtly on the court and they understand each other. Ashdown showed greater determination against Cottesmore. They snatched, scrapped for loose balls and lifted off the ground to intercept.

Netball v St Bede’s
1st VII             Won 36-2
The ball flowed beautifully and the interceptions were fast and efficient. Every girl had a turn in the shooting and defending circles, fine tuning their circle play. There was no muddling in the centre court even though it had different players each quarter. An exhibition match!  PMc

2nd VII             Won 25-17

It was a very close game between Ashdown and St Bede's up until the second half when Ashdown managed to pull away, making it harder for St Bede's to close the gap. Their defence was strong in the third and fourth quarter which was a contributing factor to their lead.
The girls all put in their best efforts throughout the game making it a deserved win!  LC

3rd VII             Lost 1-7
The third team struggled a bit on the slippery courts but managed to keep up with the other team. There were a lot of errors made but they were then told what they were doing wrong so that they could improve. They ended up losing 7-1 to St Bede's. Congratulations to Paz and Charas for their focus and skill during the match. TM

Netball v Great Walstead
Under 11         Won 17-7

With a good warm up under their belts, the U11s got off to a flying start and by the end of the first quarter they were 7-0 ahead. To be fair to Great Walstead they have only started playing netball this term and looked a little rusty. We made a few positional changes and Great Walstead had a much better second quarter so, by half time, the score was 9-4. In the second half it was interesting to see the girls get to grips with their new positions. Elena tried the centre position and really gained some confidence. Cristina enjoyed playing WA for two quarters and her spacial awareness was very good indeed. Violet scored a lovely goal as GS. Nurshahar came out onto the centre court to play GA and relished the freedom to run around. In the last quarter Great Walstead suffered a thumb nail injury and as they didn't have a reserve Seoyeon stepped into the GK position for them and did a sterling job. An extra cheer was included at full time for Seoyeon and we all agreed that she was girl of the match today. Ashdown won the game 17-7. A lovely game played in a very sporting manner.

Netball v Copthorne
Under 10          Lost 8-27

This score reflects the strength of Copthorne’s U10 team but, rather than focusing on the result, there are some positives that we can take away from the U10 performance this afternoon.  This match was great for building stamina.  The girls were exhausted after the forty minutes - some complained of aches and pains, others of feeling unwell – but exhaustion is to be expected when playing against such energetic, strong and determined opponents.  It was good preparation for the exhaustion they will experience after playing at least three matches in next week’s tournament.   This match was also a lesson in perseverance.  Ashdown improved every quarter and they played their best in the final ten minutes; drawing that quarter 3-3.   Man of the Match: Scarlett Fox for her interceptions and tip-offs which slowed the pace of the game. Netball v Cottesmore
1st VII Won 21-6
The girls began rather slowly in this match making some basic errors. They hit their stride in the last five minutes of the first quarter and then popped in 7 quick goals. To hone some specific skills, I moved them out of their comfort zone for the next two quarters. This produced some marked improvements in play, but goals were not forthcoming. In the last quarter we went back to the more standard format and played really well. However some shooting practice is very necessary over the next few weeks!  'Man of the Match' Lily Innes for sharp passing and good dodging.  PMc

2nd VII Lost 11-12
The girls had a great start to the first quarter winning 4-1. Cottesmore then started to pick their pace and levelled the score at half time. The girls were a bit shocked at how fast the game was played by Cottesmore and picked up their speed too. This resulted in a few handling errors and foot faults. The shooting was very accurate by Alexandra Mathison and Libby Galloway. Alexandra was named “man of the match.” The girls played an amazing game but ended up losing 11-12. TM

3rd VII Won  5-3
We played on a covered area called The Gravel. The teams were fairly evenly matched. We scored first; they equalised – and that became the format. We ran well off the ball, creating space for the passes to come. Particularly impressive were Ai Yokoyama’s work-rate and Annabel Edwards’ reading of the game. All the players showed determination and skill, which resulted in a pleasing and entertaining win.  EG

Under 11 Won 11-4
The first half was riddled with mistakes from both teams which made goals scarce whilst accurate passing was nowhere to be seen. By half time Ashdown were just ahead by two goals to one but the third quarter belonged to Cottesmore as they came back strongly. However, in the last quarter Ashdown suddenly came to life and all the girls started to play really well. Molllie dominated the centre court whilst Chloe held off her opponent and created plenty of space for some lovely attacking moves. There was much individual improvement such as Tori cleverly intercepting a centre pass and then sending the ball back down to the Ashdown attacking end and Nursharhar catching all the fast balls thrown into the circle and converting them into goals. So Ashdown eventually ran out comfortable 11-4 winners. But the lesson learnt from today is that we must warm up at least 30 minutes before a match. JU

Under 10 Won 10-2
The under 10s had a terrific win against Cottesmore on Saturday with a result of 10-2.Elizabeth was incredible at attack scoring nine of the ten goals with the help of some great feeding into the circle by Emily and Nastia. The first quarter was a little rocky with the footwork but once they found their feet they were set for the win. Annabel picked up some great interceptions throughout the game which made up for the occasional runaway balls that the girls couldn’t seem to chase after. Most centre passes began with a nice pass from Lucy which created a good flow down the court to the goal circle resulting in victory. Well done girls!  LC

Netball v St Andrew’s

1st VII            Won 18-3
The team was altered today to utilise the skills of the girls in the best combination due to Lily St John's absence. Holly played goal shooter brilliantly and was a very accurate shot. Annabel moved out to goal attack which she played with drive and enthusiasm. Tilly G stayed at wing attack, a position she has mastered beautifully. Lily I played centre using her speed to its best advantage and playing her very best match of the season today. She defended beautifully, was always free and passed accurately and with great pace into the circle. Tilly B played a fantastic wing defence, always free and a great steadying influence. Katerina was awesome at goal defence as always and Cosima took to the position of goal keeper, immediately making her mark. She used her great intelligence to outwit her opponent at every turn. We were 12-3 up at three quarter time so we had another few moves to confuse the opposition in the last quarter. Here we put Tilly B to goal keeper, Annabel to goal defence, Cosima to wing defence and Katerina to goal attack. The opposition found these changes difficult to cope with giving us a 5-0 victory in that quarter. 'Man' of the match Cosima Keen and Holly Allen  PMc

2nd VII            Won 19-12
Some excellent netball was on display today with both teams executing some wonderful passages of play. St Andrew's had a narrow one goal lead in the first quarter, but by half time the score was eight all. I felt fresh legs in the centre court area would help strengthen our all round play so I moved Aimee from shooter into GA and Geogie HS from GK into the GD position which seemed to work better. With all the girls putting in their best effort the team started to pull away from St Andrew's. Aimee, who was girl of the match today, sent some stunning balls to Alexandra and then collected the return pass to shoot some beautiful goals. Libby and Georgie worked so hard in the defence and truly played a big part in the team's sucess today.
JU

Under 11         Won 13-4
The U11s got off to a flying start today and went into a 3-1 lead in the first quarter. As a team the U11s work very hard for each other and when mistakes are made they rectify them very quickly. Mollie, who was girl of the match, has the most amazing long reach and picks many a ball out of the air. Chloe and Nurshahar are anticipating each other so well in the circle now, which makes the shooting strong. I was very proud of Liz today as she played GK for the first time and was extremely effective in that position. Violet, Elena, Georgie and Tori all added to our solid team performance today. Ashdown went on to win the match 13-4. JU

Under 10        Won 15-3
A comfortable win to start the term.  In lessons this week, we practised turning quickly on receiving the ball and throwing accurately, to the hands rather than the knees!  The girls put this into practice today and they were able to send the ball into the shooting circle with only three or four passes.  Setting a quick pace, St Andrew’s struggled to keep up.  After eight minutes, Ashdown led 5-1 and after sixteen minutes, this lead was extended to 11-1.  At half time, we took the opportunity to swap positions.  This kept the girls on their toes! Momoko learned the importance of maintaining concentration, as she moved into wing defence.  Nastia learned not to stray too far up the court, as she moved from goal shooter to goal attack.  Emily was reminded of the high energy levels that are required in the centre position.  A worthwhile experience for all of the girls and a very strong result.  Man of the match: Elizabeth McCarthy.
  VR

Under 9          Won 3-1
All these girls played extremely well in this match. So well that I had to move them several times in order to keep the score line to a sensible level. Antonia played goal attack, goal shooter and centre all with drive and purpose. Esme played goal shooter, goal attack and goal keeper putting her all into every position. Lily played wing attack, centre, goal defence and goal attack, She put her mark on each position that she played. Mila played centre, goal attack and goal defence and really stepped up her understanding of the game as a whole during the course of this match. Jemima played wing defence and wing attack and fought for every ball and got free beautifully. Izzy played goal defence, goal keeper, centre and goal shooter, she really showed her versatility and understanding of the game during this match. Tabitha played goal keeper, wing defence and wing attack and always made sure that she was near her opponent when we were defending. Eliza played goal defence, goal shooter and wing defence in her neat and determined fashion. It must be noted here just how tough it is at this age to play four quarters in different positions and how proud I am of each girl that they got on with their different jobs with no fuss or nerves. True versatility in the making! 'Man' of the match the whole squad   PMc

Netball v Worth

1st VII            Won 23-7

The girls were really up for the game today. They were beautifully dressed in a Christmas present from the Hickson family- a brand new set of reversible bibs. We definitely did these bibs proud on their first outing! We began in our usual positions with super sub Tilly chomping at the bit.  At the end of the first quarter we were up 8-1. The decision was made to play each girl in four different positions after a few minutes thus keeping the game alive for all concerned. All played superbly in their alternative positions. Holly was electric wherever she played; Tilly G was neat and precise in each of her positions; Katerina defended fantastically well in whichever position she found herself; Annabel was equally fearless in attack and defence; Lily St.J played with calm assurance at all positions; Lily I passed with total accuracy at all times; Tilly B was alert and dodged superbly to get free at all times; and Cosima was a force to be reckoned with at each new position. Superb versatility was shown by all concerned. Worth had one super player, Mollie Cummins, who tested each of her opposition but we were never found to be lacking! 'Man' of the match Katerina Mathison.  PMc

2nd VII            Won 28-5

Considering this bunch of girls have never played together before they did very well as a team. In the shooting circle, Aimee and Alexandra, our shooters, worked extremely well together. Notably, Aimee shot a super goal from the very edge of the circle. Mollie and Georgie O'Brien were outstanding in the centre third where they linked up our attacks and made numerous interceptions. In defence Libby and Georgie Higson-Smith were completely in charge and made life very difficult for the Worth attack. Lastly Camilla, who has returned from France with a real spring in her step, impressively intercepted at least ten centre passes during the match. At half time, as Ashdown were 18-3 ahead, the girls were all changed to new positions. Libby, Mollie and Georgie O'B all enjoyed scoring some goals. Aimee and Alexandra s Apply howed that they are complete netball players by playing absolutely brilliantly in defence. Camilla did herself proud in the Centre and now appreciates how hard it is to play this position. The end result was 28-5 to Ashdown. A special mention must go to the Worth team who never gave up. Girl of the match today goes to the whole team for a really super performance. Well done. JU

3rd VII            Lost 12-17

Considering that the 2s' girls have just returned from Sauveterre, this was a pleasing result.  The scores at the end of each quarter show that it was a very even match until Worth romped to victory in the final ten minutes; 2-4, 8-7, 10 -11 and 12-17.  There was some encouraging netball on display.  As centre, Inju made fantastic interceptions; making the most of her height, she extended her arms, hands and fingers in an effort to snatch the ball.  As goal defence, Jenna also worked hard to disrupt the passage of play.  She made some fearless tip-offs and she left her opponent frustrated.  Chloe, who usually plays for the U11 team, really stepped up to the mark.  She was marked aggressively throughout the match, but she used her tactical awareness to dodge her goal defence.  Frances’ shooting helped Ashdown to take the lead at half time.  Well done, girls.  A promising start to the term. Netball v Roedean
1st VII Won 21-11
This was a really good game to round off the term. In the first quarter Roedean played well and utilised their height to great advantage, particularly in the shooting circle. Aimee played very well at goal keeper but was considerably shorter than her opponent. Lily St John was a little lost at goal shooter and we therefore muddled at the front. Lily Innes started slowly, finding her feet at centre. We lost that quarter 3-5.

A few tactical position changes were made for the second quarter and these worked like a dream. Annabel's tenacity and height were required in defence and therefore she went to goal keeper, Lily St John was clearly more at home at goal attack and Aimee went in as goal shooter. Lily Innes had truly got the hang of centre so she remained where she was allowing Katerina to stay at goal defence where she was doing a fantastic job. We took the second quarter 7-0.

Tilly B and Tilly G both had the games of their lives on the wing today and it was their sense, ability to get free and calming influence that really shone through every quarter. We relaxed a little in the third quarter and allowed Roedean a bit too much space, thus that quarter was drawn.  Everyone stepped up their game in the last quarter which was won in blistering fashion 7-2.  A fabulous match all round!  'Man' of the Match Annabel Hickson for her fantastic defence.   PMc

2nd VII Lost 7-19

The 2nd team played their last match of the term against Roedean. Whilst the score may not reflect their efforts, all of our girls put in an enormous amount of effort and, with a few of our players away at Glyndebourne, there were a few fresh faces on the team. Our girls showed their flexibility on the netball court as they took on positions they may not have usually played- Libby was a great example of this, swapping from her usual position of GK to GS. Bota and Sasha worked hard together to keep the ball down our end of the court as much as possible. Georgie played an awesome game, as did Paz. I have had an absolutely great time coaching the seconds this term, I will miss you all next year but I have every expectation that you will be a very successful team in terms to come. Thanks very much to all the support from my co-coach Kristie McDonald; without her the season would have been very different. Keep on fighting girls!  EH

Netball v Cottesmore
Under 11 Drew 4-4 (JU)

Under 10 Drew 3-3
H
aving waited 30 minutes to play their game, the U10 girls had turned blue by the time they stepped on to the court. This definitely affected their concentration as there was some messy netball on display, especially in the first half. We beat Cottesmore very easily last week but, this week, they managed to hold their own. Careless passing in our attacking third gave the shooters little possession of the ball. Frozen fingers made it all the more difficult for Elizabeth and Nastia when they did have a chance to score. Our defence was fair but the marking could have been tighter. On a positive note, Scarlett had another excellent game. She has a real presence on the court. Her passes were accurate and she made many interceptions. Lucy also played well. She scraps for every ball and then takes her time to find an available person to pass to. Her cool head allows her to make the most of every opportunity. Well done, girls. You have improved remarkably this term and I am very much looking forward to the next! VR

Under 9 Won 3-1
What a wonderful match the end the term.  All of the U9 girls worked very hard against a strong Cottesmore side but, in the end, it was Antonia’s excellent shooting that secured a victory.   Cottesmore dominated in the first half; they towered over our teeny U8s and so the girls found it very difficult to get free.  By the second half, the girls made more effective use of bounce passes to solve this problem.  Lily was particularly successful.  Cordelia, Tabitha and Eliza provided a strong defence.  Tabitha has grown in confidence.  She made some accurate back line passes and marked the ball beautifully.   Well done, girls! You will surely have further victories next term.  VR

Netball v Hawthorns
1st VII           Won 17-7
Two of the squad were missing today, so Aimee kindly moved into the team for the match. During the first innings we played in one of the best formats for the seven girls who were playing. They were superb in these positions taking the first quarter 6-0. In order to make this a very worthwhile match for all concerned I then decided that each girl was going to play 4 different positions during the match. With this in mind I moved them to the next best format for the following quarter. Holly was superb at goal shooter, Katerina electric as goal attack, Aimee played a very convincing goal keeper and Annabel was efficient and lively in centre. We took this quarter 6-2. In the next quarter I again moved every person, but this time mainly out of their comfort zone, in this quarter Tilly Butcher was fabulous at goal shooter, we drew 4-4. In the last quarter we were again very much out of position, Lily Innes played a very efficient goal attack and Cosima a superb goal defence, although the goals were not flowing freely for us we won this one 2-1.  Overall a really good versatility practice!  PMc

Netball v Holmewood House
2nd VII           Lost 4-14
With a few of our girls missing, Jenna and Paz stepped up to help us out and both girls played a tremendous game. There was some great defence from Libby, but I encourage our girls to get a little bit more competitive when reaching for the rebounds. Helena made some great shots from a good distance away from the hoop but, without her shooting buddy, Grace, it was difficult to even up the scores. I’m looking forward to the girls moving onward and upwards!  EH

Under 11      Lost 11-13

For most of this game Ashdown were narrowly ahead. The team was playing extremely well. Our passing and marking were spot on and our shooters Chloe and Nurshahar converted most of the shots that came their way. Mollie and Elena put some very nice attacking moves together and Georgie, as we have now become to expect, made numerous outstanding interceptions. Unfortunately, in the last quarter we lost some of our momentum as Holmewood stepped up their game to edge ahead at the most critical time to win 13-11. We shouldn't be too disappointed with the final result as we played ever so well for three quarters of the matchJU

Under 10      Lost 5-6
With five more seconds on the clock, this would certainly have been a draw.  Elizabeth was poised to shoot; feet in position, the ball held high in the air, a perfect distance from the net… when the whistle was blown.  How disappointing.

A 5-5 score would have been a more accurate reflection of this match.  The two teams were very evenly matched.  In the first quarter, Holmewood went 2-0 up.  Some careless passing in our attacking third, mostly due to chilly fingers, allowed Holmewood a chance to intercept.  By the second quarter, Ashdown were back on form.  Scarlett, in goal defence, played her best game of the season.  She found spaces, intercepted the ball and snatched every rebound.  She was the best player on the court.  Cordelia, who joined us from the U9 team, played brilliantly too.  She really stepped up to the faster pace and more aggressive play.  Once again, Elizabeth and Nastia worked well together in the shooting circle, despite being marked closely by two feisty and skilled defenders.  Holmewood’s umpire commented on Nastia’s ability; a huge compliment! However, ‘Man of the Match’ has to go to Scarlett Fox.  It was her performance this afternoon that kept us in the game.  VR

Under 9        Lost 0-12
We always knew it would be a challenge going up against Homewood House as their under 9 team is quite skilled. In addition to this, due to a lot of our under 9 players being unwell, we were forced to play a mixed team which created some difficulties on the court. We lost 12 nil although the score was not a reflection of how the girls played. It was good to see all the girls getting their hands on the ball and trying their best. With more practice I have no doubt that we will be a better opponent for teams like Homewood. OH

Netball v Cottesmore

Saturday, November 3rd

1st VII Won 32 -12

At last the squad of 8 girls all present for a match! As we were a little out of match practice the first two quarters were spent getting to grips with the run of play. This they did efficiently. Once we were back in the zone these talented girls began to play to my expectations; superbly. A wonderful team effort!   PMc

2nd VII Won 12-5

The 2nd netball team played an excellent match this afternoon against Cottesmore with a final winning score of 12-5. Once more the girls played really well as a team and every girl’s participation was integral to the win. In this match our girls changed around positions demonstrating the variety of their skills - special mention to Grace who very successfully played WD, WA and GA. There was some great shooting from Aimee and Helena whilst Bota’s attack and defence as centre was very impressive. With the girls improving every week it’s no surprise we have another victory this week!  EH

3rd VII Lost 8-9

Today’s match against Cottesmore was a very even one.  The girls played fabulously but unfortunately Cottesmore managed to pull away in the third quarter leaving the score at a close 9-8.

Throughout the game we had Lucy, Victoria, Ellie and Claudia in the circle. They all did really well and all managed to score at least one goal. Paz did an amazing job as centre… always switched on and ready for the ball. Issy and Kate did a good job as defence in the circle although they need to work on getting their hands up and jumping for the ball. Jenna played goal defence and managed to get many intercepts. Alex played as wing defence for the majority of the game where she did a very good job however she needs to call for the ball more.

OH

Under 11 Won 18-6

With nobody in sick bay this week all the the 3s were really looking forward to the match today as they all got an opportunity to play. The first half was a very even affair which saw Ashdown take a narrow 6-5 lead by half time. Elena, Seoyeon and Cristina shared the WA and WD positions and they all did really well, seeming to relish playing as part of the U11 team. In the second half Ashdown took control of the match and with the help of Georgie's superb interceptions and Mollies all round court play Ashdown went into a commanding 11-5 lead. In the last quarter the girls really put on a super display of Netball where Nurshahar and Chloe's close passing and shooting in the circle was particularly outstanding. The final score was 18-6 which was another good win for the U11 team. Keep up the great work girls!  JU

Under 10 Won 15-3
What a wonderful display! A strong team performance produced some solid, skilled netball against Cottesmore. Every U10 girl played in a match and they enjoyed sharing in this sweet victory. From the first centre pass, Ashdown were dominant. Powerful and accurate passes into space, clear signalling and secure footwork helped Ashdown to go 7-1 up in ten minutes. On losing the ball, Ashdown were quick to regain possession with some fantastic interceptions by Momoko, Annabel and Scarlett. The second quarter was horribly sloppy but by the third quarter Lucy slowed the pace of the game. It was fantastic to see her taking control in the Centre position. In the final quarter, Izzy moved into Wing Attack to give a much needed energy boost. Her skills have improved remarkably. The shooters were certainly on target this afternoon. Elizabeth and Nastia work brilliantly together. With their slick passing in the circle, subtle communication and aggressive approach, they are a force to be reckoned with! Nastia played her best game yet. She is a naturally gifted shooter and her skills are tight, even when she’s under pressure. Man of the match: Nastia Nikolaeva  VR

Under 9 Lost 3-11

The huge improvements that the Under 9 team are making were made clear in today’s match against Cottesmore. With a team consisting of Esme, Antonia, Lily, Mila, Jemima, Eliza, Cordelia and Tabitha, the girls were in high spirits from beginning to end; even though they lost. I am so proud to report that the Ashdown girls were not pulled up once on footwork, and their chest and bounce passes were exemplary. A special mention must be given to Cordelia, whose speed on the court meant that free passes never went amiss and her defending in the shooting circle helped to prevent many more Cottesmore goals. Our goals today were shot by Esme and Antonia, and both girls should be very proud of their efforts. Lily’s constant determination to get the ball was once again clear on the court, as she ran around; diving into any open space she saw to help her team. Jemima, Eliza and Tabitha shared the WD and GK positions, and their defence was exceptional; they have all improved dramatically since our first training session. Centre position was filled by Mila for the duration of the game, and this alone is highly commendable as anyone who has seen a netball match can comment on the energy and speed needed for this position. A big thank you must be given to all of the parents, brothers and sisters who came to the match today; our support crowd was a great morale booster for the girls. Thank you and well done girls! Netball v Rose Hill
Under 11 Won 23-11
The U11s were back to their winning ways today as they got off to a flying start by going 9-2 up in the first quarter. It seemed that Nurshahar and Chloe could not miss from the shooting circle. Their quick inter-passing meant that they made shooting far easier for each other by being able to shoot from close range. Mollie totally controlled the centre third with superb support from Elena and Violet. We were missing Tori today but Estella was a fine replacement GK and did a sterling job. Georgie has a strong presence on court and played the position of GD to an extremely high standard, making so many interceptions. Positions were changed around for the two middle quarters to allow for a more even match. All the girls did well in their unfamiliar positions. Georgie told me that she cannot shoot and then scored two long range shots. Nursharhar and Chloe took up defensive roles and did rather well. Violet played centre for a quarter and stepped up to the new challenge. Ashdown eventually ran out 23-11 winners. Well played the whole team. JU

Under 10 Won 17-11
A fantastic result for Ashdown but, after twenty minutes, it seemed as if this game could go either way. The U10 girls have a terrible habit of letting their opposition set and control the pace of play. In allowing Rose Hill to set a slow tempo, the girls lost their aggression early on. The first half was very ladylike. “Please, after you” said the girls. This attitude was reflected in the score: 1-0, 1-1, 2-1, 2-2, 3-2, 3-3, 3-4, 4-4, 5-4, 5-5, 5-6. Worryingly, Ashdown were 5-6 down at half time.

After refreshing oranges, some stern words and a rousing team chant, Ashdown found their inner feistiness. Phew. Our captain, Lucy, led by example. Throughout the game, her centre passes were faultless. She moved quickly around the court, finding spaces and signally clearly for the ball. She held the whole game together, just as a centre should. Annabel made some fantastic interceptions, Emily continued to send gentle and accurate passes into the shooting circle and Elizabeth’s determination made sure that, on losing the ball, Ashdown were quick to regain possession. Some beautiful goals were scored by both Elizabeth and Nastia. Earlier in the term, Nastia would allow Elizabeth to take the majority of shots but now she is prominent in the circle, scoring at least half. Well done, girls! You worked very hard to turn this game around. Brilliant! Man of the Match: Lucy Hargrave   VR

Netball v St Ronan’s
1st VII Won 24-7

A really good game was played by all the girls this afternoon. The passing was hard, fast and accurate. The dodging had purpose and direction. The marking was tight and athletic. ‘Man’ of the match the entire team! PM

2nd VII Won 12-11
The team played an excellent game against St Ronan's today, winning 12-11. All our girls really stepped up to the competition and as a result we came out of the game victorious. Our defenders, Georgie and Libby put in extra effort which ensured the opposing team had limited possession of the ball. Our key players were Bota and Sasha whose attacking and defending was very impressive, letting very few balls past them. The girls all listened really carefully to my advice and I was very happy with them all. I can't wait for our next game! EH
Under 11 Lost 10-16
The first half of this match seemed to pass by very quickly without too much incident of note except to report that we found ourselves 3-8 down. St Ronan's were a strong physical team and we needed to be much more purposefulness and alert to their quick passing. The second half we fared a little better. Mollie and Georgie became a lot more animated and this spurred the rest of the girls on. The eventual score was 16-10 to St Ronan's which I felt was a fair result. Maybe the long journey didn't help the Ashdown team as most of the girls seemed very sleepy, especially in the first half. I am sure next week they will be back to their winning ways. JU
Under 10 Lost 9-12
This was a disappointing result as Ashdown outplayed the opposition. Facing St Ronan's U11B team, the U10s suffered from a lack of height in a very physical match against older girls. It was a messy game. In marking, Ashdown were drawn too close to the ball. This overcrowding led to careless passing and confusion. As captain, Emily tried to encourage spacing out and this did improve the flow of the ball. Unfortunately, Elizabeth, one of our key players, felt terribly unwell but she battled on. Her interceptions in the centre third were superb and she was able to rely on Nastia for support in the shooting circle. Nastia is becoming a fantastic shooter. She is quick to run to the post but she finds it remarkably easy to shoot from a distance. She fought hard against a towering opponent and she was indispensable in today's match. Estella played GK for one quarter and she made a real difference to the defence. She snatched every rebound and passed accurately to Scarlett. A good effort from the U10s, especially after such a long and tiring walk on Friday. Man of the Match: Nastia Nikolaeva VR

Netball v St Bede’s
Under 9/8 Won 5-0
What an excellent team the U9s are becoming as they play with an infectious enthusiasm and are always quick to encourage each other. By half time Ashdown were leading 2-0 with a goal apiece from Esme and Antonia backed up by outstanding defensive play from Cordelia, Tabitha and Momoko ensuring that St Bedes found it very difficult to establish any attacking play. Mila and Lily consistently showed speed and very skilful passing in and around the shooting circle. Jemima had her best game to date, picking up numerous loose balls and in particular her determination to intercept the ball from the centre pass was superb. Ashdown won the match 5-0 and girl of the match today goes to Antonia for her defensive play from the back line and for shooting four of our goals. JU

Netball v Benenden
1st VII Lost 8-14 (

Our first ever 1st Netball team match in The Barn, this was a super event as the barn sparkled with its lovely new paintwork and lights. The only slight downside to the event was the archery curtains wire which protruded two feet across one end of the court. However in true Ashdown fashion we slightly amended the rules to suit the situation and off we went.

The Benenden girls were taller than us, which was only to be expected and this gave us a few tactical problems. However during the match the girls worked on alternative forms of defence to counteract this.

We were 2-3 down at the end of the first quarter, which was a great result.  We lost the second, third and fourth quarters by a two goal margin.

Everyone really gained from this experience, in particular Cosima and Lily Innes who played intelligently throughout.

v Cumnor U12 Won 9-1
v Worth Won 6-1
v Cumnor U13 Lost 3-4
v Roedean Won 5-1
v Windlesham Won 3-1

v Brighton Prep Won 8-4
Squad: Annabel Hickson, Tilly Grace, Katerina Mathison, Tilly Butcher, Lily Innes, Holly Allen, Aimee deHavas and making her debut for the first team (in a baptism of fire) Libby Galloway
A really great day of competition hosted by Cumnor. Due to Lily St.John being injured and Cosima Keen playing chess we were able to welcome back Aimee and give Libby her first taste of 1st team netball. In the first match we were on the back foot from the off and Cottesmore certainly capitalised on this to their credit. The girls' heads were down by the end of this 1-3 loss. After a short sharp talk they received their new positions and came back fighting! They continued to do this for the remainder of the tournament. They were unlucky to lose a really hard fought match against Cumnor 1st team by the narrowest 1 goal margin! The rest of the matches were won with reasonable ease.
Lovely surprises of the day came in abundance: Holly played quite brilliantly as goal shooter, Lily attacked and positioned herself superbly in the attacking circle, Tilly Butcher played goal keeper as if her life depended on it, Tilly Grace shot accurately and her passes were also stunning in their accuracy, Aimee made superb tip offs in the centre court, Libby learned something new every game and found superb space off the ball, Annabel and Katerina were fantastic at every position they attempted, I am not certain if Katerina actually missed a shot!
The eventual winners were Cumnor, with Ashdown in second place, Windlesham third and Brighton prep fourth. A great day out with a lovely group of girls who played eight consecutive matches for two hours with only five minutes between matches. A superb testament to their overall fitness as they looked as fresh and ready for action at the end as they had done before they started (or perhaps even more so than their very first game!). 'Man' Of the Match has to be shared between Katerina and Annabel, but it really was an all team effort! PMc
Netball v Roedean
2nd VII Lost 10-12
The girls played an excellent match today against Rodean, only just letting the win slip away in the last quarter with a final score of 12 to 10. Throughout the entire game our girls showed a real passion for the game and, despite being a few years younger and significantly smaller than their opponents, they all played incredibly well. Paz played brilliantly with countless intercepts and very little footwork, very impressive for only her third game. There was some great shooting from both Helena and Grace even though their defenders towered over them. Bota and Sasha darted in and out of their opposition receiving countless balls and quickly sending them down to our shooting circle. It was a very competitive game and as always the girls were a real pleasure to coach. EH

Under 11 Won 13-4
Today the U11s had a tough challenge as they were asked to play Roedean's U12B team. The first half was a very even affair, if a little untidy, as both teams made plenty of passing errors. At half time our team talk focussed on reminding the girls what we had been practising in training this week, which was that we must pass into space. This was even more crucial with the older opposition being that much taller than our girls. It was so pleasing to see that all the girls took this on board and started to play so much better. Tori, picking up a loose ball, sent a beautiful pass into Georgies' space, who then sent a very long pass on to Violet, who in turn, accurately fed the ball into Nurshahar under the post. GOAL! This was then repeated over and over again throughout the half. Molllie and Chloe were moving and passing at speed but continued to maintain their passing accuracy. Claudia, who joined the team today, had the tallest opponent but still managed to out jump her and grab the ball on many occasions. The second half of this match was the best that I have seen the U11s play this season and they deservedly went on to win the match 13-4. Girl of the match today goes to 'the whole team' for their magnificent performance. JU

Netball v Brambletye

U11 Netball v Brambletye
Our fabulous winning streak finally came to an end. Brambletye capitalised on Ashdowns very slow start and went into a 5-1 lead in the first quarter. Although we fought back and drew the second quarter, Brambletye were still ahead 7-3 at half time. Our main problem today was the passing of the ball. Many interceptions were made by all the team and then the ball seemed to go straight back to the opposition. The girls tried really hard and this was, on the whole, a very even match which was confirmed by the two teams drawing another quarter. However, in the final quarter Brambletye played some very nice netball indeed as they went on to win the match 15-8. Although a loss for the U11s, I feel they all gained some valuable experience today. JU

Under 10 Won 7-3
The girls really started as they meant to go on. In general the passing was quite slick and the dodging had purpose. They were all there to help out in any minor crisis, although it could be said that this led to a little too much bunching.

Hermione played her best game ever, really looking to make interceptions and attempting to snatch the ball. Scarlett had a superb game making fantastic interceptions, although we do need to work on her delivery of the ball. Annabel was neat and very efficient, no loose ball was safe when she was around. Lucy played superbly, she needs to work on her positioning off the ball as she has a tendency to muddle others by going regularly for the return pass when she needs to leave space for them. Emily was fabulous making many interceptions and passing the ball well. Elizabeth was awesome in attack and she made good space and some super passing decisions, along with shooting 6 of the goals, she needs to work on the actual speed of the ball in her throws and her defending position needs some fine tuning. Anastasia has nailed the footwork rule, now she needs to work on playing her own position on the court, she came too far down court which added to the slight midfield muddle. Overall a great game against a very efficient opposing team from Brambletye. 'Man' of the match for tenacity : Annabel Naylor PMc
Under 9 Lost 1-11

It was nice and sunny down on the netball courts this afternoon for Ashdown’s match against Brambletye.

Unfortunately the girls lost with Antonia scoring their only point in the last quarter. It was a difficult match for our under 8s considering they were up against under 9s and one under 10. However, they all played really well. Lily was seen all over the court always trying to find space. Cordelia did a great job at attacking for the ball at all times and she managed to get some great intercepts. Mila did a great job in centre despite the heat out on the court. We need to work on getting free and getting the ball down the court faster. The girls all put in a good effort today; I’m looking forward to future matches. OH
Wednesday, 12th October
Netball v Cumnor House
1st VII Lost 7-16
We played a reasonably efficient first quarter today in which the score was 4-3 to us. A huge number of tip-offs and interceptions were made by us and it was disappointing to then see the ball being freely given back to the Cumnor side. With efficient passing the score could have been much more in our favour.
Cumnor came out all guns blazing in the 2nd quarter and really showed us a thing or two. They easily took that quarter winning 8-0! The Ashdown girls were shell shocked at half time.

After a huge team talk, and a few minor tactical changes - placing Katerina in the goal defence position in order to utilise her height against the very tall goal attack, placing Lily Innes to wing defence to use her fighting spirit to keep the wing attack at bay, Cosi into centre which she has learnt to play beautifully recently and swapping Annabel Hickson and Tilly Butcher in the shooting circle - we took to the field again.
These changes reaped great rewards and we managed to draw that quarter. Annabel and her damaged fingers had to move back to goal shooter for the last quarter but other than that we kept to the new positions. This quarter was also a well fought battle which we narrowly lost 2-4.

We have much to work on. In particularly accurate passing, neater dodging, using square rather than diagonal passes and finally ringing the changes with our pass selection. 'Man' of the match Katerina Mathison. PMc
2nd VII Won 16-7
The 2nd team's match against Cumnor House today was a great success with a win of 16-7. All the girls put in an enormous effort throughout the match and our defence was very impressive. Thanks to our girls, the pressure put on Cumnor in the shooting circle was too much as Libby and Georgie worked hard to intercept and catch the rebounds to get the ball back down our goal end. Bota’s energy and drive was a great support to the rest of the team as she ducked and swerved through the opposition, snatching the ball constantly. Both our shooters, Aimee and Helena, showed just how good they were today by demonstrating how to get a goal from almost the very edge of the circle, very impressive girls! It was good to see all our girls working extremely well together as a team despite having only played a few matches this term. I’m certain that the girls will continue to improve and that our scores throughout the season will remain as strong as today’s! EH
3rd VII Lost 1-31
Although the scoreboard reads 1-31, don’t let this fool you; the Ashdown girls put up a strong fight. Throughout the game the girls carried on with great competitive spirit and most importantly had fun. Although new to netball, Paz’s skills continue to greatly improve and, from her efforts today, it is obvious she will become an accomplished netballer. Jenna was named player of the match by the Cumnor team for her drive and her intercepting skills. Team captain Issy’s enthusiastic cheering and motivation, along with Ellie’s goal in the final quarter, helped greatly to boost the morale of the entire team and helped spur all the girls on to a strong finish. Even though the end score was not in our favour, this match against a strong opposition was the perfect opportunity for the Ashdown girls to fine tune their skills for future games. Looking forward to many more matches in the future! KM
Under 11 Won 12-9
The under 11s played an outstanding match today against Cumnor House. The team got off to a flying start in the first quarter and went into a 4-1 lead. Cumnor then played some very good netball indeed and, by half time, had levelled the score at six goals each. Both teams worked extremely hard in the second half, but it was Ashdown who just had the edge in defence and attack which enabled us to keep a few goals ahead. Ashdown ran out winners in the end by 12-9. Girl of the match today goes to Georgie O'Brien for her brilliant interceptions at GD. All the under 11s seem to be growing in confidence and this is very pleasing to witness. Keep up the good work girls. JU
Under 10 Lost 6-9
What a fantastic match! The U10 girls worked tirelessly against very strong opposition and, as a sports teacher, I have never been so proud of a team. They were tenacious!
This really was a game of two halves. After the first ten minutes, Cumnor led 5-0. Ashdown struggled with the speed of the ball and confusing criss-cross of lines in the Sports Hall, as they are used to playing outdoors. Cumnor seized this opportunity. With strong and accurate passes, they dominated in the first two quarters and by half time they led 7-1.
As we know from previous matches, these U10s don’t give up that easily. After a team talk and some refreshing oranges, Ashdown were on fire! Footwork was tight, passing was accurate and our shooters were on target. We won the third quarter 2-3, most deservedly. In the last ten minutes, Ashdown had everything to play for. The girls fought hard. They marked every player, intercepted every lob and snatched every loose ball. As a result, we won the final quarter 0-2. With ten more minutes on the stopwatch, Ashdown would certainly have emerged victorious! One half lost, one half won. A wonderful example of perseverance and team work. Man of the match: Scarlett Fox VR

Netball v Brambletye
Under 9/8 Drew 2-2
What a pleasure it was to take the U9/8 match against Brambletye. Both teams were very evenly matched and the netball displayed was extremely good. Ashdown's passing and movement around the court was superb. Mila and Lily showed very mature play in the attack with their spacing and accurate throws. In defence, Cordelia and Tabitha were tested on many occasions by Brambletye's fast attacking play. Jemima and Eliza shared the WD position and played very nicely. Antonia scored both the Ashdown goals with the support of Esme in the shooting circle. The game ended in a 2-2 draw which was a fitting result for two smashing teams. Keep up the good work girls. JU

Netball v St Andrew’s
Under 11 Won 13-11
What a beautiful day to play netball down on the Sussex coast. The first quarter was played in an extremely fast fashion which saw St Andrew's go into a 4-3 lead. However, the Ashdown girls composed themselves and by half time had turned the game around to lead 6-5. Mollie had a very good game at centre and her footwork has much improved. Chloe worked so hard that she was really feeling the heat so she was moved into the GS position to cool down. This worked really well and Chloe shot nearly all of the Ashdown goals. Georgie coped really well with her opponent who was a very good player. She marked her closely and made some brilliant interceptions. Estella, Cristina and Seoyeon all shared the WD position. Our girl of the match today goes to Violet who has improved so much in just a few weeks at Ashdown. She is intelligent in her attack play and strong when needed in defence. JU
Under 10 Won 14-1
Under a baking sun, this was a most deserved win for the U10 girls. With superior skill and stamina, Ashdown dominated in all four quarters. As centre, Lucy set the pace of the game and St Andrew's found it difficult to keep up. Even though there was some crowding in our attacking third, Emily and Annabel made very effective use of bounce passes to feed the ball to Elizabeth in shooting circle. This was Emily's first match as goal shooter and she showed an excellent understanding of the position. By half time, Ashdown were 8-0 up.

In the second half, our defence had to work harder! As the Ashdown girls grew tired, passing became sloppy, allowing St Andrew's to seize the moment. St Andrew's began to attack with greater energy. They tightened up their footwork and made much more effective use of the space. However, with superb interceptions by Scarlett and aggressive snatches by Anastasia, Ashdown held their ground. St Andrew's had a number of chances but the ball simply wouldn't go through their ring and Hermione, as goalkeeper, was quick to grab any rebounds. Very well done, girls! You are applying the skills and tactics learned during games lessons and you are beginning to reap the rewards! Man of the match: Elizabeth McCarthy. VR
Under 9/8 Won 7-1
A beautiful day and many very excited young faces boarded the coach for a long journey down to Eastbourne for the first match of the season. Indeed the first netball match ever for some of these girls. They have worked really hard this term trying to come to grips with the basic netball rules.
The three U9 girls commanded the game in superb fashion. Cordelia was awesome at goal defence, a position that she has taken to like a duck to water. Mila was lively and omnipresent in the centre position. Antonia played well as goal attack and slotted in 6 of the 7 goals.
Esme moved well as goal shooter and received most of the balls she was sent, she even managed to pop one home in the first quarter. Lily was very determined in wing attack, picking up every loose ball and passing it well, her footwork was super! Jemima made huge improvements during the course of the game as her confidence grew. Tabitha marked her opponent well and made some accurate passes from the base line. Eliza kindly joined us for the match and she fitted in beautifully.
A fabulous match, girls; the training team of Olivia Harris and Kristie McDonald have done a super job with you so far! 'Man' of the match Cordelia Moore. PMc

Netball v Brighton College
1st VII Won 36-11
The result somewhat speaks for itself. However taking into account the immense talents of these senior girls it must be noted that their coach found plenty in this match that we can work on. We were reasonably adept in the first quarter as we found our feet. The second quarter we gave away many loose passes and the shooting was disappointing. In the third quarter the girls really began to show what they were made of winning 11-0. For the fourth quarter we swapped positions to allow Brighton a chance and the versatility of the team was shown to be good as they still won that quarter 5-2. Overall a great work out. 'Man of the Match' Lily St John. PMcC
2nd VII Lost 10-11
This was very much a game of two halves. Ashdown were 3-2 up in the first quarter and by half time were 5-4 ahead. As you can see by the scoreline, it was a closely contested match with every single girl working her socks off. Aimee and Helena made a good combination in the shooting circle and Bota and Sasha never stopped moving in the centre court to make life very difficult for the opposition. Brighton then had a very good third quarter and pulled two ahead with some super long range shots. The last quarter was very exciting indeed as Ashdown were putting every effort into making the score equal, but Brighton managed to hold on and won the game 11-10. Girl of the match today goes to our two magnificent defenders, Libby and Georgie, who made numerous interceptions and always kept the Brighton attack under pressure. Well done to all the players on a super game of netball. JU

Netball v Tavistock & Summerhill
Under 11/10 Lost 0-8
The mixed team today consisted of GS Estella, GA Elena, WA Cristina, C Annabel, WD Seoyeon, GD Anastasia, and GK Hermione. In the first half the Ashdown girls were very much outplayed. Tavistock had a superb GS who scored most of her goals from the edge of the circle to put Tavistock 5-0 up by half time. In the second half the penny seemed to drop and we started to make some interceptions and link a number of very nice passes together. A special mention goes to Hermione who played a very good GK and improved a lot during the game. This was all very good experience for the girls and they very much enjoyed the afternoon. JU
Under 10/9 Drew 2-2
As the sun came out today so did the smiles of the two teams. This game was played with lots of enthusiasm by all the girls. After the first half Tavistock were leading 1-0. Some positional changes were made at half time. Cordelia was moved into the GD position which made a huge difference as she made numerous interceptions. Lucy went to centre and, with her speed, she created lots of attacking moves. Antonia playing as GA scored two lovely goals. Momoko came to life in the second half and was super as GK. Mila, Eliza and Izzy were all very busy in the centre court and linked nicely with the attack and defence. The end score was 2-2 which we all felt was a fair result. Well done girls. JU

Netball v Cumnor House
Under 11 Won 15-2
This match was won in the shooting circle. Both teams were very evenly matched in the centre court, but it was the accurate shooting by Chloe and Nurshahar that gave us the winning edge. This was a good match to introduce Cristina and Seoyeon to play for Ashdown. They both played on the wing, got totally involved in the match and seemed to really enjoy being part of the team. Georgie and Tori both contributed solid defensive performances. Mollie effortlessly controlled the centre position with her super tip-offs and attacking play. Violet played with determination and picked up many of the loose balls. In the closing minutes of the game Estella made a fantastic interception which she then passed to our girl of the match today, Chloe Yorke. Chloe works tirelessly around the whole court and then pops up to score many a goal. Ashdown won the match 15-2. This was against a Cumnor B team, but nevertheless, it was a great performance. JU

Under 10 Lost 6-8

After a tough game on Wednesday, the U10 girls were raring to go against Cumnor House. The first quarter was exhilarating. With determination, and a little aggression, Ashdown snatched every ball. As centre, Emily forced the opposition to pick up the pace. She fed the ball quickly and accurately to the shooters, before dodging into space. Ten minutes whizzed by, Cumnor had little possession, and Ashdown were 4-1 up.
In the second quarter, Cumnor started to fight back and the game was very even from that point on. Strong defence in the shooting circle, by Lucy and Scarlett, meant that there were quick turn arounds throughout the game. At times, the sun made life difficult for the shooters. Elizabeth scored all 6 goals but she was well supported by Nastia who, before this season, had never even held a netball! After the third quarter, the score was 6-6. As the seconds ticked by, the girls fought hard but, unfortunately, they lost two goals in the closing minutes.

Unlucky to lose this netball match but with excellent sporting behaviour, flawless manners at match tea and the loudest ‘three cheers’ of any team, the Ashdown U10s won the most important match of all. 'Man of the Match' Lucy Hargrave. VR

Netball v Pennthorpe
2nd VII Lost 4-20
As can be seen by the result, today we played our first match against a very efficient Pennthorpe team. The score accurately reflects the two teams. That said, there is much to work on and much talent to work with in this group of girls.
Helena St John, our captain for the day, worked hard in the goal shooter position for the entire match. Her short dodges need some fine-tuning as does her shooting. Grace Chattey was tireless as goal attack. She played superbly in the centre court and all the way up to the circle. She and Helena need to learn to work well in the confines of the circle and begin to develop an understanding if their talents are to be used to their best advantage. Too many passes were made as we slowly got further from the goal post! Bota was fabulous at centre making superb dodges and some good tip offs. Sasha was awesome at goal defence making fantastic interceptions and passing hard and fast. Claudia played two quarters at wing attack neatly and efficiently. Ellie played one quarter at wing defence and one at goal keeper putting everything she could into those positions.
Our new girls really stepped up to the plate today after very few practices. Lucy must learn to move more fluidly, but she handled the ball well at goal keeper and passed accurately. Alexandra worked quite well and has really begun to master the footwork rule at wing defence for two quarters. Paz tried her hand at wing defence, wing attack and goal keeper, with every minute of play she made improvements in her understanding and technique.

Do not be down hearted girls we have made great strides today! PMc

Under 11 Won 12-4
The under 11's got off to a splendid start to their new season. In the first quarter Ashdown took a 4-1 lead with some lovely attacking play from Mollie and Chloe. The second quarter saw Pennthorpe play some excellent netball to pull the score back to 5-4. As the second half progressed our girls were improving with every passage of play. Georgie made numerous interceptions and Tori playing GK for the first time was strong and calm. Our three debut girls Violet, Mollie and Elena acquitted themselves really well and seemed to enjoy their first match in Ashdown colours. Estella took her time to get into the game but in the last quarter made two superb interceptions and then quickly sent the ball back into the attack. Our girl of the match today was Nurshahar, who has improved beyond all recognition. Ashdown won the match 12-4. Well done girls, I was very pleased with your performance and sporting behaviour today. JU
Under 10 Lost 6-13
After a long and sleepy bus journey into West Sussex, the U10 girls were a little slow to get going! In the first eight minutes, they were stunned by Pennthorpe’s quick passing and energetic movement around the court. Four goals were scored in quick succession and, by half time, Ashdown were 8-2 down. Luckily, Ashdown girls don’t give up that easily! They were shocked into action! With some superb interceptions by Scarlett, the substitution of Anastasia into WD and clever dodging by Emily, the second half was much more even. Elizabeth popped in four more goals and, with a strong defence, the girls slowed Pennthorpe’s play. It was greatly encouraging to see how much the girls improved over the four quarters. An exciting season lies ahead! VR

Netball v Ardingly
1st VII                   24-7

A fantastic last game of the season. The girls all played very well and enjoyed the bitter sweet last ever netball match at Ashdown.

All I am left to say is the improvements have been immense and the over last few years it has been my pleasure to help you learn and grow into consummate all round netball players. I shall watch your future careers in this sport with great interest.

Thank you Aimee, Laura, Issy, Millie, Elena, Vicky, Jasmine, Gabi and Leah for giving me every ounce of effort especially when we needed it most!  PMc

2nd VII                  21-2

Under 12A            22-1
Today the Under 12A team played their last match of the season against Ardingly in an away game. Winning 22-1, the girls played their very best in this last game in the beautiful sun, the best weather England has offered this season. Even though the girls had a desperation to beat their team’s best point score, they decided at half time that the game would be more fun if they chose their positions; thus each girl played their least comfortable position. As always this proved to be a hilarious decision, with attackers becoming defenders and wings becoming shooters. Even in opposite positions, however, the Ashdown girls still shone, shooting an extra nine points in the second half. Lily I is to be recognised for her superb intercepts the whole game through; she was an unstoppable force this match and was often the one to stop Ardingly getting the ball past centre. Well done girls. I am so proud of each girl and this season is definitely one you should all be proud of. KM

Under 11             10-28                   (JU)

Under 9               10-9
Today's match against Ardingly was a close one. By the third quarter the score was even at 6... Ashdown  managed to win their last match of the season by one goal with a final score of 10-9.

It was hot and sunny out on the courts making it difficult for our shooters, Elizabeth and Lucy, when faced with the sun but they managed to pull through.  We had some great centre pass intercepts by Hermione as well as some nice intercepts by Scarlett in the goal third.  All in all it was a great game and everyone in the team put in a massive effort.  OH

Saturday, 19th March
Netball v Cumnor House
1st VII                   16-14
A really exhilarating match was played in beautiful sunshine at Cumnor today. We were assured during the first quarter that any loose pass or lazy dodge was going to be punished! We were 3-6 down at the end of this tight but punishing quarter, due in part to the sun in our eyes making the shooting less than perfect. I put Leah into goal keeper for the second quarter and moved Jasmine to wing attack and, with renewed energy and a few tactical suggestions, we came out fighting. This was our best quarter;  with the sun no longer in our eyes, the shots went in and Leah managed to get the rebounds when Cumnor failed to score, again mainly due to the sun. Therefore by half time we were 9-8 up!
In the third quarter Jasmine moved to goal shooter in case we had the same problem with the sun, hoping that she would be able to get the rebounds, this she did as well as netting two of the goals. Laura had a go at goal attack which she played beautifully. Gabi was electric in her determination to make the ball her own and she made some awesome interceptions in this and many other quarters! We therefore managed to draw this quarter.
In the final quarter I took Jasmine off and put the team back to their more usual positions with Leah at goal keeper. They managed to draw one more goal ahead to finish with a narrow victory.  Vicky played with drive and enthusiasm at every turn, Issy passed accurately into the circle. Millie was omnipresent as ever and Aimee was calmly efficient at all times.
What a difference a year makes! Girls you have come on to outplay all my expectations this year. It will be bitter sweet to see you perform one last time on Wednesday!  'Man' of the Match THE FIRST NETBALL SQUAD!  PMc

2nd VII                   24-23
What a smashing game of netball this was with both teams competing at a very high level. The first quarter saw a very even match with the scores level at 6-6. In the second quarter Ashdown moved into a strong position. Lara Murray played superb as WA, quick of feet and thought, feeding the shooters, Lily StJ and Annabel, beautifully.

Although we then moved slightly ahead, Cumnor were breathing down our necks and gradually pulled the score back. They won the third quarter so in the last ten minutes it was all to play for. Katerina, Tilly G and Tilly B started picking up the pace and the ball was moving very fast around the court. Lily Innes made some lovely interceptions and controlled her passing. In the last minute Cumnor had the opportunity to level the score but missed their shots so we just managed to keep the lead with the score ending in a 24-23 win for Ashdown. Girl of the Match was Lara Murray. JU

Under 11/10          18-18
The team played a neck and neck match against Cumnor House which ended in a draw of 18 all. Throughout the entire game our girls put in an enormous amount of effort to come out of the game with a excellent result against tough competition. Bota, Sasha and Chloe all had a turn at centre which maintained the high energy levels throughout the match. Defence in the shooting circle by Georgie meant that there were quick turn arounds throughout the entire game. I’m so proud of all our girls and I have seen a vast improvement in their skills throughout this term. Thanks for such a great game!  EH

Under 9                  4-14
The under 9s' match against Cumnor House ended with a score of 14-4 with Cumnor House winning. The girls put up a good fight against a difficult opposition. Scarlett executed some great intercepts throughout the match. Elizabeth did some great shooting, scoring all 4 of the goals for Ashdown. Hatty showed good defence skills in the circle and maintained pressure on her opponent. With some more work on accurate passing and defence we could have had a better chance against Cumnor. All in all a great game girls, well done.  OH

Netball v Vinehall
1st VII            21-20
With Laura, Elena, Jasmine and Leah unavailable for today's match, the team had to undergo some rather drastic changes. During the first quarter Lara played her debut for the 1st team at goal shooter, Rose-Marie took up the challenge of wing defence and Gabi stepped into the position of goal keeper. Aimee, Issy, Millie and Vicky played in their usual positions. We were playing against a tall and efficient Vinehall team. By the end of that quarter we were drawing 5-5. Gabi was playing against a very tall goal shooter and found this to be very challenging even with her incredible standing jumps.

After a short tactical talk she came back on in the same position in the second quarter and with her immense athletic ability began to make some interceptions. Due to these and extremely good play and hard work by the rest of the team we had pulled ahead during the first half of this quarter. Vinehall altered their play and were soon pulling back on us. By half time we were only ahead by two goals. With so many changes to the team we were muddling at the attacking end of the centre third and in the attack so I made a couple of changes for the third quarter pulling Vicky into goal keeper, Millie into goal defence and placing Gabi at her more natural position of centre. Our lack of height in the defending and attacking circles meant that we found it impossible to get any rebounds and soon Vinehall had evened the score.
In the fourth quarter I put Gabi back into goal keeper and gave Vicky a try at centre. We managed to pull one goal ahead and thanks to a vital missed shot, Vinehall just failed to equalise at full time. The correct result for this match should have been a draw as both teams played their hearts out and Vinehall were unlucky in the dying seconds.  This was probably our most exciting game of the season.  PMc

2nd VII            26-5
Today’s match against Vinehall saw Ashdown as victors, winning 26-5. With so many girls off ill this week, the Under 12A’s welcomed Dana and Lusha to their team and all girls stepped up a grade, playing as the seconds. The girls all played superbly, with brilliant passes and control of the ball. Dana’s intercepts throughout the entire match deserve a special mention – they were incredible. By the time the third quarter rolled around, each girl had swapped positions, shaking their comfort levels slightly, but knowing these new roles were nothing they couldn’t handle. After a few brief mishaps of perfect passes to the opposition, the girls reclaimed their ability and continued to power the ball through the hoop. The best pass of the match is awarded to Lily I – she really did show her skill and kept all the girls (in both teams) laughing. After today’s win, we eagerly await Saturday’s match against Cumnor House.

3rd VII             6-30

Under 11        14-17         (JU)

Under 9          14-2

Both teams started off fairly evenly and towards the end of the first quarter Ashdown were slightly ahead by two goals to nil. Scarlett, who played GD today, made some crucial interceptions which she followed up by swiftly sending the ball back to Ashdown's attack. Hermione and Annabel were also very strong in our defence and made it difficult for Vinehall to build an attack to create any scoring opportunities. At half time Ashdown were only 3-0 ahead so the game could still have gone either way at that stage.
The 3rd netball team played a very difficult match against Vinehall today, losing 30-6. The opposition were very skilled and yet our girls gave it their all to the very last minute. The shooting by Maria and Kate was spot on, unfortunately the tight defence by Vinehall meant the ball was mostly in the centre third throughout the game. Both Ailsa and Annabel went to great effort to intimidate the opposition in their shooting circle.  I saw a vast improvement in all the players since their last match and I look forward to games in the future.  EH

The third quarter saw the U9s really step up a gear. Emily who had a very tall opponent started to use her dodging skills to gain possession and Izzy seemed to be just in the right place to pick up most of the loose balls. This quarter Elizabeth played some really super attacking netball and on many occasions she collected the ball in the centre third then sprinted to the circle to receive a very accurate return pass from the ever busy Lucy. Ashdown went on to win the match 14-2, with girl of the match Elizabeth for scoring all 14 goals. Well done girls on a very impressive win.

Netball v Hurstpierpoint
1st VII                25-20
The girls played superbly well from start to finish in this match. The first quarter was very tight with Ashdown taking a narrow lead of 5-4. With Issy missing the slightly radical decision was made to put our goal defence, Vicky, in to wing attack as it seemed as though a link was not working as well as it could.  Jasmine therefore went to goal defence and Leah into goal keeper. This worked like a dream and showed the true versatility of our senior players. We won that quarter 8-4! As the change was working so well those players stayed where they were for the remaining two quarters and Gabi and Elena moved around the wing defence spot at which they both shone!. We went on to narrowly lose the third quarter in a really exciting manner 8-9 and we just pipped the last quarter 4-3. Aimee and Laura were shooting magnificently throughout the match and their passing in and around the circle was second to none. Millie as ever was the nippy linchpin centre, always free and making superlative interceptions.  Again it is impossible to pick one person as 'Man' of the match, if pushed I would just commend Vicky on a great job at wing attack!    PMc

2nd VII                25-2
The 2nd team netball match against Hurstpierpoint resulted in a win of 25-2 and demonstrated the high level of skill of all players in the team. The girls tried their luck at a variety of positions, working all their skills and I’m so proud they gave these new positions a good go. Thalia’s skill in the centre position was of prime importance to the entire team’s final result as her intercepts and passes were pivotal to getting the ball down the court. Shooting by Kate was spot on and she contributed greatly to the team’s high moral. The 2nds played an excellent match and I would like to commend them on their amazing team spirit and support for one another throughout every match. EH

Under 12A         26-8
Under a beautiful sun, the Ashdown Under 12A team went head to head with a Hurst team comprised of both their 2nd and 3rd team girls. All girls played a superb game, and each should be proud of their efforts. We had a very strong defence, who were able to keep Hurst’s final score down to eight. Our attack was just as strong, rocketing the ball up the court and into the hoop 26 times; a spectacular effort. Not only did the girls play strongly in their usual positions, but they were each given a chance to show their versatility in the last quarter of the match with almost a complete team swap where our attackers became the defenders and vice-versa. Our two new shooters, Holly and Kat thought their new positions to be hilarious and believed themselves destined to fail. But with deep breaths and encouragement both on and off the court, both girls who usually play Goal Keeper and Centre respectively managed to score for the team. Lily StJ as goal attack played an excellent game, and deserves a special mention for her efforts today. KM

Under 9              5-5

The under 9s were a little slow to get going today. If it wasn't for the superb interceptions that Scarlett made in the first half I am sure that Hurst would have been ahead by more than their three goals to nil. With the substitution of Hermione into WD and some encouraging words on how we needed to work harder, attack the ball and pass more quickly, the second half saw us much improved. Emily and Annabel looked much sharper in the attack and Elizabeth showed her shooting prowess and popped in four lovely goals. Lucy pounced on any rebounds and also converted a goal with a nice shot. The final score was a fair result of 5-5 as Hurst dominated the first half and Ashdown the second. Girls of the match were Scarlett in the first half and Elizabeth in the second.

Goals for 69  Goals against 42

What a fantastic day, the one we have been working towards for up to 6 years!! The girls all behaved impeccably and played their hearts out in every match!

We were on fire at the start winning the first game against Cottesmore with consummate ease. The second was more of a challenge and we were 1-3 down at half time. I made a couple of tactical changes to the line up as we needed height in both circles and this clinched us the win. We never looked in danger in the Vinehall or Windlesham matches. We were 9-0 up at half time in the Amesbury match so I put all four of the stalwart reserves on to ensure that everyone had played at least one half of a match. This did somewhat disrupt our flow, but we still did not allow them to score. In the St Aubyns match we played as if our lives depended on it and easily took the victory.
Our last three games were a struggle. We lost narrowly to Hurst due to some rather inaccurate passing. This made the girls heads drop a little and caused the 2-8 loss against Cranleigh. We may not have beaten them anyway but we never looked in the game. After that match I gave the girls a stiff talking to. We decided to just go out and enjoy playing netball in our last match. This we did ensuring that with this mind set we played our very best netball. We narrowly lost that game to the eventual regional runners up 6-8.
A magnificent performance by all!!
Huge thanks must also go to our stalwart supporters who backed us all the way as they have done from the touchline for many years!  PMc

Lost play off v Brambletye

Most times in sport you get what you deserve but this was not the case for the under 12's at the Regionals. The results speak for themselves with some great wins against much larger schools, such as Dulwich. Throughout the rounds the girls were outstanding and many other schools coaches complemented them on their beautiful, competitive but fair netball. Throughout the whole day each girl did what was asked of them. The game against Cranleigh was an example of netball being played at it's best in this age group and as we have never beaten them before a draw was a great result. Ashdown won the group but only on the same points as Cranleigh who also won all their other games. So a count back of goals, for and against, was taken and incredibly Ashdown and Cranleigh were equal. So then an average score was taken and they won the group by the thinnest of margins, an eighth of a goal!!

The girls were hugely disappointed and by now exhausted from the last two matches against the two other top teams in our group but then had to go into a play-off against Brambletye to get to the finals. We just couldn't get ourselves up for the game (including myself) as we all felt we had already done enough to qualify. We lost the match and therefore did not qualify for the National finals which was very upsetting for us all. The tears quickly followed. However, these girls should be very proud of how they performed on the day and with their continued full commitment I am sure that next year it will be their time to succeed. A big thank you to our wonderful supporting parents who went through the many highs and shared the end of day agony with the team.

Netball v Tavistock and Summerhill
Under 10       4-4
The girls played a very even game of netball today. The abilities of both schools seemed to match up perfectly. We tied 4 all. Elizabeth stepped up from the U9s for Estella and did an excellent job. Georgie and Chloe played some great defence.  Nurshahar did some excellent shooting, scoring the first couple of goals of the game. Tori, Alienor and Claudia also played a great game.  Well done girls.    OH

Under 9         5-1

It was a beautiful afternoon for the under 9s girls to win their match against Tavistock & Summerhill. The score ended at 5-1 with the last goal being scored just before the end. The girls all put in a great effort to get the ball down to the shooters Elizabeth and Lucy who did some awesome shooting.  Hatty played some great defence always getting her distance and her arms up. All the girls put in a great effort and deserved to win.  Well done.

Cumnor House Under 13 Netball Versatility Tournament
Fifth

v Windlesham 5-5
v Cumnor B 3-3
v Brighton Junior 2-3
v Cumnor U12 6-1
v Brighton Prep 0-7
v Cumnor A 3-3
v Cottesmore 12-4
The squad of 8 girls began rather slowly in this tournament playing at less than their best in the first three matches. By the fourth match they had begun to get in to their stride. They played quite superbly in the last three matches in particular against Brighton Prep although the score of 0-7 does not reflect this. They just failed to put the ball in the net on the first attempt each time and the extremely tall defence took the rebound on each occasion. They continued in this vein in the sixth match against Cumnor A team, managing to hold them to a draw and were on fire against Cottesmore. Special mention today goes to Millie, Laura and Izzy who were tireless in their endeavours, defending as if their lives depended on it, Aimee for her accurate passing, Elena for being constantly free and her intelligent use of the bounce pass, Jasmine for her shooting ,Vicky for her interceptions and Rose-Marie for her neat and accurate play.
'Man of the match' Millie van Grutten.   PMc

Netball v Cumnor House

Under 11A    17-4
A mixed team of under 11 A and B team girls played Cumnor House B team today.  Ashdown got off to a very good start and were leading 6-0 by half time. This was due to some very accurate shooting by Helena SJ and some super defending from Aiko and Susannah. Some changes were made at half time and Cumnor had a very good third quarter, winning the quarter 2-1. Sasha made some impact at GA and, with some more games under her belt, I'm sure she will become a regular A team player. Ashdown seemed to gain lots of momentum in the last quarter and went on to win the match 17-4. JU

Under 10      11-10
WE WON! It was all smiles for the Ashdown House Under 10s after their nail biting match against Cumnor! The first quarter was close but we were not playing our best and came off court disheartened with the score being 2-3 to Cumnor. After a firm pep talk the girls pulled up their socks and shone like the netball stars they are! I’m so proud of each and every one of the girls for pushing themselves for the three quarters of the game. At half time the scores were even (6-6) and we were even more determined to win. Our defence (Alienor Turanli-GK, Georgie O’Brien-GD and Estella Montagu-WD) never stopped running and reached for the ball with all their might, getting great intercepts along the way. Victoria Burgoyne-WA and Claudia Grace-C worked so well together, moving in front of their opponents and getting the ball up and down the court. Nurshahar Izbassar-GS and Chloe Yorke-GA did an outstanding job in the circle and got some great goals. At the end of the third quarter the scores were still even at 7-7. It was an exciting last quarter but we managed to win at 11-10! The girls had truly played their hardest and it certainly payed off – I’ve never seen smiles so big and proud! KB

Under 9         2-9
The Under 9 netball girls played a tough match against Cumnor House this afternoon. Despite the score, most girls showed great sportsmanship, although they generally were not their usual enthusiastic selves. Special mention must go to Hermione Harrison at WA, who passed beautifully and found space on the court well. Hatty Innes was also an outstanding GD,making many beautiful intercepts and catching rebounds. For next week, the team needs to work on their passing, particularly when faced against taller opposition like Cumnor. Better luck next time girls, and a big thank you to the parents for their support!   GP

Netball v Cumnor House

1st VII               11-17
We played a practice versatility match today in preparation for the tournament on Saturday. This match really highlighted the various strengths and weaknesses of our squad of eight girls.  Everyone made a real effort to play the position that they were allocated each quarter. Jasmine was outstanding in her versatility around the court. Elena was prepared to fight for possession at every turn. We held Cumnor to a 9-9 draw at half time. However we let our guard slip in the second half and allowed them to run away with the match. We need to dig deeper girls.  PMc

2nd VII               12-2
We started off the match well scoring 8 goals in the first quarter with Cumnor only scoring 1. Leah and Sophie made some great interceptions and defended brilliantly. Lara was very quick on the court today running up and down and making excellent passes and interceptions despite having hurt her ankle in the second quarter. Lusha as GS played very well as her first time playing this position scoring 5 goals. Our end score was 12-2 to us and everyone in the team played amazingly.   Alex Bluck

3rd VII               10-4
Ashdown started off well, scoring 6 goals in the first quarter, and Cumnor scoring 1. Nurshat and Annabel did some good interceptions on the other end of the court. In the second quarter we played well again scoring 3 goals and Cumnor scoring 3 as well.Well played to Dana, and Hatty, and also to Maria who was really good at shooting.  Kate Brockman

Netball v Hawthorns

Under 11A        6-17
Today our under 11s came up against a very classy and strong Hawthorns team. Most of their girls play club netball and it showed. After the first half we were 13-1 down. The Hawthorns umpire very kindly swapped her players into different positions which made for a better and more competitive second half. Alexandra and Susannah tried ever so hard to swing the play in our favour. Grace had a good game in three different positions and shot a lovely long range goal. Our girls never gave up and I feel they may have picked up some useful tips from the match. The final score was 17-6 to Hawthorns. JU

Under 11B        3-6
A big congratulations to the U11Bs for their huge effort against Hawthorns today.  Despite the final result (6-3 to Hawthorns) every girl worked very hard and showed some great potential and very encouraging sportsmanship. Our attack was strong and our defence was great; by the end of the first half the scores were even. Unfortunately Hawthorns broke away in the second half and we were unable to catch up. Frances Young (GS) and Sasha Nikolaeva (GA) worked brilliantly in the goal circle, trying very hard and Annabel Edwards (GK) and Camilla Wilkins (GD) made some terrific intercepts and rebounds. Well done to all for a great game!  KB

Netball v St Christopher’s

Under 10           2-17
The girls played a tough match today against St Christopher’s in cold and windy conditions. Despite this all the girls played a fantastic match and all endeavoured to get themselves in front of their players and into space so they could receive the ball. Estella was especially good at this and was moving at all times. Our team captain, Claudia, played a brilliant game and was always free to receive passes. Unfortunately our opposition were very strong in both defence and attack so the girls had to work extra hard to score their own points and prevent St Christopher’s from scoring more. All the girls played a fantastic match and should all be proud of their efforts in such tough conditions. GOOD WORK!  SF

Under 9             3-1
Congratulations to the Under 9 netball team on another well fought win. The match got off to a rocky start with our captain and star centre, Emily Bland, falling and grazing her nose. Despite this, she put on a brave face and proved to the opposition what a great netballer she is with her great intercepts. Well done also to our shooting duo, Elizabeth McCarthy and Lucy Hargrave, who managed to shoot beautifully into the 10 foot posts… a foot higher than what they’re used to! Hermione Harrison was a great WD as she always thought carefully about where she was throwing the ball and was always available for a pass. Cordelia Moore played WA very well also, especially when the St Christopher’s defence was high. Overall, it was a very close match and all nine girls should be very proud of themselves. A big thank you to St Christopher’s for their sportsmanship and to the parents for their support! GP

Netball v Brambletye

Under 11A       10-14
This was a very close match against Brambletye. In the first quater Ashdown were 3 - 2 up, but unfortunately as the game progressed we made too many passing errors, which the opposition turned into goals. Our overall play this week was much improved and a special mention must go to Alexandra Mathison, who played with strength and determination throughout the match. We have the ability in this squad of players and with some hard work I am sure it will all eventually come together. The final score was 14 - 10 to Brambletye. JU

Under 10           2-17
It was rainy and cold when we started our match against Brambletye. Despite the weather we played hard and tried our very best, but unfortunately it just wasn’t meant to be. The final result was 17-2 to Brambletye. A big thank you to Ai Yokoyama who stepped in as GK as Alienor was off with an injury. All girls showed huge amounts of sportsmanship and on the whole played really well. Good effort!   KB

Under 9             7-2
Despite the windy and rainy weather, all nine members of the team ran onto the court full of enthusiasm and smiles. All girls played brilliantly, working together as a team and always moving around the court. Special mention must go to our star centre, Emily Bland, who made intercept after intercept, flinging the ball straight to the shooters. Hatty Innes also played very well as GD, fighting hard for the ball and dodging beautifully. As WA, Annabel Naylor was always available for a pass, finding space on the court incredibly well. I am so proud of all the girls, who have all improved so much since they first started played the sport. Thank you to all the supporters, and I can’t wait to see how the team go in their next match! Netball v Cumnor House

1st VII                 17-19
The girls began well in this match taking the first quarter 7-4, my only criticism being the lack of positive passing. During the second quarter they allowed Cumnor to draw to within one goal as they were still not passing with their usual confidence. Also Cumnor were very efficient in their defending strategy and our girls were not dodging with purpose....and still the confidence was lacking in their passing. In the third quarter Cumnor took the lead by one goal and then furthered their lead to two goals.

This was a great match for these girls who have not had enough to work against recently and this match has given them and their coach plenty to work on!  'Man of the match':  Vicky Watson for her incredible determination, Elena Breeze for being ever free and Aimee deHavas for great work around the circle.   PMc

The girls played a fantastic game against the Cumnor House Under 12A team drawing 10-10.   The girls all played brilliantly and were evenly matched which pushed them to play their best. Gabi Skinner played a magnificent game and intercepted an infinite number of balls as well as always putting pressure on her player and moving forward into space to receive the ball. Unfortunately we lost her to an injured ankle half way through the game. However the rest of the girls played on and worked even harder with the re-shuffling of positions. Another player who played exceedingly well was Leah Mellor whose defence was incredible, keeping her distance while defending but still tipping the ball. It was an amazing game to watch as every single girl played phenomenally and really worked hard against Cumnor House. Well done to all the girls, it is defiantly a game worth remembering.  SF

3rd VII                  3-28
Despite the disappointing score, all nine players should be very proud of their enthusiasm and for keeping their heads up throughout the entire match. We were put up against the Cumnor 2nd team, so we were down by 18-0 at the end of the first half. After some position swapping, we managed to get a couple of points on the board thanks to Thalia Merryweather’s brilliant shooting and moving around the circle. Well done also to Nurshat Izbassar who played an excellent GD/GK by constantly calling for the ball and making some superb intercepts. Francesca Burgoyne played the entire match as centre, zipping around the court and always trying her best. I look forward to watching the girls play in their next match soon!   GP

Under 11A           7-18
Ashdown got off to a bad start in this match going 14-3 down by half time. A number of positional changes were made which saw some improvement in the second half. As always, when playing a superior team, our girls learnt a lot from the experience and it was pleasing to see that not one single girl gave up as everyone tried their best throughout. One positive from the match was that we improved enough to win the last quarter 2-1, but in general it's back to the training court tomorrow with lots to work on. JU

Under 10            4-11
It was a tough match against Cumnor but we tried our very hardest and never gave up. Showing great sportsmanship throughout the game were Claudia Grace (C) and Estella Montagu (WD) who made good decisions and persevered with enthusiasm. Georgie O’Brien (GD) played remarkably and amazed both Ashdown and Cumnor players as she intercepted countless balls in the Cumnor goal circle. Chloe Yorke (GA) never gave up hope and ran up and down the court making sure the ball got into our goal circle safely and also scored a couple of goals. After the first quarter we were down 4-1 but by half time the score was 7-4. Unfortunately we did not score any more goals and the final result was 11-4 to Cumnor. I’m really pleased with how the girls are working as a team and am looking forward to next match! Good effort girls.   KB

Under 9               3-7
Our under 9s were a little slow to start in this match whilst Cumnor were very fast out of the blocks and quickly went into a 4-1 lead. After some gentle 'prodding' the second quarter was much better for us as we won the quarter 2 - 1. Cordelia, who was playing for the first time in an Ashdown netball team, had an excellent debut.  Although Cumnor ran out eventual 7 - 3 winners this was a very closely contested match with lots of end to end play. Elizabeth was strong in the GA position scoring our 3 goals and Emily always seems to be there when needed. Annabel Naylor visibly grew in confidence and in the last quarter she made some super interceptions. Girl of the match today was Hatty Innes as her defensive play was outstanding which kept the score line close throughout.   JU

Netball v Benenden

1st VII            17-3
We began today at full strength. It was a lovely sunny day and both teams were up for a stiff competitive match. We played well in the first quarter and were up 8-2 by the whistle but we were not making the most of our positioning play and were muddling in the centre court. In the second quarter we played far more efficiently and by half time we were winning 14-3.

At this point I decided to move everybody out of position in order to hone their netballing skills as versatile all-rounders. Jasmine and Izzy went to goal shooter and goal attack, Laura, Vicky and Aimee into the centre court and Millie and Elena into defence. Everybody played well in these positions when we were defending although they were somewhat muddled as we attacked.
In the fourth quarter we moved again putting Elena and Vicky in attack, Millie, Izzy and Jasmine in the centre court and Laura and Aimee in defence. Again we played some good netball.  Particular praise must go to Millie, Elena and Laura when they were defending.  'Man' of the Match Laura Kendall.  PMc

2nd VII            12-9
The weather turned out to be beautiful and sunny for the 2nd VII netball match. The girls were all in tremendous form and played a fantastic game against Benenden. Both defence and attack played outstanding quarters, all the girls contributing to the team. Special mentions go to Rose-Marie who played a player much taller than herself and used the right strategy to evade her defender. Also to Leah Mellor who used her height to her advantage and constantly put her player under pressure. All the girls played an amazing game. Well done. SF

3rd VII            13-4
Congratulations to the 3rd netball team on another fantastic win this season! The match got off with a flying start, with a 6-1 lead by the end of the first quarter. As GS, Kate Brockman made shooting look effortless, and positioned herself in the circle perfectly. Hatty Miller moved beautifully around the court, passing the ball right into her team mate’s space. With a seven goal lead at the end of the first half and some well deserved oranges, the girls were right back on court for some more superb play. Flora Koska was a great WD, always managing to find space on the court and calling for the ball. Centre Lusha Zharova was as ball-hungry as ever, always picking up a stray ball. The Benenden coach said he was amazed at how well the girls all worked together and supported each other, so all should be incredibly proud of their effort and enthusiasm throughout the afternoon. I can’t wait to see how this great team continues throughout the season! GP

Netball v Tavistock and Summerhill
Under 10        9-4

Netball v Hurstpierpoint
Under 9         4-3

Ashdown got off to a good start by going into a 2 -1 lead in the first quarter. A funny moment was our second goal by Lucy as the ball bounced two foot off the top of the goal post then came back down straight though the net. They all count! By half time the score was level and this had turned into a very close and exciting game. All the girls were working really hard with Emily tireless as centre and both Scarlett and Hatty putting in really strong performances in defence. Momoko and Elizabeth were super in the attack with Elizabeth converting two goals. Girl of the of the match goes to Lucy as she scored the winning goal literally from the edge of the circle. A beautiful long range shot! A very close encounter that Ashdown narrowly won 4-3.  A fun match played with lots of smiles from both teams. Well down girls.  JU

Saturday, 2nd October
Netball v Brighton College
1st VII      22-13

This was a fantastic game from start to finish. It was played in the most superb manner of fair and competitive netball. By the end of the first quarter Ashdown was winning 6-5 but almost all the goals had been scored against the centre pass as the defence were all putting up the most magnificent fight. Elena was making superb interceptions, Vicky was playing out of her skin and Jasmine was superb in her calm but ruthlessly efficient manner.
In the second quarter two goals were scored apiece as the teams jostled for supremacy making the score 8-7 to Ashdown at half time. In the third quarter our attack really began to make their mark. Millie and Rose-Marie were constantly free enabling Aimee and Laura to make the most of the play around the circle. Our shooting was deadly accurate and we won that quarter 6-2 making the score at three quarters time 14-9.

Brighton decided that there was no way that they could breach the gap in the format that they were playing so they moved many of their girls around in the final quarter. We capitalised on this and won that quarter 8-4. Brighton were great adversaries and the major difference between the two teams was the fact that Ashdown's girls knew each others' play from years of being together and Brighton played less as a team and more as seven separate but very good netballers. Team work really is the key!  'Man' of the match:  Vicky Watson and Elena Breeze.  PMc

2nd VII        8-2
After heavy rain, both teams bravely gave their all on an extremely slippery netball court surface . Although not a high scoring game, the match was packed with plenty of exciting action as Ashdown built up a 4-2 lead by half time. Leah and Sophie were very strong in our defence with Leah making some super interceptions midcourt. Ashdown gained further momentum as the game progressed with Gabbi and Thalia's speed of play in attack making it very difficult for the opposition to defend.  When given the opportunity both Lara and Dana converted some beautiful shots. Hatty had a lovely calm and neatness about her game which was much needed at times to steady the frantic pace of the game. The final score was 8-2 to Ashdown and girl of the match was the whole team. A lovely sporting match by both teams.  JU

3rd VII        8-15

Despite the miserable weather the girls played really well in their match against Brighton Collage today. The slippery courts made the footwork hard but the girls persevered played their best. Special mentions go to our Lusha and Maria who both played an amazing match and were always on top of their game. Even though the girls were brilliant unfortunately we lost 8-15. Well done girls!  SF

Wednesday, 29th September
Netball v St Andrew's

Under 11A      14-11

What was very pleasing about this match was how the girls put into the game what we had been practising in training. Our use of space on the court and speed of passing had really improved. Alexandra worked particularly hard at GA and Helena St John showed more tenacity in the shooting circle. Grace and Inju performed well in the centre court, whilst Camilla and Susannah were tremendous in defence against two good players from the opposition. This was a close match but we managed to just keep slightly ahead all the way through, finally winning 14-11. JU

Under 11B       8-3
This match was a joy to watch as the girls improved so much as the game went on. St Andrew's took the lead in the first quarter but we pulled the scores back level by half time. This was mainly due to some lovely centre court play by Ellie, Frances, Helena Foord, Aiko and Kate. Bota and Sasha, who was playing her first ever game of netball, were an absolute revelation as our shooters. They both scored four beautiful goals each helping us to an 8-3 victory. Ai was excellent throughout the match as our goalkeeper and played well against some very tall opponents. Annabel Edwards was the girl of the match due to her numerous, and fantastic, interceptions. Well done girls and keep up the good work.  JU

Under 10         6-8        (SF)

Under 9          12-1

The girls were magnificent from the word 'go' today. They scored three goals in each quarter, running up another magnificent 12 goals by the end of the match. The centre passes went superbly, accurate passes by Emily to the dynamic runs of Elizabeth. Momoko, Eliza and Annabel moved very well to receive the next pass and Lucy waited patiently and then made her superbly timed run. The passing around the circle was always neat and efficient. These attackers also put their heart and soul into defending the ball if we lost possession and regularly managed to make lovely interceptions.  Scarlett has made great strides as goal keeper and she made some super interceptions. Hatty was electric in her defending managing to intercept the almost impossible! Izzy and Hermione were really good at wing defence ensuring that their partners were given very little space to get the ball. These defenders also attacked well ensuring good passage of the ball up the court.  Hatty had an injury during the match and Momoko stepped into the breach as goal defence for the rest of that quarter, she did a great job!

We changed some positions in the last quarter of the match moving Emily to goal attack, Elizabeth to centre, Hatty to goal shooter and Lucy to goal defence. Each girl made the most of the chance and made some very valuable contributions. These four in particular showing that they are indeed turning into all round netball players. ‘Man of the match’ Elizabeth McCarthy for dynamic play and fantastic shooting.   PMc
It was a beautiful day for netball. The girls worked hard in their warm up after their long journey and were totally ready for the first match of their season. We were lucky to have a core of 6 girls who had already completed a years netball at Ashdown and knew exactly what to do. This was very obvious in this match .Hatty defended brilliantly at goal defence, Emily was neat and efficient at centre, Elizabeth was dynamic and unceasingly accurate at goal attack, Lucy passed beautifully around the circle, Izzy was determined on the wing, and Momoko never put a foot wrong also on the wing. Our new recruits gave their all and have already learnt a great deal. Scarlett stuck like glue to her goal shooter and Annabel passed quite well when she had the ball.

2nd VII       15-2

The 2nd

VII girls had a fantastic start to the season winning their match 15-2. Leah Mellor played really well using her height to intercept multiple passes and rebounds.  Gabi Skinner played a brilliant game as centre, always moving into space and using her speed to make intercepts. As well as this, Lara Murray, despite her injuries, played a fantastic game in GS with wonderful accuracy and utilising all the coaching tips she was given. All the girls played really well and should all be proud.   SF

Under 10      0-15

With only a small year group all of the girls in the 4's will be playing for the under 10s this season. Three of our girls had never played in a netball match before and were understandably quite nervous. However, we got off to a reasonable start and were only 2 goals down in the first quarter. Georgie O'Brien, one of the girls who had never played before, was outstanding in the GD position, doing her very best to keep the score down and countless times she intercepted a pass to send the ball back into our attack. Alienore improved as the game progressed, as did Chloe and Nurshahar. I was encouraged by a few nice passages of play from the girls so I am sure that with some hard work on the training court we will see much improvement. The girls never gave up, although they eventually lost 15-0, and played with a smile throughout.

JU

Under 9      12-1

By the end of the first quarter we were already winning 4-0! Only one goal was scored in the second quarter making it 5-0 at half time. We managed another 4 goals in the third quarter and in the final quarter we won 3-1. Cranleigh fought hard and never gave up. It was a great testament to them that their perseverance paid off in the dying seconds when they scored their goal to great jubilation!

A fabulous team effort but particular praise to Hatty, Emily and Elizabeth.  PMc

Today’s match against Mid-Sussex was a riveting match to watch. Whilst the girls had been nervous about playing a team known for their skill and excellence at netball, by the time the match rolled around fire was in their hearts and they were ready to prove their ability; they were ready to win. And what a win it was, 22-16. This week I can’t choose ‘player of the match’ as each girl put in her best efforts and everyone helped to conquer such a strong team. I will however mention the talent of Katerina and Katie, whose control of the ball and precision in passing helped greatly to continuous feed the ball through each third and down to our shooters, Annabel H and Lily SJ. The fact that the girls played such a great match, with excellent sportsmanship and amazing skill, proves to each of them just how fantastic they are, and how well they work together as a team. Not only did they win today, but they had a fun match too; always an important point. Thank you to the parents who came to watch the game on home ground; it really does mean the world to the girls to have such a large support group. KM

1st VII            20-14

The girls all played superbly today especially in the first quarter where we all but won the game taking a 9- 1 lead. Laura and Aimee were superb in and around the shooting circle, Issy, Millie, Elena and Gabi were electric in the centre court and Jasmine, Leah and Gabi were wonderful in defence. It was a great warm up game as the last before the IAPS regionals that they have all been working towards during their Ashdown netball careers some for as long as 6 years and some for as little as one full netball season. We are all looking forward to putting our collective talents into the tournament next week!

'Man' of the match THE ENTIRE TEAM!

Netball v Cottesmore
2nd VII            8-15

The girls played a tough match in deteriorating weather conditions as the rain got heavier in the second half, but the entire team continued to play their best. Excellent play was seen by Dana and Thalia in the centre third. Nurshat’s dedication throughout the game must be acknowledged as she continued to be a pivotal point in the team even after she had to remove her glasses due to heavy rain - for this she was, in my opinion, player of the match. Thanks girls for being such good sports in such tough conditions!  EH

Under 11A     6-11
If we could play just three minutes a quarter, the U11s would have won this match quite easily as they started each quarter really well! We initially score goals quite quickly then seem to switch off. There were so many basic mistakes by the whole team, from dropping the ball to throwing it to the opposition, as well as frequent footwork mistakes.  This team is capable of playing some super netball and I can only hope that they are in a more focused mood next Thursday for the Regionals. This game ended early in the 4th quarter, with Cottesmore leading 11-6, as the heavens opened and the court became unplayable. Alexandra Mathison was voted girl of the match by the Cottesmore team.

Netball v Worth
1st VII              27-13

A constant drizzle throughout the first three-quarters of this match did not dampen the girls' fighting spirit. We came out all guns blazing and zipped into a 7-2 lead by quarter time. It did however take us a few minutes to get the ball down to our end! Worth came back with great fighting spirit in the second half;  they had a good pair in defence who leant well and a strong wing attack and centre who fed well into the circle. Emma Harris an old Ashdownian shot beautifully in the second quarter. This quarter was much closer with the score being 8-7 to Ashdown. This did move us one goal further ahead at half time, the score was now 15-9.

After a short tactical talk the Ashdown girls came back with a stunning third quarter of 8 goals to 3 and completed the job as the rain ceased with a final quarter of 4-1.  'Man' of the Match was Jasmine Bradley for superb but understated defence. PMcC

Under 12A        29-9

The U12 girls were 'on fire' today. All were totally focused on the match with each and every girl playing superbly.  In the defence, Holly, Lily Innes, Cosima and Tilly Butcher marked their opponents closely throughout ensuring that Worth never got into a flowing rhythm. Katerina calmly controlled the centre court to help feed our attack of Katie, Lily SJ, Miss Grace and Annabel who are all slick, quick and accurate. Ashdown won the match 29-9 and our girl of the match was, the whole team. JU

Under 11A        16-4

The U11 girls were playing an Under 12B team from Worth and started a little nervously as the Worth girls were a lot taller. However, we used all our dodging skills and speed around the court to neutralise the size difference. Ali Mathison played an excellent first half and scored most of the Ashdown goals. Helena Foord had a very good game showing her great versatility by playing really well in three different positions. At half time Ashdown were leading 8-2 and repeated the score line in the second half for a well deserved 16-4 win. Girl of the match was Helena Foord. JU

Wednesday, 9th February
Netball v Brambletye
1st VII                17-11

I took a squad of 10 girls to this match with a plan to use all of them almost evenly. Every girl therefore had at least one quarter off the court. They all surpassed themselves. We now have a very strong squad able to compete in the first team. We won the first quarter 5-2, the second 3-1, the third 6-4 and drew the third. It was very pleasing to see each girl taking up the challenge of a different position or people in different positions around her as if there had been no alteration. As always the senior girls are consummate netballers and not tied to any particular position.  Laura was outstanding again today as was Vicky and therefore were narrowly today's 'Men' of the match.  PMc

Netball v Great Walstead
3rd VII                22-13

The 3rd netball team played an excellent match against

Great Walstead

winning 22-13. The girls worked really well together as a team and remained on top of the opposition from start to finish. Hatty’s quick passes, intercepts and general effort on the court was a valuable asset for the Ashdown House team. Maria’s success in both shooting and the toss up in conjunction with Kate’s flawless aim in the shooting circle allowed the Ashdown team’s score to get away from the opposition in the last quarter.  Thanks to all the girls for a great game - very well played everyone!  EH

Under 10             4-7

The girls played a very competitive game of netball today. The game was intense right up until the final whistle. Unfortunately their hard work didn't score them a win although the game was very tight right up until the second half where Walstead broke away leaving the final score at 7-4.

Tori at centre played a great game appearing everywhere on the court with a grin on her face. Alienor and Chloe were doing some great passing while Estella and Georgie managed to obtain many intercepts enabling the ball to get down our end. Claudia at WA got the ball out from the centre pass nicely and Nurshahar did some great shooting. The girls got a bit caught up in the nerves towards the end of the match and began rushing their game which resulted in silly passing and inaccurate decisions. But all in all a great game to watch.  OH

Netball v Sackville
Under 12A         25-11

What a pleasure it is to take this U12 team as they played some really super netball. Lily SJ was impressive in attack with absolutely outstanding shooting whilst Katerina was back to her best in the centre position. Holly and Lily Innes were completely in control in the defence, making numerous interceptions. Tilly G had a real look of determination today and, at one point, intercepted a Sackville centre pass sending the ball straight back into our attack. Cosima, Katie and Tilly B were all very influential in the centre court. Girl of the match today goes to Annabel Hickson as her dodging and intelligent play in the shooting circle was brilliant. A most enjoyable and well contested match by both teams, which Ashdown won 25-11. JU

Saturday, 5th February
Netball v Holmewood House
1st VII              17-11

A really good match in which we all learnt a great deal but mainly Aimee who had to learn how to overcome being blocked and Laura who had to cope with her goal attack arriving later in to the circle because of this. Holmewood are always very efficient defenders and this was challenging in all areas of the court. We got more and more able to deal with the pressure that they were exerting on us and finding ways to out smart their defenders. All played superbly but ‘Man of the Match’ goes to Laura for her efficiency and magnificent shooting and Jasmine for her defence.  PMc

2nd VII

A netball tournament between senior girls from three Ashdown House teams and one team from Holmewood House School. With one team made up of both Holemwood and Ashdown girls and the other three teams played up entirely of Ashdown girls, all played well. Each team was made up of girls with a mixture of skill levels and in the end the A team were the winners, successfully defeating the opposition in every match. There was some excellent shooting in the competition by Rose-Marie, Annabel Hickson and Lily St John as well as some strong defence from Cosima and Sophie. Lara and Katie continually intercepted the ball, ensuring the games were very exciting for the parents on the sidelines. All girls in the tournament really put in a huge amount of effort in each of their matches and worked well in teams they had not previously played in. Thanks to all the girls for a great afternoon!  EH

Under 11A       5-14

Strong winds and constant drizzle does not make for a very entertaining netball match. The first half was a close affair with both teams cancelling out most of each other's attacking play with any high balls being intercepted or taken by the wind. Our defenders, Aiko and Camilla, were working extremely hard to restrict Holmewood's scoring chances, whilst Grace had an excellent second quarter at WD, positioning herself really well and pouncing on any loose balls. The first half ended with Holmewood narrowly ahead by three goals to one. Unfortunately in the third quarter the wind favoured Holmewood and they took full advantage to build a very strong 11-3 lead. We fared a little better in the last quarter but our attack and shooting were not on song today and, with Holmewood well into their stride, they went on to win 14-5. JU

Under 10         1-15

Todays away game against Homewood was a rather tricky one. Unfortunately we lost although the girls all put in a stunning effort. The whole game was a little rushed with Ashdown trying to keep up with Holmewood's talented players. Unluckily this made our passes and general game play far too quick for the girls abilities. Our one goal was scored in the third quarter by Chloe. There were also some good intercepts by Georgie, Alienor and Estella.  The girls need to watch their stepping and concentrate on the game but apart from that a great game. Well done.  OH

Under 9           5-16

Today’s Under 9 match against Holmewood House School was a truly great game. Each Ashdown girl should be very proud of her efforts. Although we lost 16-5, our spirit remained high, demonstrated by our very loud and enthusiastic cheers at the end of the game (I’ve never heard such loud celebrations). The girls played on the Holmewood indoor court, a great relief to not only the players, but the parents who came along and indeed us umpires as well. Whilst all girls played their best, Mila deserves a special mention; at the beginning of the second quarter she fell over and hit her head on the ground. After a quick visit to the Nurses’ station she was back on the side of the court, rearing to go. Momoko also deserves a mention as she gallantly put on a red bib and played the second quarter for Holmewood House whom were one player down due to injury. Playing against ones own team can be a challenging and confusing job, but Momoco played brilliantly for her temporary team, and she should be very proud of herself. Even though the Under 9’s lost, they were very enthusiastic to play and tried the best; Hatty is a perfect example of this energy as she was found defending everywhere on the court. Well done girls, you should all be so proud. KM

Netball v Christ’s Hospital
1st VII               20-6

Today we were missing Aimee and Elena from the usual squad. Thus the team was altered from its usual make up. Leah played goal keeper which she did slightly too politely as is her nature, but with efficiency and some flashes of genius. Vicky was in her usual position of goal defence where she was as devastating to the opposition's attack as usual. Gabi came in as wing defence and played the game of her life; her interceptions are second to none and her passing today was deadly accurate! Millie was fast and efficient in her normal position of centre and always ready for the square pass. Izzy, in her usual position of wing defence, made deadly accurate passes in to the circle area look common place. Jasmine stepped up to the plate as goal attack and after an initial attack of nerves looked as though she had always been there. Laura, our neat and efficient goal shooter, made every move look easy and shot with incredible accuracy as is her way!

We played well in the first quarter and efficiently in the second. The disaster of the third prompted a rather heated team talk from the coach with no holes barred. To my wonderful girls' credit they took the whole thing on board and implemented all that was asked of them. We consequently won that quarter 11-1. Wow! If only we played like that all the time!  'Man of the Match' Vicky Watson  PMc

2nd VII              13-19

The 2ndnetball team played a challenging match against Christ’s Hospital. Throughout the 40 minute game all of the girls put in an enormous level of effort to change the six point margin between the two teams. The shooting by both Alex and Lara was outstanding, however the challenge was getting the ball past the very tall opposition. With some good work in the centre third by both Lusha and Dana, the girls managed to remain enthused throughout the game and worked on their defending skills. Thanks to all the girls for taking my direction and I look forward their continued good spirits in future matches.  EH

Netball v Cumnor House
Under 12A        17-17

Today the Under 12A match against Cumnor House was nail biting. Loosing the first quarter 7-2, the Ashdown girls became downhearted and worried that their game wasn’t strong enough. However, after a quick pep talk between the first and second quarters, the girls fought hard, bringing the score to 7-9 (Cumnor’s way). Increasing their score by five goals, the girls knew that anything was possible, even against such a strong opposition. Managing to persevere through the rain, a now common occurrence for the girls' games, Ashdown fought harder then I have ever seen them fight in the second half of the game. Cosi, who was off for the last quarter, described the end of the game as “so horrible”; the intensity from both teams was overwhelming (my heart was racing, and I was only umpiring!). The game ended on a 17-17 draw, a result which each girl should be proud of. Our attack was strong and our defence was stronger, so all girls should be proud of themselves. Having Katerina back on the team was a great advantage; not only because of her skill, but because of her ability to boost the moral of the other girls and give them all a sense of team identity. KM

Cumnor House Under 10 Netball Tournament
Under 10          3rd in group

Team: Nurshahar, Chloe, Tori, Claudia, Estella, Georgie, Alienor, Elizabeth, Scarlett

Results:
Lost 2-0 v Copthorne
Drew 0-0 v Cumnor B
Lost 2-1 v Windlesham

It was our first tournament and we all really enjoyed the experience. The girls did their very best but unfortunately the goals did not go in for us today. Every single girl contributed with great enthusiasm. I'm sure that with some hard work in our training sessions the girls will improve and better results will come as the season progresses. JU

Netball v Cranleigh
1st VII               10-21

After a very long coach trip and then a route march from one school site to another the girls began this match very much on the back foot. Within seconds they were 0-2 down. It is testament to their strength of character that they pulled themselves together and began to play some good netball. Cranleigh are a very athletic and well drilled team. They always made good use of a loose pass or a lazy dodge, but we managed to keep the score down to 6-12 at half time. In the third quarter the girls came out with a renewed vigour and drew the quarter 2-2. Unfortunately the tight and efficient netball did not extend to the final quarter where Cranleigh played superbly. We have much to learn from this match which is always a good thing and our shooters must practice in order to retain consistency. 'Man of the Match' Vicky Watson for her tireless defence.  PMc

2nd VII                7-10

The 2nd netball team played an intense match against Cranleigh School, only just missing out on the win in the final quarter. Despite the score ending up at 10-7 in favour of Cranleigh, the girls played an excellent game and took direction really well managing to improve their skills as the game progressed. Both Lara and Lusha did outstandingly well in the centre position and Alex’s shooting skills were strong throughout the match. Finally Leah, the girl nominated by the opposing team as 'player of the match', executed amazing intercepts and managed to obtain almost every rebound from under the opposing team’s hoop for all four quarters of the game. The girls all played very well and put up a great fight until the final whistle sounded.  EH

Under 12A        13-17

Today’s match against Cranleigh was played in a truly English fashion; the rain poured down upon the court and the temperature was a chilling seven degrees. Nevertheless the girls put in their best efforts against very worthy opponents. The Cranleigh team was strong and set a fast pace, providing the Ashdown girls with a high speed match, often made difficult by the slippery ball and court. Drawing 5-5 after the first quarter, the Ashdown girls were determined to improve their game, slow down the court movement and thus control their passes in an effort to capture the game. Unfortunately by the end of the match the girls lost 13-17. Whilst this loss disappointed the team, I am so proud of each girl. Katie S. was awarded player of the match for her choices in the centre position, and for that she should be congratulated; it is an honour to be recognised by the opposition for good play. However, each girl should be proud of her efforts today: they all played the best netball I’ve seen from games and training combined. KM

Netball v Copthorne

Under 11A         6-6

This was an extremely closely contested netball match. At half time we were drawing with three goals each. As you can see by the score a lot of the action took place in the centre court area. All the girls were working very hard with both teams making numerous interceptions to cancel out each others attacking play. Our defence were the stars of the show in this match with Camilla and Aiko stoutly defending most of what was thrown at them. A fair result for both teams. JU

Under 11B         1-8

Although it was freezing on court the girls managed to keep focused for most of the game.  Frances, our goal shooter, shot Ashdown's goal in the third quarter which was a fabulous effort.  We had Chloe and Georgie step up from the under 10s to give some of the girls a break on court. They both played really well with Georgie doing some nice defence work.  Grace as centre also played a marvellous game and kept up with Copthorne's speedy player. Annabel was doing some great work in the goal circle managing to get the ball off Copthorne a few times. Charas, Ai and Ellie also put in an awesome effort.  Nice work girls.  OH

Under 10          20-0

The girls had a smashing win today. Claudia and Tori both did a great job as centre, they managed to appear everywhere on the court. Georgie had some amazing intercepts of the ball which made it very difficult for Copthorne to get the ball down their end.  Estella was also playing great defence with many intercepts. Nurshahar did some great shooting which continued to raise Ashdown's score.  Alienor was playing fabulously as well. All the girls deserve a big pat on the back. Nice work.  OH

Under 9             6-1

The dark and damp conditions did not seem to affect the U9s as this match was played with lots of fun and smiles. Scarlett and Hatty were superb in their defensive roles, making many tips offs and interceptions. Emily controlled the centre court area by picking up numerous loose balls. At half time Ashdown were narrowly ahead 3-1.

In the second half we seemed to have much more poccession. Elizabeth was moving speedily around the court and fed the ball to Lucy, who converted two lovely shots. This put us into a 5-1 lead at three quarter time. Cordelia, our captain for the day, played consistently well throughout the match. Annabel who had hurt herself in the second quarter bravely came back on for the last quarter and made some superb interceptions. Momoko and Izzy contributed to the overall team performance helping us win the match 6-1. Girl of the match goes to Scarlett for her goalkeeping skills which kept Copthornes score to a minimum. Netball v Cottesmore
1st VII                26-10

At the start of this match I was surprised to see a team that bore little resemblance to the wonderful team I see on the netball courts in training sessions. There was poor decision making, awful passing and the marking was non existent. After going 4-0 down the girls started to apply themselves and clawed their way back to 5-5. Even so, at the end of the first quarter we were all in agreement that it was a terrible display. To the girls credit they responded well and, looking like a different team, winning the second quarter 10-2. As the game progressed the girls got into their stride.  Amiee and Laura's understanding of each other was brilliant and their shooting spot on.  Vicky Watson stood up magnificently to the challenge of marking Cottesmores best player. The end result was a victory of 26-10 to Ashdown in what turned out to be an enjoyable game played in a great spirit.  JU

2nd VII                34-0

The Ashdown House 2nd netball team played a brilliant match against Cottesmore winning 34-0. All the girls put in an enormous effort as shooters, attackers and defenders. Nurshat proved her skill as a shooter in the final quarter, scoring goal after goal. Leah and Lusha’s intercepts and Dana’s defending meant Ashdown had an amazing hand on the ball. Lara was all over the court, pushing her boundaries throughout the match. It was an excellent effort and once more the team played an awesome game!  EH

Under 11A         12-12

The girls worked hard in rather Arctic conditions this afternoon. Their passing was a little erratic with only 50% going to the intended recipient. Aiko played an extremely solid role in defence and was certainly the best player on court during the first half. Ali pulled herself up to play efficiently and with new drive and purpose in the second half. We really must learn not to call for the ball as this only alerts a good defending player. Fast and efficient dodging and keeping possession is the key. We must work hard on this before the regionals.  'Man of the Match' Aiko Eliot and Alexandra Mathison.  PMc

Under 10/9         14-1

The girls played a marvellous game of Netball today.  Ashdown was leading from the start and the girls did a good job of getting the ball out and finding space.  OH

Netball v St Bede’s
Under 12A          24-5
T

oday’s match against St Bede’s was very well played. Each girl put in her best efforts, and for this reason I am so proud of the Under 12As. Winning 24-5, Ashdown is undefeated for this term. Katie S played superbly today, trying out a range of positions, including centre. She was to be seen all over the court, intercepting the ball by jumping into the air at great height.  Holly also played brilliantly today. Before the first whistle had even blown, a ball hit her on the head in warm up; however, this did not stop her. She played a great game, especially when being a defence in the goals. Playing on home ground, we had a great support team of parents and siblings who helped to encourage the girls throughout their game and to celebrate their victory. Well done girls! You should all be so proud of yourselves; I know I am proud of you! KM

Netball v St Andrew’s
1st VII               16-10

The girls all played really well today but Millie vG was outstanding in her delivery of the ball. She made a huge impact around the circle. Alexandra Bluck played her first full game for the 1st team today and she slotted beautifully into the position of wing attack. She dodged well and passed efficiently. Vicky was her usual tireless self, making some great interceptions. Laura and Aimee passed well around the circle. Rose-Marie came in as goal shooter for one quarter and at this time Laura had a go at goal attack at which she shone. Elena and Jasmine played well but must alter their game when the attack of the other team are making the same moves repeatedly. Overall a good learning experience.  'Man of the Match' :  Millie van Grutten.  PMc

2nd VII               16-1

All these girls covered themselves with glory today. Rose-Marie and Lara fitted together beautifully in the shooting circle and shot accurately. Cesci was always free due to her impressive dodging. Gabi was awesome making fantastic interceptions look common place. Dana marked beautifully. Lusha with her intense determination could teach many a more talented player a thing or two about never giving up and fighting for the loose ball. Leah and Sophie were a true force to be reckoned with in defence.  WOW girls what a performance!  'Man of the Match': Gabi Skinner for her incredible interceptions.  PMc

Under 12A        22-4

Today’s match against St Andrew’s was truly spectacular. I’m proud to report that the girls all played superbly, not only showing off their skills but leading from the start. Katie S played a great first half in the centre position intercepting the ball often. Cosima K also played a great game in first half as wing defence, dodging the opposition frequently. Leading nineteen to one, the girls showed their versatility, taking on positions they do not usually play. Lily I shot a superb goal in the second half, boosting her confidence as a shooter. Well Done girls. KM

Under 12B          1-8

The Under 12Bs put in a great effort in today’s match. Although they lost eight to one, the girls tried their hardest and worked on their skills continuously throughout the match. Tilly G was to be found running all over the court in her centre position, intercepting the ball regularly and exercising her skills with bounce passes, chest passes and lobs. Jenna B began the game not believing in her ability to play a good game, but after only a few minutes as goalkeeper her confidence boosted dramatically and she was on fire. Even though the girls lost, I’m so proud of their effort and have no doubt that next week's game will show further confidence in each individual and in the team. KM

Netball v Fonthill Lodge
Under 11A         22-2

The under 11 girls played superbly in the first quarter. Every girl marked closely and the passing was quick and accurate.  Alexandra Mathison did not miss a single shot and the score at the end of the first quarter was 9-0 to Ashdown.  For the second quarter some positional changes were made. Helena Foord and Sasha went into the shooting positions where they both worked well together in the circle and managed to score six more goals. At half time further changes were made to even up the game. There was no stopping the girls today though as they played incredibly well in many different positions. Aiko, who normally plays GK, scored two goals. After a few early misses from Grace she then went on to score four quick goals in the last quarter. All credit must go to Fonthill as they never gave up and in the last quarter they scored two lovely goals. Ashdown went on to win the game 22-2. I could not pick girl of the match today as they were all superb. JU

Under 9             11-0

The girls played a fabulous game today it was good to see Ashdown House leading right from the start.  Elizabeth and Hatty were constantly intercepting the ball and getting it down the court.   We won although Fonthill Lodge put in a massive amount of effort and played a great game.  Well done girls.  OH

Saturday, 15th January

Netball v Marlborough House
1st VII               19-15

The girls had had three practices before this match and were therefore ready to face opposition. Marlborough House fielded a very athletic team who were a little rusty since they play hockey for the majority of the Autumn Term. We played neat and efficient netball in the first quarter and managed to pull ahead 8-4. During the second quarter we pulled ahead by two more goals with Leah having her first quarter with the team at goal keeper. During the third quarter Leah played wing defence and in this one we pulled ahead by one more goal bringing the score to 16-9. In the fourth quarter she played goal shooter and in this quarter the combination of uncertainty in our attacking circle and Marlborough really getting into their rhythm meant that we lost the quarter 3-6. A great opposition for this match and some super netball by our girls, in particular the shooting by Aimee and Laura and the neat and efficient passing around the court by the entire team. 'Man of the Match': Laura Kendall.  PMc

2nd VII               13-3

The 2nd team played an excellent match against their opposition, Marlborough House. The game featured terrific shooting by Rose-Marie and Alexandra despite the strong winds. Throughout the game great intercepts were made by Gabi and Sophie enabling the final score in favour of Ashdown. The entire team stepped up a notch in defence to make an awesome game with a great score!  EH

Under 12A        18-9

The Under 12As played a spectacular match today against Marlborough House. I am proud to report that the girls won 18-9. Today’s match was thought to provide a challenge, seeing as the girls hadn’t played since the middle of last year; but their dedication and enthusiasm for netball allowed them to show their brilliant skill. Tilly G was to be found all over the court, intercepting the balls superbly as wing attack, and our two shooters, Annabel H and Lily StJ managed to shoot many goals, despite the winds which decided to blow at gale force the moment the girls were up to shoot. Well Done Girls! A great start to the season.  KM

Under 11A        18-4

After what seems like an age since we last played, we went to Marlborough House to play a netball match. If we thought that after such a long break the Under 11s would be a little stale, this was certainly not the case.  In the first quarter we raced into an early 4-0 lead. Helena SJ played beautifully in the circle, benefitting from Ali's effective attacking and ball feeding into her. Inju was full of beans and controlled the centre court all match. Camilla and Aiko were strong in the defence and made it very difficult for Marlborough House to convert their shots into goals. Grace and Helena Foord shared the WD position and both made a positive impact.  Although Ashdown eventually won 18-4, there was some very closely fought netball at times.  Girl of the match goes to Bota this week. Her passing of the ball is extremely accurate and can make all the difference in the attack. Well done girls.  JU

Under 10            7-8

The girls all put in a fantastic effort today out on the courts. It was great to see the girls playing so well in their first game back.  We were neck in neck throughout the whole game with a tie score between each quarter.  Unfortunately Marlborough broke away in the last quarter and won by one goal. A special mention to Chloe and Georgie who played a spectacular game. All of the other girls played an amazing game and I commend them on their efforts.  OH

Saturday, 27th November
Netball v Mid-Sussex

1st VII               23-34

A team of tall athletic girls arrived to play our 1st team today and we could see right from the word 'go' that it was going to be a challenging match. We managed to almost hold our own in the first quarter ending a well fought contest 5-8 down. We headed into the second quarter and found that Mid-Sussex had stepped up a gear and they ran away with that quarter comfortably as we only scored 4 and they scored 13. We were therefore 9-21 down at half time.

After a stiff talking to and tactical discussions we came back out to play the third quarter with our heads up and ready for the next challenge. We played brilliantly in that quarter winning it by 9-3. This gave the girls hope but Mid-Sussex had an answer for us in the last quarter where they played superbly to win the quarter 5-10. Our girls really stepped up to the mark in this one and showed what they are made of. Well played everyone!  PMc

Netball v Rose Hill

2nd VII               16-9

On Saturday, 27th November the 2nd team played a match against Rose Hill.  They were short of players so Nurshat Izbassar and Lara Murray played for the opposition. Even though it was extremely cold we all played well. Leah did some amazing interceptions while Alex and Rose-Marie shot brilliantly and so the final score was 16-9. Well played everyone!!

Sophie Sood

Under 11A         5-13

The scarves, beanies and fleeces were all out on display this afternoon for one of the coldest matches I have ever umpired! After a lot of star jumps and finger warm ups, the girls bounded onto the court with admirable enthusiasm. The match got off to a great start, with a 3-3 draw at the end of the first quarter, thanks to Sasha and Alexandra’s quick feet and controlled shooting. Well done also to Inju for continuing to play even after she twisted her angle and had a ball to the head twice within 30 seconds!

However, by half time, the girls were starting to fade, with a few slip ups and bad passes. Although we let our draw slip away, the girls played a well fought game and should be proud of their efforts. It was decided that the match was to finish after three quarter time so we could all dash inside for some well-deserved tea! Well done to all players for battling the Arctic temperatures and I look forward to seeing your future matches. GP

Under 11B         3-3

As soon as the girls arrived, the star jumps started to make sure everyone was warm for the match on such a cold day! Despite the cold conditions the girls played an excellent game of netball against Rose Hill today. Our defence was strong with Annabel and Ai working brilliantly in the circle as well as Charas in WD. Also the attack were on the ball and always working hard to get in front of their players and move into space to receive the ball. Unfortunately the game had to be called off at three quarter time due to the cold conditions and the girls drew at 3-3. All the girls played really well and should be proud of their effort!  SF

Under 10          13-9

It was a cold but successful game this afternoon against Rosehill. The girls had their usual enthusiasm back in place and I’m proud to say we were in the lead from start to finish! Our defence (Alienor Turanli-GK, Georgie O’Brien-GD and Estella Montagu-WD) got some fabulous intercepts, jumping and reaching for the ball at all times. Claudia Grace (C) made intelligent passes and moved swiftly around the court and should be very happy of how she performed in today’s match. Nurshahar Izbassar (GS) and Tori Burgoyne (WA) worked really well at moving in front of their players and getting the ball into the circle. “Star Player of the Match” goes to Chloe Yorke (GA) who did an outstanding job scoring 12 goals and working ever so hard all over the court. By full time, the score was 13-9 to Ashdown! It was a well deserved win and the girls left the court with big smiles on their faces. Well done to everyone! KB

Wednesday, 24th November
Netball v Vinehall

Under 11A     10-6

We started this match with some trepidation as Vinehall had a team of very tall girls. Most of their team were head and shoulders above our girls. However, in the first quarter Ashdown did very well to edge into a narrow 3-2 lead. We continued to play well and by half time were a little more comfortable as we pulled ahead 7-3. This was mainly due to our two superb defenders of Susannah, who worked out the Vinehall centre pass and intercepted them all, and Camilla, for her stonewall defending in the circle. The match continued to be a closely fought affair but Ashdown's speed of play down the court, with Inju, Bota and Alexandra, was the deciding factor. Grace had a really good last quarter, making two lovely interceptions, and finally Sasha, who was making her debut in the As, played with real zest and shot some quality goals. The final score was 10-6 to Ashdown. Well done girls.   JU

Under 10         9-9

The Under 10s arrived at Vinehall in the cold and went straight into the game. We were off to a not so great start with everyone being very lazy and not putting much effort in. At three quarter time, we were down 7-4. After a firm pep talk, most girls pulled their socks up and tried very hard. There were flashes of great netball skill throughout the game, but their heads just weren’t in the game meaning there were also flashes of “completely crazy playing”. A special mention to Chloe Yorke (GA) who played outstandingly throughout the game but shone especially in the fourth quarter. She scored eight goals in this game. It was a remarkable comeback for the under 10s and the final result was 9-9 which we were pleased with. Well done to all!   KB

Under 9         13-1

The girls all played really well in the near freezing temperatures today. After the first quarter we were 6-0 up - here we were playing in our best positions. I moved everybody in the second quarter giving Emily a go at goal shooter and putting Lucy out to goal attack so that she could try the position in a match but also to keep her warm! Scarlett moved out to wing attack so that she could hone these skills and also to ward off the cold. Hatty moved to centre so that she could learn how to link attack and defence. Elizabeth went to goal defence so that she could learn what moves were difficult for her own position's defence to defend. Momoko stepped up to the mark as goal keeper and Cordelia played wing defence. This all went well so I moved all the girls again in the third quarter. Here I gave goal shooter and goal attack to our defenders Hatty and Scarlett, Elizabeth the role of centre and Emily and Lucy goal defence and goal shooter. Cordelia and Annabel played on the wing. For the final quarter we went back to our original positions.  A really good game was played by all in every position they tried and Vinehall worked really hard and never gave up!  PMc

Netball v St Christopher’s

Under 11B      3-14, 4-1

The girls played a tough game today in the cold weather but still strived to play their best. Ashdown played two 20 minute games against St Christopher’s - both their As and Bs. In both games the girls worked hard to get in front of their players and make as many intercepts as possible. Unfortunately the girls lost their first game against the As 3-14. Despite this the team kept at it the whole game. In the second game the girls won against the Bs 4-1, a well deserved win. Special mentions go to Aiko and Helena who both played fantastically.  SF

Wednesday, 17th November
Netball v Hazelwood

Under 11B       7-4

This was a most enjoyable game. Both teams were very evenly matched and played with great spirit throughout. Ashdown took the lead in the first quarter with some lovely shots from Frances Young. The centre court play was fast and furious which suited Ellie as she is very quick. Charaspat showed that she has a great understanding of the game and always seems to find the space for that crucial pass. Ai who was playing GK, and Kate at WD, made some lovely interceptions and passes. Ashdown were the better side and this was mainly due to our commitment and fitness. We eventually won a close game 7-4. Girl of the match goes to Annabel Edwards in her role as GD. She made numerous tip offs and always has an encouraging word for everyone. JU

Netball v Hurstpierpoint

Under 9          7-8

This was a match where some brilliant play was followed by a disastrous pass thus losing possession. In the first few minutes Scarlett and Hatty made some incredible interceptions and marked as if their life depended on it only to pass the ball straight to the opposition. That's what we will be working on for the next few sessions! Hermione and Izzy dodged well and made good runs into space only to hang on to the ball a little too long and for Hurst's defenders to cover our originally free players. A clear training exercise will follow! Emily and Cordelia both initially dodged well and found super space but then gave up when they were not passed to. Never giving up and clear signals showing that we are free will be included tomorrow! Elizabeth and Lucy both made superb runs into the circle and passed quickly and efficiently to each other. However once behind their opponent they appeared to remain there rather than to move in front. Another practice destined to appear tomorrow!

Overall we could have won the match and certainly would have drawn it if it hadn't been for Lucy being knocked flying as she hurtled into the circle to receive the ball with only 45 seconds to go. However she remained down and time ran away from us.  Overall a good effort girls! we have learnt much-but have a way to go.  PMc

Saturday, 13th November

Netball v St Ronan’s

1st VII              25-9

The girls began a little slowly today allowing St Ronan's plenty of space to move the ball around. It wasn't until the third quarter that they pulled out the stops and showed their true colours. In this quarter they pulled ahead by another 7 goals. In the fourth quarter we switched all our positions around. Millie van Grutten was out standing today so she is our 'Man' of the match.   PMc

2nd VII             18-11

The girls played a fantastic game against St Ronan's today winning the game 18-11. The game got off to a brilliant start with Leah and Sophie towering over their opponents and getting every rebound. In the second quarter the attackers really picked up their game, Gabi playing amazingly in the centre and the shooters began sinking shot after shot ending the quarter 8-1. After a few position changes the girls continued to play really well showing their versatility in their foreign positions while still displaying basic netball skills like footwork and strong, accurate passes exceptionally well. All the girls played an amazing game and should all be proud of their win that was definitely deserved.  SF

Under 11A      12-13

This was everything you would want in a match with two well matched teams both giving their all. Due to playing conditions, we played a slightly shortened game of three x ten minute quarters. Both teams displayed some excellent controlled netball skills throughout the match. Over the last few weeks we have not been playing to our full potential, but today I was very impressed and pleased with our overall level of play. To explain how close this match was, in the first quarter Ashdown were 5-4 up, in the 2nd quarter 8-8 and then in the last quarter St Ronan's managed to score that vital winning goal in the last few seconds to make the final score 13-12. Girl of the match goes to all the girls today, Camilla, Alexandra M, Bota, Inju, Helena SJ, Grace, Susannah and Aiko.   JU

Under 10          3-11

We played a match of ten minute thirds against St Ronan’s and unfortunately we were defeated with the final result being 11-3. The Ashdown girls were off to a good start in the first few minutes scoring the first goal of the match but didn’t manage to score anything else until the last third. The girls showed great sportsmanship but their usual enthusiasm just wasn’t there and it was reflected in their playing. We still need to work on moving and dodging in front of our players and making sure our passes are accurate. There were flashes of great netball skills throughout the game, but it wasn’t our match. Good effort girls, better luck next time. KB

Wednesday, 10th November
Netball v St Bede’s

Under 11B        11-2

It was a new experience for most of the team to play netball in a Sports Hall. Once we had established which were the netball lines on the court, the U11Bs got off to a fine start and by half time were leading 7-1. Botakoz and Sasha were simply unstoppable in our attack and used their speed of play to gain and keep possession. Frances Young, our goal shooter, made some amazing long range shots. Ellie and Helena SJ shared the centre and WD positions and both played beautifully throughout the match. Ashdown went on to win the game 11-2 and, as the score line reflects, our defence of Annabel Edwards and Ai Yokoyama was magnificent. Very pleasing to see the girls playing so well together and working as a team. Judging by the smiles on their faces at the end the girls really enjoyed the game. Girl of the match goes to, the whole team. Well done girls!   JU

Under 9            10-7

The girls found the number of lines marked on the indoor sports hall a little disconcerting to say the least and due to these we were often off side or out of court. However we played magnificently particularly in the first quarter where we shot to a 5-0 lead in the first five minutes due to some incredible shooting by Elizabeth! St Bede's managed one goal as this quarter came to a close. In the next quarter St Bede's stepped up their game and brought the score back to 7-4. One goal was scored apiece in the third quarter and Ashdown edged slightly further ahead in the final quarter.

These talented girls are really beginning to get the hang of netball. Scarlett marked very well, Hatty has made great strides with her passing, Emily was always free and passed accurately and well, Elizabeth shot like a marksman and passed accurately and hard, Lucy dodged beautifully and was always free. Izzy and Annabel picked up many a loose ball and Cordelia was fabulous in her endeavours to mark, dodge and pass.

'Man of the Match' Cordelia for HUGE improvements all round.  PMc

2nd VII             13-1
The 2nd netball team played an excellent game against Worth School winning 13-1. Whilst there was quite a margin between the final scores, Worth put up a great fight throughout the four quarters. The whole team played their A game today, but some particular standouts were Leah and Lara whose intercepts were essential to getting the ball down the goal end. It was great to have Gabi back in the centre position and she played a game that didn’t disappoint. Thalia’s skills at both WA and WD were an obvious stand out and were critical to Ashdown’s skilled play in the centre third. A well played game girls; looking forward to many successful matches in the future! EHThe girls all played superbly today especially in the first quarter where we all but won the game taking a 9- 1 lead. Laura and Aimee were superb in and around the shooting circle, Issy, Millie, Elena and Gabi were electric in the centre court and Jasmine, Leah and Gabi were wonderful in defence. It was a great warm up game as the last before the IAPS regionals that they have all been working towards during their Ashdown netball careers, some for as long as 6 years and some for as little as one full netball season. We are all looking forward to putting our collective talents into the tournament next week.  'Man' of the match THE ENTIRE TEAM!  PMcToday’s match against Mid-Sussex was a riveting match to watch. I will however mention the talent of Katerina and Katie, whose control of the ball and precision in passing helped greatly to continuously feed the ball through each third and down to our shooters, Annabel H and Lily StJ. KM

Netball v Cottesmore
2nd VII            8-15
The girls played a tough match in deteriorating weather conditions as the rain got heavier in the second half. The entire team continued to play their best. Excellent play was seen by Dana and Thalia in the centre third. Nurshat’s dedication throughout the game must be acknowledged as she continued to be a pivotal point in the team even after she had to remove her glasses due to heavy rain- for this she was, in my opinion, player of the match. Thanks girls for being such good sports in such tough conditions! EH The girls all played superbly today especially in the first quarter where we all but won the game taking a 9- 1 lead. As you can see from the results we had a mixed day of some highs and a few lows. All the girls played to their potential but strong winds and bright sunshine made passing and shooting very difficult.  The games we drew were against large schools and our our best performance of the day was the win against the Duke of Kent school. Although we just fell short of qualifying for the Nationals the girls gave an excellent account of themselves and I am very proud of them all. The girls were impeccably behaved throughout the day and a big thank you must go to our brilliant supporting parents. JU
