Summer Term 2008

May Day Morning at Ashdown
1 May

The sun rose (just about) to a celebration of the pagan and the spiritual this morning. Our traditional May Day festivities were observed as usual but May 1st is also Ascension Day this year because of the early Easter.

All the girls were out in force before breakfast, trimming their hair with blossom from the trees. Tradition has it that unmarried women who observe this ritual will be beautiful and find happiness in marriage in the future. Our girls certainly looked a picture this morning, even if there was s lightly chill wind and some of the blossom had see a lot of rain over the past two days.

Prayers this morning took place on the hill at the back of the school. We all processed to the most striking vantage point over the school and sang ‘ Hail the day that sees him rise’ to a beautiful accompaniment from Tom Glynne-Jones, Heloise Kleinwort and Robert Smith on clarinet, flute and oboe. William Taylor read from the Acts of the Apostles: chapter 1 verses 6-10 as we all gazed out over the view.

Mr Kitto spotted black rain clouds but they passed us by and we all returned to school for first lesson.
