Music

The main aim is to ensure that every child is given a wide range of musical experience. It must be an enjoyable activity for all and not just for the talented or dedicated few. Nevertheless we endeavour to “discover” talent at an early age and then encourage it to the best of our ability.

Each class in the school has one music lesson a week which includes learning to read and write musical notation; examining, learning about and trying out most orchestral instruments and recognising their sounds; singing; aural; listening to all types of music; simple composition of rhythms and melodies.

The value of learning an instrument goes much furthur than just acquiring the ability to play. Self discipline is needed to practise and self confidence and achievement can be found in the performance or mastery of a piece.

Each week roughly 225 lessons take place with 180 pupils learning one instrument, 26 pupils learning two instruments and 4 pupils learning three instruments.

Once pupils have reached a reasonable standard of performance it is felt that they should be encouraged to join the various ensembles.

  • Flute group

  • Clarinet group

  • String group

  • Brass group

  • Orchestra

  • Recorder group

The Woodwind and Blues groups are for more advanced players.

Music examinations

Pupils are prepared for these set by the Associated Board, Guildhall (drum kit and jazz saxophone ) and Trinity (recorder and singing).

We have a centre for the Associated Board every term with roughly 150 candidates over the year.
