Classics

The new C.E. Classics syllabus covers less ground than previously, but a greater degree of thoroughness is required. The children sit one of three levels in Latin, one of two in Greek. Level One is the lowest in both cases. The children study Latin for three years and Greek for two. The Latin paper has four questions: a comprehension, a translation, grammar questions on a passage, and background questions. The Greek paper consists of grammar questions and translations; transliteration too is emphasised. In both cases there is a continuity of narrative throughout the questions; this is often a mythological story with which the children are familiar.
