“The most important subject
in the school.”
“Look at anything in the
classroom and it is related to the subject.”
Geography is a dynamic
subject - you can see it in action every day and one of the things that
good Prep. Schools do is to challenge their pupils to think, to
question, to have opinions and to want to learn.
It should be a subject
that is enjoyed and Ashdown pupils are fortunate that a lot of them are
well travelled and bring their interests into the classroom.
We are lucky to have
brilliant facilities and resources; the interactive whiteboard means
that pictures and examples from around the world can be easily accessed,
courtesy of kind Mr Google and the like. Music from around the world
provides a pleasant working atmosphere and the Current Affairs board is
eagerly looked at as the pupils come in. A weekly general knowledge
quiz provides stimulation for those interested with the lure of a prize
each week for the best set of answers.
So what about work?
The ISEB (Independent
Schools Examination Board – still commonly known as Common Entrance)
provides a syllabus which is wide ranging and the 5s through to the 1s
have the opportunity to learn about the local environment and wider
global issues. Fieldwork enables them to explore, analyse and present
information and the lead up to their final challenging exams to their
senior schools is a demanding experience but one which helps to mould
them into interesting and knowledgeable individuals. The new syllabus,
starting next year is an exciting attempt to make geography a subject
that is relevant to youngsters growing up, using examples of things that
are happening today.
