Vicky Burford Lecture

The children dressed up in traditional clothing of Afghanistan.

We were delighted to welcome Vicky Burford to Ashdown. Vicky is a Housemistress at Eastbourne College and a keen athlete. Having discovered a love of travel, she stepped out of her comfort zone to trek jungles and climb mountains before embarking upon her greatest challenge; a marathon in Afghanistan. She spoke of cultural differences, the difficulties of the terrain and the development of long distance running as a pursuit for girls within a strict Islamic regime. The children had an opportunity to dress up in traditional clothing and as always, they asked a wide range of interesting questions that impressed our speaker. Vicky has since completed a marathon in Somaliland and she hopes to do the same in Congo. What an inspiration!
