Summer Term 2007

Under 11 England Trials Chess Competition
28 April 2007

On Saturday 28th April I went up to Liverpool to participate in the Under 11 England National Chess Trials.  It was a tournament with six rounds. All the players were very experienced and had been practising for 1 or 2 years, but I only started in December.  In the first round I was offered a draw by my opponent when he only had two minutes left but I had to accept due to a rule where you may have an extra two minutes if your opponent doesn’t accept a draw.   In the second round I lacked a bit of focus and missed a checkmate; however, I achieved a draw. In the next round I had a tough and skilful opponent and unfortunately lost.   At the end of the first day I was under pressure, with a score of 1out of 3. This meant I had to achieve a score of 2½ out of 3 the next day to have a chance of being selected for the national team.   I struggled to win the first two on the next day but got my first win in the last round. I ended up on 2/6. This meant that I had missed selection. However, I enjoyed the experience and am looking forward to another chance.
