Tennis v Cumnor House

Under 13 Mixed VI

Match cancelled after almost two sets due to adverse weather.

Scores at this time: Ashdown leading 4 sets to 0.

Our 1st mixed team travelled to Cumnor yesterday, and all started well. Katerina Mathison and William Payne, our 1st pair, won their first round against Cumnor 2 with ease, 6-0, as did our 3rd pair, Lily Innes and Luke Berry. Our 2nd pair, Lily St John and Dominic Prest, also won reasonably comfortably, 6-1. A sudden hailstorm and heavy rain called off play. Although it was a little too early to declare a sure win, Cumnor’s coach declared us the much stronger team and, had the match been allowed to continue, we should have had a win. I was very impressed with the general level of play from our team, and the professional attitude they showed. BS

Tennis v Windlesham House

Under 13 Boys’ VI Lost 1-8
Windlesham proved themselves to be able opponents on the day, matched quite closely in terms of skill with our players on the whole. Our first pair won 4-2 against Windlesham 2 in round 1, and there was a closely fought match between our 3rd and Windlesham’s 1st pair too! William Payne and Dominic Prest made a brilliant partnership, reading each others moves and producing some striking ground shots and tight rallies. Simeon Lee was our wildcard, playing for the first time for the 3rd pair with Luke Berry. He showed lots of skill and precision with his shots and, being a left hander, proved a valuable asset. Luke, with his characteristic reliability, beautifully placed ground strokes and calm temperament, was an ideal pairing. They had some close games too in the 2nd and 3rd rounds, but didn’t manage a win against their opposite pair. Nikko Elliott and William Womersley made a tentative start as 2nd pair, and seemed to gain confidence through the match. Some of their games were also close calls, going to deuces. All of the boys thoroughly enjoyed the experienceBS

Under 13 Girls’ VI Won 8-1
The girls all played so well! They fought right to the end and this allowed them to win 8 out of the 9 matches in total. Lily and Kat played exceptionally well winning two of their matches 6–0 and the other 6–2. The conditions weren’t too great - they played in the rain. But this did not stop them giving it their all. They all showed very good sportsmanship on and off the court. Well done girls, I am very proud of you!  TM

Tennis v Brambletye
Under 11 Boys’ VI         Lost 3-6
Our under 11 team had an exciting match against Brambletye last night – all pairs were quite evenly matched and there were some thrilling rallies. Our first pair, Dominic Prest and Luke Berry, had easy victories over Brambletye’s 2nd and 3rd pairs. When they came to play Brambletye 1st, they were often outplayed by their opponents' strength at the net. However, they were strong from the baseline and there were some beautifully placed shots from both boys, neither of whom would take losing without a fight.

Our 2nd pair of Cameron Galloway and James Bradley struggled against Brambletye 1, but had a well earned victory against their opposite pair – they worked strongly as a team, and learnt some lessons about their positioning on the court. Our enthusiastic 3rd pair of Felix Deere and Juan Trevino, had close calls in two of their matches, losing 5-6, which was fantastic considering it was Juan’s first appearance in a match. They also gave Brambletye 1st pair a run for their money, losing 3-6. The overall result was Brambletye 6, Ashdown 3.  BS

Tennis v Brambletye
U-12 Girls’ VI          Lost 3-6

The Ashdown team played Brambletye yesterday evening on the hottest day of the past five years. Taking a turn from the norm, we played both doubles and singles matches. Our first pair of Katerina Mathison and Lily St John won all their matches – Kat as 1st player won very convincingly in her singles, 6-0, and Lily 6-2. Their doubles match was won more narrowly at 6-4, but both played with style and consistency.

Our 2nd  and 3rd players consisted mainly of substitutes due to two of our usual players being absent. Tilly Grace and Tilly Butcher played 2nd pair, whilst Annabel Hickson and Holly Allen played 3rd pair. There were some close matches but, lacking in match experience, they were outplayed by Brambletye. However, all said they enjoyed the experience immensely, and can look forward to some more tennis next year!  BS

Tennis v Cottesmore

Under 13 Boys’ VI        Lost 0-3
We faced a challenging opponent in the form of Cottesmore yesterday evening. Ollie Line and Briac Bombrun worked hard to meet the level of their opponents, but a few inconsistencies in their play matched with a very strong serve from the opposite team, meant that they lost both their matches (6-1, 6-3). Our second pair, Will Payne and Nikko Elliott, had some good play, but could have done with playing a more attacking game, losing 6-3, 6-3. Our third pair, William Womersley and Pablo Valencia, took a while to get into the match, but had a narrow loss, losing 6-4, 6-4.

A few lessons could have been learnt from our opponents about passion and motivation during the game, and it was a lesson that I hope will influence play in a positive fashion for next year’s team.  BS

Tennis v Cumnor House
Under 13 Boys’ VI      Lost 1-2
The format was changed for this match at Cumnor, with each pair playing their opposite pair only for best of 3 sets. Ollie Line and Briac Bombrun, normally 1st pair, played Cumnor’s 2nd pair; they had a disappointing start, losing the first set, but managed to come back to win the 2nd 6-3, and the final set was a tense tie-break, which they won 7-5. Although clearly more skilled than their opponents, they had some close calls. Will Payne and Nikko Elliott played 1st pair on the back of some impressive play against Brambletye’s 2nd pair. They fought well, despite some distractions mid game, but were out-matched by Cumnor’s 1st pair, one of whom was particularly adept around the court. They lost 6-2, 6-4 – the scores showing their come- back in the second set. The 3rd pair of William Womersley and Ivo Kleinwort was again a close call – they narrowly lost in a tie-break, 7-5. Despite not having much time to develop together, this pair played with much enthusiasm and drive to succeed. BS

Tennis v Brambletye
Under 13 Boys’ VI         Lost 2-7
We were well beaten at Brambletye in the senior boys’ tennis match.  Our first pair consisted of Ollie Line and William Payne, our second pair was Nikko Elliott and William Womersley and the third pair was Ollie Crawford and Henry Smith.  First pair Ollie and Will generally played some good tennis and recorded our only two victories, 6-3 over the Brambletye third pair and 6-5 against their second pair.  In the final round of matches where each pair played their opposite number, our first and second pairs both went down 6-1 and our third pair went down 6-3.  The evening’s honours certainly went to Brambletye.  MH

Tennis v Cumnor House
Under 13 Girls’ VI         Won 5-4
The match against Cumnor House was a delight to watch. All our girls played with such professionalism and tenacity. Our first pair, Katerina Mathison and Lily St John scored a smooth 6-2 victory over Cumnor 2, and an even easier one over their 3rd pair, winning 6-0. Our 2nd pair, Lily Innes and Rose-Marie Sage (a last minute replacement), also won their first game against Cumnor 3 easily, with a score of 6-2. They went on to lose to Cumnor’s strong first pair, 6-1. Both girls play developed as the match went on, with Lily Innes strong from all positions on the court and showing excellent form! Rose-Marie gained in confidence at the net, and was consistent from the base line. Our 3rd pair, Katie Sood and Laura Kendall, impressed with their mature and solid performance. They had an exciting game against a Cumnor 1st pair who were slow to get going. They could have come away with a victory, but lost out in the end 5-6. They went on to lose to Cumnor 2, 4-6. The last round was to be the deciding one! The best game of the night was Lily and Katerina’s against Cumnor’s 1st pair, who by now were playing a strong game. They managed to beat them 6-3. Katie and Laura also won against their opposite pair, 6-3. There was some confusion regarding scoring during Lily and Rose-Marie’s game, and it turned out that they narrowly lost 6-5 to Cumnor 2. This reinforced the need to call out scores regularly, and to consult coaches about any discrepancy in scores during the match. All in all, a really great performance from our girls.  BS

Tennis v Cumnor House
U13 Mixed VI       Lost 4-5
The Under 13 Mixed VI travelled to Cumnor House for what is always a keenly contested match and this occasion did not disappoint.  First pair Ollie Line and Katerina Mathison started slowly, losing to Cumnor II 3-6.  However, they bounced back well, beating Cumnor III 6-1 and then finished brilliantly to beat Cumnor’s first pair, 6-5, in an exciting match with some fine tennis and absorbing rallies.  Second pair Will Payne and Lily St John started very well, beating Cumnor III 6-0.  Next up they struggled against Cumnor I, losing 1-6, and went down again 2-6 to Cumnor II, despite playing some good tennis at times.  Third pair Nikko Elliott and Lily Innes started against Cumnor I and went down 0-6.  In their second match they found Cumnor II tough and were beaten 2-6.  However they finished strongly to beat Cumnor II 6-2.  Cumnor won overall by 5 matches to 4, but if we had started as strongly as we had finished, we could have won the fixture.  Nevertheless it was a very enjoyable evening and our players are all finding some good form.  MH

Tennis v Brambletye
U13 Mixed VI        Won 8-1
Ashdown faced a somewhat depleted team in our match against Brambletye this evening, and so took an early lead, with our 1st  and 2nd pairs of Ollie Line & Katerina Mathison (1st), and William Payne and Lily St John (2nd) winning their games with ease. Our 3rd pair struggled but came away with one game against Brambletye’s strong 1st pair, losing 1-6. Ollie and Katerina were strong from the baseline, and Katerina returned some demanding forehand groundstrokes. Ollie played with his characteristic flair, putting pressure on his opponents from front and back. Will Payne played with intelligence and impossible energy, placing the ball in hard to reach places, whilst Lily was a consistent support at his side around the court. After their initial defeat, our 3rd pair of Lily Innes and William Womersley came back fighting to win 6-0 against Brambletye’s 2nd pair, and went on to face an invigorated Brambletye 3rd pair in the last round, winning by a closer margin of 6-4. All out players were enthused by our win, albeit against a weakened team, and came out to win 8 games to 1.  BS

Tennis v Windlesham House

Under 13 Boys' VI       Lost 3-6
Ashdown faced some strong opposition from a side showing consistently good play from all three pairs. Windlesham took an early lead, with their 2nd pair beating our 1st pair 4-2, and their 1st pair smashing our 3rd 4-0. Our 2nd pair, Nikko Elliott and William Payne, fought strongly to win all their three matches however, their cool, calm temperament allowing them to beat a strong 1st pair 4-1! Our 1st pair, Briac Bombrun and Ollie Line, were slow to get going, despite some good shots, and only started to show their true exciting play near the end of the match, when they lost narrowly to Windlesham’s 1st pair, 5-6. Our 3rd pair, Oscar Lindsay and Archie Kay, fought hard but were defeated in their match against Windlesham’s 3rd pair, 6-2. As the first match of the season for our Ashdown players, it was a tough starter, but a challenge that will spur them on to improve for future matches. Well done to all those involved!   BS

Under 13 Girls' VI        Lost 1-8
The senior girls’ tennis team travelled to Windlesham House for the opening match of the season.  We were fortunate to be able to play on grass, as Windlesham have two of these courts which were in superb condition.  We also played on one hard court.  Laura Kendall and Rose-Marie Sage played as first pair.  Our second pair was Katerina Mathison and Lily St John.  Our third pair was Lily Innes and Katie Sood.  Windlesham got off to a flying start, with our two pairs who started on grass taking a while to adjust to the pace and bounce of the surface.  The Windlesham first pair were excellent players who hit the ball powerfully.  They beat our third pair 4-0, but Katie and Lily Innes competed better as the match went on.  Laura and Rose-Marie went down 4-1, while Katerina and Lily St J fought hard before going down to Windlesham’s third pair 4-3.  In the second round of matches Windlesham won all three again, but Lily St J and Katerina played some fine tennis on the grass before going down to the Windlesham first pair 4-2.  In the final round, each pair played a full set against their opposite pair.  Our girls played much better tennis in this round.  Laura and Rose-Marie did well to take two games off the Windlesham first pair, losing 6-2.  Katerina and Lily St John were both hitting the ball very cleanly and beat the Windlesham second pair 6-2 in a very pleasing performance.  Katie and Lily Innes played well before finally going down to the Windlesham third pair 6-3.  Although Windlesham won the match comfortably overall, 8-1, our girls showed promise and will benefit enormously from this early season match practice.  MH
